How does one balance being a natty vegan bodybuilder and a carnivore powerlifter running on dbol?

At the end of the video you said “our standards for Judo are higher [than for BJJ].” Why is that the case? The demands of the sport or because BJJ is less professional and so the overall level of the competitors is lower?

It's partly the demands of the sport and partially the culture of the sport. It's a long road to convince some BJJ athletes why strength is great

Reaching the highest level in judo is just inherently more difficult. For one, judo requires more power, speed, balance and just overall athleticism than bjj. Additionally, the sport is far more international, meaning that the talent pool and level of competition is far greater. I would really recommend checking out Rhadi Ferguson's thoughts on the topic. He achieved a pretty high level in judo, bjj and mma, and has talked about the differences between the two disciplines on a few podcasts.

The stand-up element has a much larger importance in Judo than in BJJ. So SnC has a bigger carry over. Much like it doesn't in wrestling.

Judo is a standing art so it requires more strength, power and speed. In jiujitsu you want to get the person to the ground. And a big part of that reason is that on the ground a strong person looses alot strength, power and explosivity. Hence why jiujitsu is a "better" art for the smaller person.

S&c judo question: I'll start collecting points for my black belt in about a year. I've got a couple of small bjj comps and a couple of smaller judo comps in that time for me to practice competing. How would you reccomend an older (35y/o) judoka approach a year which is only low level comps leading into what might be a prolonged season?

This was a very understandable example model of how to handle the training volumes of big variety and prioritising different things at different points of time. I feel like Sika is currently the number one place for combat sports athletes to figure out S&C to support their sport. I haven't seen anyone else lay it down as comprehensively and in a way that you can apply it without copying the training. And focusing on the evidence based tried and true fundamentals of S&C for combat sports. No wonder people are gravitating towards Sika for information. The point about lower intensity training (for example not throwing as much and not doing as much randori) until you're peaking for judo and lowering the gym intensity was a solid take. I noticed for myself that practice sessions where there's barely a couple of throws, mostly honing in on technique and setups and building up opportunities I don't even notice it the next day anymore. However sessions where you get thrown repeatedly are definitely felt the next day (and if you're lazy like me and doing lifting after judo because there's a gym next to tatami, those sessions show in lifting, whereas the more technical ones work as great warmup). It's important to condition for getting thrown, just like how lifting remodels your bones etc, but it's still taxing. Like lifting heavy without building muscle as a benefit. Will be considering applying a lot of the concepts and dynamics mentioned here, even though as non-professional you might not always have as much control over what type of training intensity the sessions are, you can probably still adjust the rest on weekly intensity. Also an eye opener to how little a champion might actually compete in big tournaments. My instructor actually commented on him how for one season he "disappeared in the mountains" and then came back to just win the Olympic games. Completely forgot you guys said Ono's name any odd way, on this it was spot on.

Love this lads. Would love to hear your thoughts on drilling against progressive resistance vs constraints-led coaching (ecological approach) for learning BJJ or Judo faster. John Danaher favours the former but recent success with the latter by coaches such as Greg Souders is offering some interesting counters. Judo and Wrestling have a lot of drilling without resistance too, so I’d love to hear your thoughts as coaches/competitors

What is a good alternative to the Olympic lifts for someone with no background in them for their SnC?
@jonmatrix90082 ай бұрын
Good question. I'm a big fan of the behind the neck push press, but I'd like to hear Eoin's thoughts on this.
@ronan44962 ай бұрын
I think paying for a handful of sessions to learn the lifts with a good local coach is invaluable.

power clean/hang power clean don't require too much technique ( for S&C purposes). Box/broad jumps and push press.

What about Deloads ? Do you make Deloads ? If yes only S&C deload full deload or only Judo deload?

I just won a national judo tournament recently but my S&C is a guess. I would love to follow a program like Ono’s but idk where to start. I’m always finding pure strength programs or pure conditioning programs. I just won to be fast, strong, & have great stamina related to judo. Please help lol. I love the reaction video to ono

Run our Becoming A Horse program on the app and combine it with a conditioning program and you'll be a beast. It has hypertrophy, strength and power. Email us if you have any questions!
