Thankfully I followed your electric saving ideas. My bill is not lower because the rates have doubled since April. Xcel is raising the rates 3-7 pm from 5 cents to 28 cents per key 😥..I'm going to unplug everything except my furnace (even unpluggingfrig) from 12:50p to 7:10p during those peak hours. I will now use a solar powered cell phone charger, a screen magnifier $13 from Walmart to put in front of the cellphone for watching You Tube etc on my cellphone . I have unplugged even my microwave when it's not in use.unplugged the electric start on my gas stove-use a match to light the burner .doesnt work during the time you need to operate the oven..I cut what I can but cannot control the service costs of fuel delivery/state,county, city fees..or assessment in Mn for the Texas Artic blast grrr

You asked for side hustles - I have a most unusual side hustle! I am a quite accomished knitter - I'm working on a Master Knitter Certification from the Nation Knitting Guild of America (yes that's a real thing!) So I do test knitting patterns and also knit samples to be photographed for the paaterns/books as well as samples for showing in local yarn stores. The yarns and patterns are provided to me, and I get paid by the meter of yarn used. The finished object goes to the publisher/pattern writer, but I get the pattern for free plus get paid. And sometimes, I get boxes of dying mistakes from yarn manufacturers! It all adds up to a BUNCH of free or nearly free Christmas and birthday gifts!

Hi Larry and Hope, my side hustle is 3 fold in payback ... I have had surgery on my leg and one of the conditions to recover is I have to walk ... I am not a keen walker !! So I took up delivering catalogues in my suburb AND they pay me for walking, that was the first payback. Secondly I did not have to join a gym as the exercise doing the deliveries is enough to meet my recovery requirements. Lastly, I get to see all the different gardens around my area and have been given heaps of cuttings of plants I like, so our garden renovation we are doing is being planted out by the cuttings which I know grow well in our local area.... talk about Win Win 🏆

We definitely made the mistake on retirement. I started at my job in my 20s and they have a regular retirement and an extra deferred comp program that I did not opt into….I finally opted in to it in my 30’s and now in my 40’s I’m still kicking myself for those 10yrs I didn’t at-least put like $10 a pay in…that was a lot of missed opportunity!!! Credit Cards got me too when I first started out…I’m totally zero credit card debt now but I wish someone would have warned me about the horrible hamster wheel that sticks you in when I was younger!

Hope, your outfit today is in Your Colors! When my husband and I were first married, as in the first month. We got a huge phone bill.I had to plan our wedding by phone, because I was at college and 650 miles from my parents. I tearfully went to my husband and told him how much it was and he told me to just send in about half of it. I tearfully explained it wasn't a credit card and we had to pay the whole amount each month! From that day forward, I became the primary money manager in our family.

@patmartin9727

I totally understand that. I have always been the one to deal with all the household finances yet when I lost my husband nearly 3 years ago I felt in close with the finances. It took me about 12 months to sort out all the joint finances and then build a budget for my finances on my own. This all happened during Covid which didn’t help as everything relating to my husbands finances took longer to sort out. I then decided to down size to a smaller more manageable property which once again sent my budget and finances into change. I am now 12 months down the line and am just about feeling I have cracked the new budget and am back on track with the budget, sinking funds emergency fund and savings. I have found the whole journey a little stressful but now feel I am in a good place with my finances. Just keeping a very close eye on things as am a little worried about the cost of living rises we are all experiencing. Let’s hope over the next year things settle down and the world gets back on an even keel. Can I just add be kind to your self and give yourself time to work through the things you need to sort out, tweak as you go along.

But he supports all my work with our finances, budgets etc and is very proud of it. Some days ago we learned that our pension rises for more than 200€. What a Roman feast! 😂 The next day I actualized our sinking funds, opened a new one, gave each of us a little amount to spend on books just to celebrate this day. Now we can face all the difficulties the next years will bring us.

Thanks for your videos! We live off grid with solar panels and a gas generator backup. I have learned to work with the sun to run the generator as little as possible. We turn off things with phantom loads at night, do laundry druring the day when the sun shines brightly and, of course, line dry laundry. I wash dishes the same way, and we do as much as possible to use solar power instead of the generator. Our son is kind enough to take our limited garbage with him when he visits, but we do usually go to the local land fill once or twice a year for yard ckean up and such. We have lived pretty frugally all our lives, but as they say, there's always room for improvement.

Coincidentially, prior to watching your channel I was thinking how wasteful (and costly) it was to wait for the water in my bathroom faucet to get warm to wash my face at night and in the morning. It comes out very cold and takes quite a while for the water to run warm. It occured to me to get a vintage pitcher and wash basin. That way the water would be room temperature and you could more accurately measure your usage at the sink. I'm going to give it a try.

Wow! $60 off utilities in 3 months! Yes, I'd like to see that breakdown. I love listening to your budgeting history! I think most of us have made big boo-boos! At least you worked together to figure it out! That was good. When I was young,I graduated a year early from high school. I didn't plan on it or try to...I thought study hall was boring, because I'd probably already done my homework for the next day before I went home from school. I also took classes in the summers. I loved learning and would rather be in a classroom or library back in those days. And, don't worry...I had a perfectly fine social life, too! The point is that I'd already fulfilled all the requirements for graduation at the end of my junior year. I didn't know that was going to happen, so I hadn't done anything about picking and applying to colleges. So, I spent the year working, while living at home...so I saved just about my whole pay check. Then, I moved out to live on my own for another year. I thought I could do it and wanted to test that. (I did come back home and go to college). When I was 10, we got a new big dictionary. It had a whole lot more than just a dictionary in it. It had a list if all the rocks in the world (whereupon, my favorite became lapis lazuli), business letter forms, proper greeting for anyone of any title all over the world, alphabetized baby names, etc...and a list if percentages if income to allow in each budget category. So, when I moved out, I already knew that list. Somehow, I also realised I needed to keep the categories separated by envelopes. I don't know if I'd heard that, or if I thought it up...I probably heard it somewhere (although I was making amortization charts on debt before I'd ever heard of amortization. It just made sense to me that interest was going to keep being added to debt levels while debt was being paid off. I'm saying that as evidence that I might have thought up using envelopes on my own...I just don't remember. I also did NOT start saving for retirement early enough. I did start 2 very small accounts with 2 different employers in my 30's, but nothing substantial till I was 45. If I could do it over, I'd start with my 1st job. I still use an envelope system...plain paper envelopes...the kind that are always on hand. It didn't occur to me until last year that some people buy fancy, zipping, plastic envelopes and put them in special notebooks. I like that...and would love to have that...but I'm saving money...not spending it. My utilities have been lower than usual for a few months now. I'm just using less. I've been extreme in the past to lower them, but recently, I've just been keeping an eye on them. My water, sewage and gas bills have been low. I pay the same amount every month for electricity through one of their programs. Anyway, it really is interesting to how you wended your way through all you learned...😊❤

Your financial journey has been almost identical as ours. Same mistakes and same wins. Our biggest struggle now is living in a very high cost state (NJ) but we can’t leave because our oldest daughter has stage 4 breast cancer and we are her support system. Also, the cost of healthcare has become very difficult to navigate even though we eat healthy. Not sure what our financial future looks like.

I stopped picking up collectibles because I have too many and I am tired of dusting them, I never go out and eat because I would rather eat at home. I have tried to sell some items but have not had any luck, I am trying to find a side hustle I can I enjoy and can make a little money. I am retired had to retire at 62 1/2 because of my health. Have a blessed day.

If you live within your means you are a millionaire! Everything on top of that is gravy. Living within your means will free you up to not worry about working harder to pay for things you don't need or makes you happy. Time has a value. Either relax doing nothing or work doing something you want for extra cash. All possible if you live within your means.

I would love some more detail on how you saved on your utility bill. It won't be quite the same as what we have in the UK but I would still bet there will be some value in your video on that subject, if you make it! Thank you so much for another great video. I think you two are younger than me, but I wish I'd had you to watch on KZbin when I was growing up. You've taught me so much that nobody else has done! PS. Can I ask you, how did you manage things like birthday gifts to each other? If you're always 100% open with each other about budgets, how do you squirrel away money to treat your beloved? Did you allow each other a certain amount of "pocket money" that you didn't have to declare what you'd spent it on? I'm curious because this arose with me when I had a partner who wanted me to manage the money. I was happy to do it, and I kept offering to show the budget and how it worked, but my partner wasn't interested as long as there was enough to cover essential bills. I was able to squirrel away money to treat my partner with, but it didn't happen the other way around because I was the only one who knew what was happening with the money! I wouldn't allow that situation to arise again, but I wonder how you have dealt with it?

My spouse and I talk a couple months before our birthday's and Anniversary, if we want something big or special we say so. Otherwise each has a little each month that if not spent can roll over.

Hope you are lookin especially pretty today. Were you two teachers in your professions? Not long after we were married me 17 him 23 it became my JOB to make His income go twice as far. Growing up Southern rural was very incentivizing! Pretty quickly I/we developed a 1 yr, 5 yr, and 10 year plan... what we wanted to have accomplished in those time periods. As time rolled by it became 1 yr, 2 yr and 5 yr plan! LOL Now as a recent widow I am forced to adjust to 50% income when expenses did not go down to 50%. Praise the Lord we have pretty much lived debt free all our lives!! My dad always said "Pay as you go or don't go!"

First, we're so sorry for your loss. Cutting your income that much is very hard. When we were younger, I worked in radio and Larry worked behind the scenes in television and multi-media. Later, he worked at our local police department for 20 years before retiring.
