This was really helpful, thank you! One thing that I do is take a look at the overall collection. Many designers, and artists in general, tend to develop their own signature style. It's pretty clear from pattern to pattern that the same person had a hand in designing them. When I see an online shop with a variety of styles present, it's a flag to look closer at the patterns themselves.

I just ran across your channel at a time when i was going to give up cross stitch . Yes, give up! I actually have been doing this since i was a kid. I have created lots of beautiful projects, but I decided that as i got older, it was tedious. I saw your video on looping the stitch in the back to start the stitch, and I'm back. Will pass on your website to a friend who is in the same situation. God bless and thanks.

Another thing to look for when there’s no stitched out example or a pattern to review, is the curves in the digital photo. It might look pretty, but will those curves look nice when stitched? Once I learned that trick, it saved me lots of time and frustration. These are good tips. Thank you for doing this.

Yes, absolutely! Conversion software really struggles with curves, lines, and edges. That's where you can really tell whether the person making the pattern has put in the work to make it good or if they're just dumping it onto the market and letting the buyer worry about it. Thanks for watching!

As someone who enjoys stitching large, full coverage projects, these tips are still helpful even if my preference in one of the red flags. Lol. I typically will only use a well known seller such as HAED for these to save myself the hassle of getting a not-so-great finish. Such a good video. The computer programs that convert images are very hit and miss. I started a design from my favourite band I converted via an online site & the amount of variants of colours it wanted was insane and some make no sense. It also did not convert an important symbol of the band properly. I’m loathed to abandon it as I had completed quite a bit of the pattern, but I will need to modify and put in a lot of extra work just to finish it now. I’ve learned if it looks too good to be true, its definitely is not worth it!😩
@emilyrln14 күн бұрын
For cutting down on the colors, one thing you can do is convert it to a GIF with a very limited color palette. While you might want to change some colors, it will give you something to start with and modify. That sounds like a really cool project, and I wish you luck with it! 😊

Great tips! A bit of a horror story that I can share. Two years ago, I was looking for a gumball machine pattern. I found one that I liked. Based on the photo, it looked like it was stitched and would fit in a 6" or 8" hoop. Well, I didn't know to check for dimensions and that I should have seen if any of the photos were samples of the pattern itself. There were no photos to show a sample of the pattern. I didn't know until I paid for the pattern that there would be fractional stitches! I wrote to the shop owner asking for help on the fractional stitches. Took her three weeks to get back to me and her advice wasn't helpful. I made a mess stitching it (several months later I came across your video on fractional stitches and now things make more sense!) The worst part, though, was that the finish product was 1.25" across by 2.5" tall. It was freaking tiny compared to the photo!!! I felt bad giving the shop owner a 2 star review and I did say in my review it was my fault for not noticing there was no dimensions listed. I wish the pattern was 4 times larger than how it turned out.

Oh no! Thanks for sharing this with us! I bet it made a cute stitch though!

I've noticed good cross stitch pattern makers will post videos of their work at an angle where you can clearly see the stitches. Also look at the edges of the 'mock up" picture. On a lot of them you can see where the picture ends. I will say that after stitching a bunch of small pixel art from video games, I just started my first SAL. A made for cross stitching pattern really makes a big different. Its such a pure joy to stitch and you can see the effort the artist put into it.

Thanks, good info. So far I haven’t gotten hosed on pdf patterns, fortunately. One other thing I look at that you didn’t mention, is price. Not a 100% indicator, but a few times I’ve seen patterns I liked and considered. But the price seemed unrealistically low for a pattern - such as $1.50 ish for a pattern I’d expect to pay $8-10 for. I’ve figured the pattern was stolen and stayed away. There are so many great patterns, to me it’s not a problem to find another pattern. Several times I’ve later seen the very same or very similar pattern by a recognized designer! I need to learn how to do the Google image search you mentioned. Anyway, keep up the great videos. Happy New Yesr!

I think one of the best tells if a pattern sucks or not is when it's unreasonably inexpensive, especially for those gigantic full coverage. Making a good pattern like that takes a really long time, if someone is selling a huge pattern for like 5$, it's fake.

Purchase cross stitch mags like Cross Stitcher, World of Cross Stitching and Just Cross Stitch, or purchase kits from established companies like Mill Hill, Anchor, etc, or purchase cross stitch pattern books that were published in the 80's, 90's and 2000's... The problem I have is that they were saying it's like new. Well, knowing Dimensions like I do, I took a closer look. Boy oh boy, this video would've been helpful a few months ago. :P I bought a pattern from an etsy seller. It wasn't a full coverage pattern yet everything was charted, including the plain white background of 50K stitches. I knew this person could not be a stitcher themselves because who would do that to another stitcher? I guess they just slapped into a charting software without editing and called it good. So I naturally left a 1 star review. The shop owner was more concerned about me changing the rating versus fixing the actual pattern. I refused. It wasn't an expensive pattern but I was still annoyed. Now I don't buy unless they have a social media presence and that now includes a Facebook group where I can see progress from actual stitchers working on those designs. Speaking of designing, maybe a video on how to get started in designing cross stitch?

Generators can be a great way to get started on a pattern, but taking the extra time to consolidate excess similar colors, clean up edges, anti-aliasing, and other artifacts, makes the difference between a good pattern and a nightmare! It's this extra work that many bad actors don't want to do.

Using a pixel image editing software such as Photoshop or GIMP ( free and open source though with a learning curve) to "posterize", that is reduce the number of colours, an image prior to pixelating it for cross-stitch might help. You should be able to choose the total number of colours and the colour boundaries.

I kept waiting for you to give disclaimers that there are plenty of large full coverage pattern sellers out there like Heaven and Earth Designs, Tilton, Artecy, etc that won't have stitched examples, will have tons of colors, and are huge, but that are trusted, license their artwork (a lot of which is AI generated these days), have social media presence, and people love and do complete and end up looking great, but you act like large, very detailed, huge, full coverage patterns just aren't a thing and that no one should do them. I get that this channel is more focused on beginners and you're trying to steer people toward your products, but that doesn't mean that you should act like only small, simple patterns ever turn out well and there are no exceptions whatsoever, you're intentionally misleading people. I normally really like your content but this was very disappointing.
@SonovaStitch14 күн бұрын
As I said, these are all reasons to look closer, not a disqualification. Then I offered a few other things to look more closely at (fan base and social media presence being one of them). One of those pattern makers you mention is actually one I caution people against buying from anyway, as they don't do any testing and have recently started using a lot of AI generated images (which is basically just plagiarism with extra steps in my personal ethics). They published a bunch of patterns with very bad color choices caused by bad color values assigned to the 35 new colors and since they didn't even bother to double check, lots of people invested hundreds of hours in projects that didn't come out even close to the render. They published huge patterns with terrible colors for over two full years.

Ford, this is rich. Calling out Etsy shops while you’re selling straight-up copyright violations. Like, do you think no one’s gonna notice? Clean up your act before throwing shade at others.
@SonayTuna-p2fКүн бұрын
This whole video is about avoiding 'bad patterns,' but your Sonovastitch shop sells untested AI-generated designs too. You even said that shops with hundreds of patterns in a year are a red flag, yet you’ve got hundreds of designs that look like they were cranked out overnight. Care to explain?
@MertieJuddКүн бұрын
So let me get this straight... you’re out here acting like the cross-stitch police, but aren’t you the one taking copyrighted images from Google and turning them into patterns for your Sonovastitch shop? And now you’re criticizing other shops? Seriously, we’re all waiting for an explanation for this double standard.
@BenhurFilizКүн бұрын
Sonova, this is kind of ridiculous. You’re telling people to avoid shops with copyright violations, but your Sonovastitch store has stuff like Barbie patterns that got taken down for copyright strikes. Don’t you think it’s a bit hypocritical to lecture others when you’re doing the same thing?
@SerpilYasemin-r9pКүн бұрын
Ford, you seriously said in the video that shops using Disney patterns are 'fly-by-night operations,' but your Sonovastitch store is full of them. Did you forget about the Mandolorian and Pikachu designs you're selling? Kinda hard to take this advice seriously when you’re breaking the same rules.
@DAMONIrelandКүн бұрын
Not you, Ford, trying to school people on spotting bad shops while Sonovastitch is out here selling patterns based on copyrighted designs. Like, how can you talk about 'trusted sellers' when your own store breaks the rules? People aren’t dumb, we notice this stuff.
@MARKBarth-k5kКүн бұрын
Ford, in the video, you warned people about shops with 'no stitched examples' or patterns using copyrighted images, but Sonovastitch ticks those boxes too. How can you criticize others when your shop sells Disney characters and AI-generated stuff that hasn’t been stitched? Feels pretty hypocritical.
@DawneBryantКүн бұрын
Hey Ford, just curious... why didn’t you use your own Sonovastitch shop as an example of the 'shops to avoid'? Would’ve been way easier for you and a lot more honest. Instead, you’re dragging others while ignoring your own double standards. Hypocrisy much?

LMAO, the audacity. You’re out here exposing other shops while you’re breaking the same rules. Saw your shop, Ford or should I say Sonovastitch?. Disney, Barbie, Pokémon, seriously? Pot meet kettle. This is embarrassing.

Instead of hiding my comments from others, maybe you could try to reply. Unless, of course, you're unable to defend yourself..… deleted comment: "Hey Sonova, aren't you being incredibly hypocritical when talking about copyright infringement like this? Even right now, your shop has plenty of patterns infringing on copyright, from Star Wars to Pokémon..I'm not even mentioning the Barbie designs that were removed from Etsy because of copyright strikes. I'm really curious who gave you the authority to talk about shops like this while you are one of them.. I'm sure this comment won't stay up for very long either
