Thanks for all your advice Philip. I've been self taught all the way, and it's people like you that have made my career possible.

Hey Philip! These are great points! If I was to add an 11th mistake, it would be underestimating the cost of branding. Many companies, especially those of a more older fashioned mindset, don't always see the same value in branding as those who know the value of it. For this reason, they tend to under estimate or give less credence to it's effect, thus not investing as much in it as they think they should.

Amen Sam! I should have thought of that one. Biggest mistake of them all.

Those advice are gold! They are essential and clear just as the experienced one can give, and could help a lot in the meaningful mountain of doubts that should autentically come when approaching these problems (i.e. now that i have my product, lets sell it). Sorry for my english ;)

I always wondered how you got the name "Verhaal" for your business. I am Dutch, it is Dutch for "story". You have a Dutch last name, so I am curious to the connection. :)

Hi Philip, do you have any advice for someone that wants to enter the creative industry? I'm coming from finance and i'm not sure how to start? If you have a video on steps that people like me can take, or just advice in general, I would be extremely grateful! Thanks!

Is it a mistake for creating two different brands for one freelancer? Say he wants to freelance for design and another instructional design?
@PhilipVanDusen5 жыл бұрын
Chris, I'd say yes - it's a mistake. The main reason is resources. If both brands are one individual contributor then everything you do (posting, promotion, content, etc) and everything you maintain (social sites, websites, etc) are all x2. That is usually too much for one person to manage effectively. If the specializations were really far apart (a lawyer who is also a photographer) then yes, separate them.

I have a question: If I put a video, like 2 pictures on my upcoming site is that good or bad thing..?? Cuz you said don't put sooo much stuff about yourself on your site.

Dashia, at this stage of the game, don't worry too much about it. The answer will be apparent then the time comes to change anything.

In India I found a problem that most of uneducated and unprofessional coming in the industry and though they don't have knowledge of design brand and all. but they are affecting much more to the professionals..and unfortunately people's going to them to save some money in terms of design and printing cost and it affects us lot..even I was trying to find solution but not succeed yet if you have any suggestion please share with me ..sir.
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
Artarea, Ignore the clients who are looking just to save money - you don't want them anyway. Focus on a larger client - a bigger business, ones who will appreciate what you do. Also level-up your services - start offering strategy and social media content management - not just design - you have to have a full-er service offering. The "designers" who are less capable cant compete there.
