In this short video I'm demonstrating how to adjust LED brightness automatically so it won't blind you in the dark and you will be able to see if it's on or off in direct sunlight. I'm not using any microcontroller, just a simple photocell.

A few years ago when I was still in school we've built a smoke detector in class using a photo cell: I don't remember the circuit in detail, but a LED pointed to the photo cell. Once there was enough smoke in it the LED light was being blocked and the resistance dropped. This triggered a buzzer. Was fun :)
@ElectronFunCom
@ElectronFunCom 7 жыл бұрын
The smoke detector is a nice and simple project. Did you have some kind of enclosure to limit the ambient light?
@0himym
@0himym 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we used empty cornflakes boxes to hide the ambient light.

Some Black and white TVs had a similar circuit to automatically adjust the contrast, this was late 50s early 1960s to compensate for ambient light conditions, a bit of a gimmick but just goes to show the forward thinking designers at the time.

How could we accompany photocell in LED lamps and street lights
@ElectronFunCom
@ElectronFunCom 7 жыл бұрын
It would be doable, but a bit more complicated. You could use several photocells and calculate the average light input, so the lights would not go crazy.

I'm guessing you don't want to use a microcontroller, right? For the moment, I can't recall a device, which would directly increase resistance with higher light levels. I'll try to figure out something, but can't promise anything.

I have an doubt. If the ultimate objective is power saving, I guess the whole circuit is still consuming the same amount of power. Simply put the power instead of being converted into photons(in Led) is now being dissipated across R(inside photocell). If I am right, can you kindly suggest any power saving solutions?
@ElectronFunCom
@ElectronFunCom 8 жыл бұрын
I didn't even mention power saving - it was not my objective. LEDs can blind you when it's dark, so my goal was to dimmer them when it's dark automatically.
