> use the third color as a *muting mechanism* I think the phrase "muting mechanism" just unlocked something in my brain. Like I understand that using a complementary color pulls it neutral, but that idea of using it as a slider from saturated to muted just makes sense

That was super helpful. It drills into my head that I need to focus on value, limit my palette. I might make a tee shirt that says that

One tip, if you are going to use additional colors, and those colors are a mix of 1 or more of the pigments you are using in your painting, will help too. Example Imperial Purple Daniel Smith, this is pigment from Quin Rose PV 19 and either Ultramarine Blue or French Ultramarine PB29. There are many other examples, but the point is to pay attention to the pigments in your paints. Some paints have 3 or 4 pigments and are probably not good for mixes.

11:20 I hit that point with EVERY painting lol. I'm learning a big part of the process is trusting your initial vision and powering through that phase in the middle. Mostly I'm trying to fail faster these days lol gotta learn somehow!

Really beautiful Liron! I agree about printing out the reference, but I put up with the PC screen because ink is SO expensive, but truly it's the best way.

Yes! What I do is save all the major references I print in a plastic bag for future use 😊 Either for exercises, for students etc.. I’ll probably also get some of them laminated in the future!

Oh yes. I also normally pick out one blue, one red and one yellow at the start of the painting to be the stars, maybe chuck in a supplementary (normally a green or an earth colour) and use opaques at the end in a supporting role, like a sprinkling of herbs. But I've not thrown away all my colours. Because I don't use the same blue, red and yellow for every painting. If you have a warm and cool version of each, that gives you eight possible choices of three colours. Before I paint, I think carefully about which of the eight colour keys will give the mood I'm looking for. And then, bang, I'm away.

Haha thank you so much 😁🙏🏼🙏🏼 I used it for the sky (together with the other colors, in smaller amounts), and in many of the shadows.

Do you always use wet tube paints on your pallet? I struggle with getting saturation when mixing
@LironYan2 жыл бұрын
Actually most of the time the paint has dried (: But I find that with good quality paint i rewets relatively easily! What brand / brands are you using? It can also be the pigment itself. For example, Phthalo blue generally tends to rewet quite easily and be very saturated, regardless of brand

@@LironYan I think most are Windsor Newton. And... they might not be the "professional grade" tubes they have. I might need to switch it up!

What if I want mud
@LironYan2 жыл бұрын
Then mix as many colors as you can for everything 😛 And don't plan where you'll use which color - simply put them wherever. And also - constantly dab the wet brush into areas that already began drying. I hope that helps 😂🎨

Is it possible for the underpainting to be too light? Like if you use just a thin wash over the entire paper to knock out the stark white of the paper and have something that unifies all the other colors, is it possible fr said underpainting to be too faint to do its job or is it okay to keep it lighter than tea? I tend to be very delicate with the first layers and underpainting because I am still too scared of going too strong with it and I can't tell for certain if I need to be braver about that or if it's okay to keep it super light.
@LironYan2 жыл бұрын
Yes! It is possible (: But here's my take on it. Everything is contextual. So - you could do a very faint initial wash, and then have the next layer match it by ALSO being lighter than how I painted it. And then put the rest of shapes and details ALSO a little lighter. In conclusion - even if you mess it up and go to pale, you can solve it quite easily by: 1. Simply doing another underpainting on top of it - which WILL push it to be closer to, say, my version. 2. Simply decide to go higher key with the entire painting! An artist that paints quite high key in my opinion is David Howell (: I did a painting masters on him here, in case you are unfamiliar with him: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqOrpWichL5_jrs Hope my perspectivee on this helps 😊🙏🏼

Gray those colors down. THAT one tip can make a painting look professional. Great paintings with gaudy colors look very amateurish. So, what does this mean?? Add just a dab of the opposite on the color wheel. Here r examples: blue? add a speck of orange, green?? add a speck of red, violet? yellow…..& read these backwards as well such as red? add a speck of green. We do not see the world in straight color….even when its something we think is straight, ie: a stop sign or an apple, a blue sky, a green pasture or foliage on a tree. Its a little more work, but trust me, when u see a painting with only a few colors…..it works because those colors r grayed down (as its called in art instruction). Do not mix ‘bright’ with straight color when hearing these conversations. A color can b grayed & bright at the same time. What makes ur color bright is the value surrounding it. If ur color is not ‘popping’ then check the value next to it. Its either too dark or too light. Moon light or a lamp post at night will become brighter when surrounded by darker value. A spring bloom will b brighter in front of a pale sky or pale grassy area, etc. Happy painting!! 🎨

Yes, that is a question if you want to use "local colours". You are ending up in a swamp of greens and browns. By the way the tree looks a bit muddy. Water colour impressions of landscapes and nature should always try to turn the colours a little bit into more interesting harmonies and contrasts. Reality can be a bit monotonous. Quite nice and breezy little watercolour in the video.
@johncspine2787 Жыл бұрын
Well..I agree to a point. It all depends..realism, vs what watercolor can bring to a subject with its unique abilities. I’m just discovering Viktoria Pred…I forget, but, she has bits of realism and detail surrounded by very electric washes..stunning. So, it’s hard to criticize someone for teaching harmony in color by bringing up an unrelated subject.

From Ohio: You just painted my farm, good job! Add the two faint windows to my building and tone it with a yellow wash, will be perfect.
