Looks delicious Mary! Glad you said not to kneed. My late mother who was a Dub would say the same thing. She did many variations as well. When I make Soda bread I make a small loaf. Along with the Soda and buttermilk I use 1 cup each of all purpose and whole wheat. For a nod to my Tipp ancestors who grew flax, I throw in a heaping tablespoon of ground flax.

After several disappointing attempts, today I finally baked a decent soda bread. Then I saw your video. I have to say after a lot of research yours is one of the better explanations/instructions. The most important thing I learned is to Fully Preheat the oven. The heat is key to getting the rise right and the bread should not sit around at all once that buttermilk starts reacting with the soda. Someone said that while you shape the loaf, you should touch the bread as if it were "blazing hot". That too was good advice. Thank you for this excellent info to Irish Soda Bread. Also, and this is important, don't use bread flour for soda bread. The higher protein content will react less well with the soda and will impede the rise. Irish flour is very low in protein.

Hi Mary. At around 13:10 you mentioned if we know someone who when they bake their bred, puts their bread in a cake pan with another cake pan over the top of it. That person is Steve over at Artisan Bread with Steve. But he doesn't use two cake pans. He uses two bread pans and clips them together to make a Dutch oven. It works very well.

Guten Tag.! Mary, Thank you for this receipe. Good to know about the soda. Especially this curfew time in case we ran out of yeast. I did last and the shops didnt have anymore. Because of the contamination risk, I think many are baking their own bread. The dried yeast was out in all the shops around me, until this week no where to be found. We get the cube but good to have your receipe. I am cooking the chicken soup right now. I am cooking traditional to keep healthy. We are past 60 and considered high risk. I wish you good health. Thank you for your wonderful receipe.

At 4:02, you made my day. I'm always a little hesitant about what "all purpose flour" is, and you totally made it clear. Thanks so much for this recipe too. I am going to try it out. No buttermilk, but you've given us help with that too :-) Thank you. Stay well.

Nice Irish Soda bread Mary ~ Good Job !!! I love making this. I also do some {what I call} non-plain versions (sometimes) with Italian Herbs and different (grated) cheeses & minced Garlic ... My other version is a Sweet one that I add Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, a lil nutmeg to & sometimes some cranberries (soaked in a lil warm water 1st) as we don't like raisins ~ I later a drizzle a lil' Maple Syrup over the top after it's baked - neither are Irish (per se) but Yummy : ) Re: 13:05, I think you are referring (possibly) to the *FAKE DUTCH OVEN* method that Steve (as in) (You-tube channel) ... artisanbreadwithstev - teaches people : ) He uses 2 Metal Clips to keep the 2 pans together : )

Omigosh that sounds so good with rye and the WW flour too! Could I have your recipe version? I love rye and I try to stay to whole grains. I think traditional ppl ate whole grains too until refined flour became affordable then they wanted to be “fancy” (so they could start having tooth decay like the rich - and suffering other maladies and dying). Anyway, always looking for successful wholegrain recipes. If you soak it, all the better!

Hi sweetest friend, I don’t know if you will see this post, but I am interested in a recipe and instructions on how to make an Irish Soda Bread similar to that of Central Market’s loaf. Every time I came to Dallas to visit my sister, Houston or Austin, I always stopped to get several loaves! I would not know even where to start. Does it have caraway seed? Currents or raisins; sugar for a bit of sweetness? Have you ever tried their yummy rendition? Thank you for sharing your years of wisdom, tips, tricks, substitutions and solid advice! Hi Mary, I just came to your channel because I was looking for a yeast free bread without eggs. (I cannot eat eggs). I really liked the recipe. Thank you. One question, can one also bake this in a bread pan??.... On another note, although I cannot use a lot of your other recipes, because I am a vegetarian, but, it was such a pleasure to watch you. You're a lovely, lovely person and so sweet. The way you present your recipes is really enjoyable.

I made a loaf of this with white bread flour and one with store brand “traditional” whole wheat. Also egg, sugar, and a fat. They both turned out very well. But yeah, it’s “cake bread.” In my total of five weeks baking experience, I’ve decided that 23 cents worth of yeast and 8 minutes of kneading produces honest-to-gosh bread! And, yes, Mary does have rather a delightful screen presence . . . 😄

Another idea. To keep it from being over whelming you could put out smaller cookbooks on individual topics such as one for preservation, bread, etc and include the corresponding video on how to do each recipe with the book.

You make everything come out perfect. I tried making your no knead half all purpose and half whole wheat bread. It turned out okay, but it surely did sink in the middle. I was a little disappointed in it......but we’ve eaten it. When it was warm out of the oven , We ate it w/ hamburger soup . My 44 year old son had come to bring me potatoes because my store was out, and He sat down to eat w/ me. He thought the bread was delicious. Next time I will use 3 Cups all purpose and only 1 cup whole wheat. So now on to the soda bread. Which I will give a try. Thanks for your video. Your fun to watch.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that yours was a bit concave. These things can happen. Bread baking can be persnickety. I think you’ll find this the soda bread very easy and I’m confident you’ll have success. And for the no kneed whole-wheat… Yes, using more all purpose flour will guarantee a perfect result. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

That looks fabulous!! I haven’t made Irish soda bread, but I’m going to. When I lived in NY they ate ISB a lot! And, I loved it, as well. I use a Dutch oven when I bake bread. It makes a beautiful loaf!! Thank you, Mary. ❤️❤️🥰❤️

Oh Evelyn, Wouldn't that be delightful!! I live in the Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio right in the middle of Texas. :-) I think I am about 3-4 hours from either of them. Not too far as Texans say! Love, Mary

I am interested in making oatmeal where they literally left it (after simmering) in a flat pan for days at a time. It kept fermenting (beyond the traditional 24 hr presoak). They would just cut off what they wanted as they wanted it. They must have made tons of it at once to have at the ready. But it was also very good for you. I bet it got tangy so you would have to be used to it but I’d like to try it. The original MegaCooking! Lol I think it’s along the lines of Fried Mush too. Make it up night before, pour into loaf pan and slice to fry in morning. I would presoak my corn too. But that goes in fridge to get hard. Anyway, any investigation you want to do into the fermented oatmeal would be appreciated. I think it’s Sally Fallon who talks about the drawer full of oatmeal being cut out a piece at a time.

Yes indeed!! This is such a wonderful idea!! Yes, Sally Fallon discusses this in her book nourishing traditions. This is what the Scottish people would do. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️
