Hands down the best explanation of the half hitch I’ve seen on KZbin. Thank you.

I used a tiny rubber band to hold the shrimp on the hook, but it is a headache after doing it so many times throughout the day. I will definitely try your way. Thank you!

Miracle Thread works as well. If this does not meet your expectations, try that.

Great tip, thanks! In Southern California we fish with a lot of Ghost Shrimp which is great for multiple species here but tends to be pretty fragile (and expensive or labor intensive to collect) so each bait is valuable. I tie a short length 6-10 inches) of sewing thread to the eye of my hook. After threading the shrimp on the hook I then wrap the thread around the shrimp and hook several times tangling it in the shrimps legs, tail, swimmerets, etc.

I just tried this last night with Anchovies bank fishing for catfish and it works! It stayed on the hook. Only other technique I have seen to keep bait on hook is pulling the snell knot down and using the excess line to clamp it down like and egg loop knot

My 6 year old fed the fish all last weekend on raw shrimp. We added the half hitch and he pulled one in on first cast. To answer something you addressed in comments, yes, you have to retie after a few runs. But we are catching 2.5 lb catfish tops so line strength and knot fatigue isn't a big concern.

If using fluoro, this technique might kink the line, causing it to weaken and break. Also, does it affect hook-sets?
@KayakhacksFishing7 жыл бұрын
I have not seen any negative impact. The trick came from Australia where they fish for larger fish. If I see a problem, I'll let folks know.

i rig it like a DOA shrimp with the hook coming out its back. if its hooked the way the shrimp holds its formed shape its slides out. if its hooked against its body form the same shrimp locks its self on the hook shaft and prevents itself from coming off easy. it works best with fresh shrimp that is not mushy.
@KayakhacksFishing7 жыл бұрын
Great tip - thanks! Use the shell to hold it. I find you can only freeze shrimp once. If you try to refreeze, it is nothing but mush.
@Ponky24847 жыл бұрын
@Kayak Hacks Fishing i can thaw and refreeze my shrimp many times the way i preserve them. 7 times is the most times i have done it just for experiment purposes. what i do is get wood dust (not from treated wood). your local hardware shop should have some in the collecting bins. they will most of the time give it to you free. then you mix equal parts borax and kosher/pickling salt (has to be non-iodized). mix some kosher/pickling salt in water and ice and make a saline solution and rinse shrimp in there. next take out shrimp and throw them in wood dust and mix them around in there good. should look like shrimp in dry cornmeal batter. then get a container and pour your wood battered shrimp in it 1/3 of the way along with a splash of borax/salt mix and mix well. then pour 2/3 of the way and repeat process till full. shrimp wont and should not freeze rock solid. they require minimal time to thaw out and should not be mushy. borax/salt mix preserves them and wood dust prevents them from getting stuck together and help keep them with oxygen in their bodies which keeps their fresh like rigid texture. works well. i still have shrimp preserved like that from Feb. 👍

Now, that is a process!

I loved Fort Ord and was stationed there from 75-79. The only bad thing about it was that it was on the wrong side of the bay. The fog would roll in around 2 PM and cool off everything far too much.

@KayakhacksFishing7 жыл бұрын
Wow. never happened to me.... yet....
@timothym22416 ай бұрын
It will only form a knot if it comes off the opposite end of where you put it on the bait. As long as it comes off the way it went on, no knot.
