I did learn something here.... is when you turn your wheel all the way to the left and started to back up... I learned by looking at your video when you turn the wheel to the right was pretty much when the right front peek corner of the RV was pointing at the center of your window and I thought that would be an excellent marker to use the pointy corner of the RV and we're at mines up on the window and then get used to it like shooting pool over and over again, I would also recommend only practicing with a 12-foot wide, because that covers all places

Thank-you for this video. I’ve had my 33 ft 5th wheel 3 years. We take it out at least once a month. This past 2 months I’ve lost all confidence I had built up, backing into sites. Even the easy ones. Last month after 5 failures in a really tight campsite and getting frustrated, I drove around the park 5 times to let cars pass. I was finally rescued by a truck driver. He put it in in one try, perfectly between 4 trees. He gave me some tips that day that I have found are very much in line with your video. The wife and I have taken the trailer out twice this week and my confidence is returning. One more practice in a few days should do it! My hats off to you and your step by step instructions. It works!
@SunsetSeekers3 жыл бұрын
Outstanding! I'm so glad to hear that your confidence is returning and that you found this video to be helpful!! My father-in-law is a truck driver and I've gotten some help from him over the years as well!! I can certainly relate to the frustrating day that you described--That is the whole reason that I made this video a few years ago--I had a very similar day to yours at a state park where the camping loop was one-way and as soon as I started trying to back in to one of the most difficult sites I've ever attempted before, there were 3 or 4 RVs that pulled in to the one way loop behind me and were waiting on me to back in (as if I didn't have enough problems!! LOL!) I've learned a lot since making this video but since I am not a full-timer and only camp once a month on average, I often times still feel like I'm out of practice when I get to the campsite.
@lloydthomas28963 жыл бұрын
What tips?
@richardmccrary8193 жыл бұрын
@@lloydthomas2896 basically same as the video. …Learn the turning ability of your truck (my steering wheel turns 1 3/4 turns), practice different scenarios, have spotter use agreed upon hand signals. Have spotter watch the tail swing. Make small adjustments so you don’t over steer. Figure out how sharp you can turn your rig. (I can do 90deg with my Pullright sliding hitch) Get out and look, several times if you have to!
@richardmccrary8193 жыл бұрын
BTW, a funny thing happened when I was practicing the last time. Some guy showed up and was distracting me with pointers on how to back in. He stayed at my drivers window making suggestions. (just like when camping!) When he saw me nail it in one shot with 12 ft wide cones and an 85deg back in, he got real quiet, then asked how I learned that. I turned him on to your video!!!

Great video. Some things I have learned from over the road driving Pull to the side you are turning into ( tight as you call it) then turn so you are angled away at the last few feet ( this will do 2things 1) start the trailer headed toward the spot. ) keep the trucks front end from hitting something,or going into a ditch. When backing up always remember ( where the nose (front bumper) goes the tail ( rear of the trailer) goes. where your tires(axles) are positioned on the trailer will determine how fast/sharp. Or slow/long your trailer will turn, and not how long it is. And watch out for overhang/outswing with axles that are mounted forward. On 90% of big truck side view mirrors you will see GOAL Get Out And Look Like you said,if you have to get out and look 100 times to put it in your head ,it's better than one accident to write up and RUIN everyone's trip. If everyone would learn the basics in a deserted parking lot there would be less accidents and more fun for everyone. Thanks for doing the video,if only one person learned enough so they don't tear something up ,than it was worth all the effort you put into it.

Lining up the distance forward with the cone and the rear edge of the 5er on the tighter turn into the 12 space seems to have helped a lot. - Thanks for that pointer. The issue I usually have is that the road in front of the site is not wide enough to make the turn or to pull forward, especially if there are campers with trucks parked directly across from the spot I'm trying to back into!

I watched this video 8 months ago and practiced a number of times. I had bought a lot in a RV golf resort that requires 90 degree backin on a narrow street. I have a long bed 4 passenger Dodge dually and 30’ 5th wheel. Dynamics a little different because of longer truck and shorter RV. I did a good job of getting it in, had to dodge a tree, and neighbor spotted me but I would have been fine anyway. I use cones for guidance even if I can use a curb or driveway for site line. I guess it’s a comfort factor. I live in a cul-de-sac, I have to complete a circle before I can line up and back up and I continue to you use cones even after 2 years. BTY I LOVE my DODGE dually!

I’m going to be starting out this year with my 20’ bumper pull, but I’m starting my research now so I can upgrade to a fifth wheel in a year or two (depending on finances of course). I learned years ago that when backing a trailer “right is left & left is right” and that has served me well over the years. However I have never pulled, or backed, a fifth wheel. So I appreciate very much that you are sharing your knowledge with us. I’m starting my education with hitches at this point. Recently upgraded from a 36 pull behind to a 40 fifth wheel. It certainly is a different adventure from the 10,200 to the 17K in the weight but the backing of the two different style coaches seams to be a bit different as well, which brings me to you tube this morning and needing to get it into my RV driveway with only a couple feet width to spare. Started my adventure last night after dark. Then decided to head over to the local parking lot and "give it a try". The reaction from one to the other is pretty extreme, it seems so far. Now th sun is out and I need to make this happen. Your video has given me some great information. I appreciate you. I'm no beginner in backing up a trailer, just a fifth wheel. I think I'm dealing with the space difference behind the wheels as my obsticle at this time and practice always makes the perfection.

Mike you are starting the right way practice in a save area the more you do it the easier it's going to get. The setup is the most important thing use all the room you have you should 15 to 20 farther forward and divide the road in half at least more if you can your to close to the cones you don't want to finish the backup with near a 90 degree jackknife. I have never backed a 5th wheel but I have backed up a tractor trailer blindside hundreds of times I don't know exactly what you can see thru the side and back windows you want to see the trailer wheels thru the windows that's the angle you want to back in with can't see the wheels you need a spotter.

@michaelforget18233 жыл бұрын
There is an other way do the same set up as the back of trailer gets to the center of spot turn you truck to the center of the road.then turn back to the side where your trailer is going in.that will set the back of trailer at the Wight Angle to put in the spot.the only thing if the road is to narrow it will not work. So basically your truck is going to make An S.the longer the trailer the slower it will trun.the shorter the faster the trailer will turn.be safe in your travels.

Been a travel trailer owner for a long, long time. Had no problems backing it, even though it was 35 feet long. Three weeks ago purchased my first fifth-wheel at 41 feet long. I practiced in a parking lot initially backing first. I felt like a total child at the wheel. Not frustrated, just trying to figure it out and I was all over the charts, but finally got in between my two markers. Since then, been camping 3 week-ends, each campsite has been different, but I made it in. Also, have to back into my drive way at home, I did it. Still though, I was looking for the key to make it more consistent. I've been doing it wrong for sure, but the last campsite, where I'm at right now, I tried hugging the driver's side (drivers side back in), and pulled the rear of the trailer slightly forward of the turning spot, or desired pivot spot. Trailer tires still went in the grass, but it was the closest and best back-up yet. Your video confirmed my hunch how it should work. I think I might have been too far forward and didn't turn the wheel sharp enough. At 41 feet, I've got a lot of tail swing, which is kind of deceiving. Your video and instruction , I think, gave me the assurance I was on the right hunch. Like you said in the video, every rig is different. I need to find that sweet spot distance now. Fortunate, I have access to a large parking area, and will do some more practicing before returning home this week-end. Thanks for the video. By far, one of the best I've seen yet on the simple, "how to" do this.

I am absolutely thrilled to hear that you found this video to be useful!! This is my first RV and I had a lot to learn! There were two camping trips in particular that were very stressful on the first day backing in to the spot. My wife and I were both on edge and squabbling with each other, and although I did manage to get my rig into the spot on both occasions, it almost didn't seem worth it at that point! LOL! The last of these incidents convinced me that it was time to get some much-needed practice. The church parking lot was a wonderful place to finally get the feel for my rig, with no wife to stress me out and no impatient campers waiting on me to move. I am very glad that I took the time to do this! Thank you so much for your comments and for watching my video!

This is a great informative video. You didn't try to give out too much information. I was most curios about how you determined when to start your turn. I would also like to see a video on making turns at intersections, mostly right turns as they are usually tighter if turning onto a single lane road.
@SunsetSeekers5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching!! I positioned my rig about 3 feet forward of the spot and turned my wheel all the way to the left to begin my turn into the spot. That part is pretty straight forward but when to roll out of the turn depends on a number of different factors like: the turning radius of your rig, the size and length of the spot, and any obstacles that may be in the way. As far as turning at intersections, I'm afraid I can't really give you any more wisdom other than to make as wide a turn as you can. I'm still a newbie at this and I'm learning as I go along! I plan on putting together more future videos on the subject as my knowledge and experience grows.

Awesome vid! Great details. Have had a bumper pull the last three years and am pretty good at backing her up. Picking up the 5th wheel in a couple of weeks and my understanding is that they are easier to back..once you figure them out. First trip out is 2 weeks after we pick it up so your info is spot on for my timing. Thanks for putting it out there!

When I went from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel, I discovered that the actual towing on the road was much smoother, but there was a learning curve to getting around at the campground. This video really does help grasp the concept. One thing I noticed with the 5th wheel is you have to be a LOT more concerned with the height of it and overhead obstacles like tree branches, etc. Don't ask me how I know this...lol

New Sub.here. We have a 38' Montana with a SD 350 crew cab long bed one very long rig😂 I look forward to backing in (once I got more confident in my ability).We find that the back in spots are usually nicer in most parks! Now that I have been schooled by you I can't wait to get back out and get after it!👍🏻You my friend are a very good teacher! I think a lot has to do with the distance from axle to rear of rig. We did have an issue at a state park where the road was too narrow with trees on the driver's side and couldn't make the turn in. Had to find another spot that flooded after it rained the next day. We still had a great time!!! Keep the instruction videos coming!✌🏻️🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻

Will say 5th wheel towing has been a pleasure over towing a 32’ travel trailer - the stability and reduced sway really help ease up anxiety towing. However - had a TT for 6 years, moved to the 5th wheel last year, and there’s a learning curve involved with that. I’ve found myself over correcting as I back in, adjusting from the bumper to in-bed connection points. Great video!

9 years ago, I borrowed my son-in-law's 5th wheel RV and chevy 3/4 ton short bed truck with 20 gallon tank. We were trying to decide if we want a Class A motorhome or a 5th wheel to live in full time. One trip, 250 miles and one campground parking trip and the decision was made. Class A was the winner. It took me 45 minutes to park this thing and 3 go arounds to start over. I had people coming out with their lawn chairs and taking pictures. It was a mess. I had one guy come out to give me a hand and guide me back in. He was worse at it than me. I finally had to tell him to go away. His only concern was that I not hit his RV. When I finally did get it in the parking spot, it was the wrong slot. I just went to the front desk, told them I'm taking the spot that I parked in and if they had a problem that they could come and move it. I stayed 2 days and left. A couple months later, we flew to Florida and bought our class A. 5ers are just not for me. If I had to park another one, I'd start drinking again.
@SunsetSeekers6 жыл бұрын
ROFL!! I can relate to your frustration! I had my reasons for picking a 5th wheel, but learning how to back it in to a spot is definitely the major drawback to owning one. On one of my last trips to Lake Claiborne State Park, it took me about 20 minutes to get it into the spot, meanwhile I have about 3 other RV's behind me on a one way loop impatiently waiting for me to back in to the spot! I have never felt so incompetent in my entire life! LOL! After that, I decided that I would get some much needed practice before I went out again! We are thrilled to have a new subscriber! Lmao!!! Hahahahahaha! It is very frustrating when trying to back a truck n trailer...your common sense has to work in reverse in a sense. Its very true...the length of the rv makes all the difference! You've already got your class A...but heres my lil tip...the longer the distance between rv tires and rear truck tires...the longer it takes the trailer to respond. 😊

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. I haven't even learned to back up yet, and I noticed last night when checking out a park I have reservations at that it will require blind side backing up at a 90-degree angle and 14 feet wide. Yikes! Thank goodness my RV is only 25' long. One thing I might note: You kept referring to "rig," and at least in the Pacific Northwest we refer to the truck as the rig. It took me a while to figure out that when _you_ say "rig" you mean the RV. 🙃
