In the United Kingdom there is courses in Northern Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland law which lets you practice across the UK.

I live in the UK and from my understanding, you can only take the Bar Exam in New York and California. Do you know if there's a way to transfer to another state once you've qualified?

In the US, each state has their own bar exam. So if you want to practice law in a certain state, you would take that state's bar exam. There are certain circumstances where you wouldn't have to take it again (like the in house counsel exception) but it really depends. There is also the UBE (universal bar exam) which is accepted in several states that is another option.

Bankruptcy Law counts as Federal Law, right?

Bankruptcy courts are not really ART III Courts. When you take Federal Courts Class, after Civil Pro I and II, in Law School, it will make more sense. To Practice before Bankruptcy Court in Florida, you must first pass the Fla State Bar. After the State Bar, you then pass a Federal Courts test for the Southern District of Florida and provide 3 attorney recommendations. After The Federal Courts, you have to pass a special test for the Bankruptcy Court. In Florida, we have a higher than average number of Bankruptcy cases. Further, Bankruptcy is one of the harder areas of Law to practice, heavy on the Code. The Court is under a lot of stress, so we (royal we) have to have to set some "bars" to keep the case load moving. You will find other jurisdiction with less requirements.

Hey, I know that your question wasn't directed towards me but I think you should go for it and follow your dreams no matter your age! There are people of all ages in Law school and more so in the in the work place as well. Although we may be surrounded by a lot of younger people at law school by the time that you get to the work place your age shouldn't make you stand out amongst other lawyers !

single mom I would say that make sure that you have applied to and been accepted by your desired Law school before leaving your job. I'm from the UK but I think you usually work/intern at firms during summers between each year of US law school so perhaps you get a job after graduating law school from these firms. In terms of other younger graduates, don't compare yourself to other people. One's age or aesthetic appearance is superficial and not indicative of whether they will be a more skilled lawyer than you or not. Honestly I would focus on your present and the benefits of being a mature law student such as the past experience and skills you've gained from working for years in non- law fields. This could help you to bring a unique perspective to your law classes. Honestly, when I set goals or pursue my dreams I trust in God that he is working everything out for my highest good 💕 (I know that you may not be religious but this is what has helped me with insecurities that I have faced when pursuing big/ambitious goals)

I don't think there is much age discrimination for lawyers but I have only been practicing for a few years. There were lots of people who were mothers and fathers or older people who are going back to law school when I was in law school and if anything, they often did better because they had more life experience and knew what they wanted to do. It might be difficult to study since you have a family but if you can make time for it, then go for it. It also depends on what kind of lawyer you want to be. If you are hoping to go into a big law firm then it's going to be tough on your family life since you have to work long hours. During law school there's also many networking opportunities that will be at night etc. that may be difficult. basically, if you can manage your time well you can make it work but with a child it just makes things a bit more difficult unless you have help or babysitting.

No! stop while you are ahead. It is true that I went to Law School with people in their thirties and one in his fifties. The Man in this fifties, it was his life dream. The others, it was a jumble of working paralegals or career dead-end stalls. At 43 y.o. do you want to take on $100K + interest in Law School debt? Do you realize your kid's tuition bills and your retirement coming faster than you think? Can you handle 50+ hour work-weeks with erratic income? Are you good enough at Sales to prospect clients? Can you run a small business by yourself?

What is the TOLES exam? If you want to be business lawyer then I would suggest during law school to get internships at corporations or if you want to work at a law firm doing corporate law, finding a law firm to work for during the summer. You don't need anything in particular but maybe you could focus on corporate or drafting classes in law school.

I don't think it matters that much - what matters more is what law school you go to. Sometimes where you go for undergrad could help you get into a better law school but again - I don't think it matters that much.

Well that explains it -at least how the waiver works given the diverse requirements of a given state. I know California, Louisiana, Florida and Hawaii do not allow such liberties...yet. New York has one of the most difficult bar exams, but as of 2016 allows the UBE exemption in order to compete with other states with lesser difficulties in terms of requirements. The backlash for this allowance is that the state has been inundated with more skilled labor than there are legal jobs to fill -making NYC one of the most selective and cut-throat vetting processes for legal recruiters -and quite a lucrative career for those that know the dynamics of the process. I think it depends on where you want to work - if you want to work in California, it's probably best if you went to school in California and more specifically, the region or city where you want to work because you create good contacts and internships from the areas around you. Also, your school will help you to study and gear yourself towards the state's bar exam. Not saying it's impossible to go to school in Iowa and then take the California bar exam but it might be a bit harder.

New York is one of six states without reciprocity rules that allow out-of-state lawyers employed by in-state entities to practice locally.

new york has an in house counsel registration process that allows in house counsel that have a state bar membership in a different state to practice law for the specific company they work for. since I don't go to court nor do I represent local clients, it's okay and I don't have to take the new york bar exam.
