The part about washing is so true. So many clothes become misshapen, the colours bleed, or the dye fades too quickly. Proper washing technique helps but nothing can save something that is of too poor quality.

That happened to me before I found Justine's channel few years ago, I bought beautiful knitted sweater and I washed it on the most delicate setting. It literally fell appart and I tried to return it, but they didn't accept it because... Yes, I washed it! Before that I never even heard that you can't wash your clothes?? It was United colors of Benetton brand, I don't even walk to any of their stores anymore. I have no time while I'm washing my other 10 year old knitred sweaters, hahah!

Here's a few tips I have for impulse shopping in person: - If possible, bring only cash. You have a hard limit that way. - If you see something you like, try it on. Take pictures if you like! Then take it off and put it back. Sometimes just the experience of "catching and releasing" is all you need.

You used to be able to do that though - but now! - Well if it's a great item; it will be out of stock in the most popular sizes in hours (& if it's a good accessory or whatever, if you don't buy it with 12-24 hrs when it goes on the Website, it's gone) & if it's a bargain - even quicker! It's not like when you were a kid & mooned over an amazing dress in a Department Store for weeks, saving up (& then you purchased it eventually) Pandemic shopping became a thing though - & hv struggled to stop (who knew!) but I shall be mkg a New Years Resolution & sticking to it. I nearly passed out when I "kind of" counted it all up - since March 2020..🙊💜 (I kid you not..) It did Not Seem that much!🤭💜 🙏💜🇬🇧💜🌏💜

The advantage of not dressing, and therefore shopping, easily: every fitting piece of clothing cost a lot of time to find. So much less prone to impulse shopping and fast fashion 😅
@moniquetroth
@moniquetroth 9 ай бұрын
I'm in the plus-size category, so lots of fast fashion won't fit me at all. So by the time I *do* find something that fits, I've spent so long searching that I'm not about to buy items that are 1-2 wears only OR "do not wash" items. Even if I get lucky & find something cheap, it's going to need to last me a year at bare minimum, preferably longer. (I've got a few clothes that I've had for a decade or more.) Also, FYI for others with chronic illnesses like me: SOME "hand wash only" items can go in a delicates bag to be machine washed (especially if your machine doesn't have the center agitator) & then air dried. It depends on the fibers involved, but cotton, rayon, etc. are usually good.

(new silk is just not.. you know.. just no..) and let me tell you, it saved me so much! i really like taking care of the second hand silk stuff i buy, as you can only spot clean-it, and need to be really careful with it. i take so much pride in how i care for these pieces and wearing them makes me feel so good. it's really about valuing what we have instead of always looking for what new stuff to get. it was a lot of your advice that got me off of impulse shopping justine, so thank you soso much for the content you provide for us!

I used to be the biggest impulse shopper. I’m talking weekly trips to Primark. My wardrobe had some cool stuff but a lot of it felt very fragmented and hard to combine and I constantly found myself looking for more and for new. Now, my wardrobe has a fixed colour palette based on the colours that suit me, which also are easy to combine with one another, I almost only shop to fill gaps I’ve noticed in my style or to replace items that have seen their best days. I have never been happier with my personal style! Alyssa Beltempo has an amazing account to follow for anyone looking to find appreciation for their own style and closet, btw.

Same here. I personally do not put Uniqlo in the regular fast fashion category. Yes there is a turnover that is too fast in my opinion for part of their collection which I also find too trendy. But that is not the case for most of their collection because every year they release the same or similar classic staples as the main core of their collection especially their cachemire or some wool sweaters and then the part of their collection that changes is mostly filled with classic type pieces which does not go out of style easily and the quality of their clothes is better to me that some brand which are not described as fast fashion... I have plenty of their clothes which I wear often, they wash well and have lasted me years too. Plus prices are high enough that you think twice before buying but low enough that if you work you can afford it without breaking the bank. I actually wish more brands wear like Uniqlo.

I have a long, yet featherlight down coat from Uniqlo, that I consider one of the best purchases, I made in the last 5 years or so. That thing somehow weighs maybe half of a normal, knee length down coat, can be squished up and stuffed into a small bag, if necessarily and yet keeps me nice and warm in temperatures around freezing. I don't own much else from them, because I generally don't like their style very much, but at least this one item I got is excellent quality. Doesn't really show signs of wear after several winters, either.

Not healthest approach, but I tend to check how easy/free is it to return it. By the time stuff arrives, and I see it live, I tend to cool off, so I end up returning 80-90% of my buys. Bad for environment, as it adds on transport, but better for my pocket/wardrobe space. I do walk to stores to pick-up / return personally whenever its some major/easily accessible brand (Zara, H&M, Uniqlo).

To determine if a piece of clothing fits me well, I sometimes also try it on twice (on two separate occasions). I will try it on in the store fitting room, then put it back even if I think I might want it. This is because I might like the color, texture, or other part of the design, and the other factors being positive might make me biased into thinking that the piece must also fit too. But it could just be wishful thinking. After all, you'd hate to have something work in all ways but one so your brain might convince yourself that the last missing factor works as well, even when it might not actually. So on another day, I try it on again. By that time, the excitement from the other factors working would have likely worn off and may therefore not cloud my judgement as much. If it still seems like it fits well, then perhaps it actually does and then I may buy it.

Sadly I''m still having hard time to convince my sister to not impulse buying cheap stuffs from discount/sale event that usually comes with poor quality. In the end she will end up wearing it only one or twice or just store it, leave it and forget. Because those clothes often uncomfortable to wear due to poor material, unfit size and seasonal cutting. I don't have a credit card only debit cards, and I buy $20 worth of clothes once a month at best. I'm more likely to impulse buy thread or trim at my once a month thrift store then clothes and the budget is still only $20 a month.

The War on Waste says we need to wear a garment 500 times to even out the environmental impact. I wear an item of clothing for years but I don’t think I could manage 500 wears. 😬

Let’s say I’m an impulse shopper with a goal of buying my clothing for the next 5 or so years in one go, how do I cut myself off when I have enough items?

If you live in the US, Ross has excellent prices. Also, thrift shops are good for that. Try to find thrift shops that support hospitals or are in ritzy areas. You can find name brands there.

“Outdated in a month?!” You can buy a new wardrobe and it will be outdated in a month? Man, I am really behind the fast fashion train…

Don't worry. If you've not noticed the trends, you are likely not buying them anyways.
