How to Back Test With Market Replay in Sierra Chart

The first part of this video shares how back testing can help to gather trade statistics and improve strategies one step at a time. The second part shows a step by step tutorial on how to perform accurate back testing with automated trading systems in Sierra Chart. This is not a full proof back testing method, there are some issues with it which are described in the video. This video can also be helpful if you are learning this software and want to improve your knowledge.

The process should be pretty much the same between the Chart DOM and the Trading DOM. Just make sure you adjust the days to load in both cases to ensure the DOM has access to the days you want to replay. If you run into a specific issue you could follow up here.

Awesome video. I have two questions, how to setup multiple simulation accounts so to have different stats for different strategies? and is there a way I can run the backtesting over multiple days at once like a week worth of testing? or I have to do the backtest for each day separately?

The best way would be to run multiple instances of Sierra Chart, each one set to a different trade account or trade service. If you use a market replay yes you can run it on multiple days without stopping. You could remove the after hours trading session from the chart or simply tell the system not to trade in after hours, if you only want it to trade in real-time hours.

This is a great video! Thanks! Out of curiosity - how did you line up the two charts side by like that? Detach chart window and organize with the control bar maximized, or is there an easier way to setup this configuration?

Glad it helps. You can either position them manually or use the Tile as Grid features in SC. Go to Window > Tile Vertically or Horizontally. If you use Tile as Grid then make sure to set the number of rows and columns in Global Settings > General Settings > Window Tiling.

Thanks for the kind words. All is going well, but there is work that needs to be done. Most if not all testing is done in the simulated environment as shown in this video and every now and then we'll trade live in the afternoon.

@@elchulitoJP I sort of described some aspects of it in the above video. It performs exactly as expected, the only tricky element is incorporating the selectiveness of a discretionary trader or whichever tools you use to help eliminate lower quality trades. This is the next step.
