My strategy whenever I play Crusader Kings is to make my first character a horrible monster with maxed out Martial skills via the Character Creator, to have him conquer and lay waist to all his neighbours, and to have him imprison and execute any who would threaten his reign or endanger the sanctity of his lineage--especially his own children, who might split his inheritance. Then he inevitably dies, and I play his heir like a normal person with a much larger kingdom than I should realistically have. It's great.
