There are many videos on head movement technique. However, there is a lack of instruction on how you can be quicker to move your head away from a punch. The answer isn’t necessarily your reflexes. It’s that you’re not being taught small, critical details such as the precise timing of head movement. In this video, we’ll go over that and more.
00:00 Tip 1 - Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
01:16 Tip 2 - When EXACTLY to Move
02:18 Tip 3 - Hand and Shoulder Work
03:53 Tip 4 - Footwork
04:59 Tip 5 - Don’t Just Move Your Head!

I might have learned this from you or someone else but one of the most interesting things about head movement is just like you mentioned is that you can combine it with counterpunching too. Slip to the outside sets up the uppercut and left hook, but it also is the same motion for an overhand right, so you can keep slipping to the left to bait them into worrying about the the hook or upper and then hit them with the overhand. I also took what you said about the overhand right and I'm practicing an overhand left like GGG too. Slip on the inside and throw the rear upper and have them thinking about that, then throw a chopping left hook off of slipping to the inside.

Glad to hear you’re remembering stuff from the past videos bro! Those are some smart set ups! It’ll definitely take lots of practice to master it effectively, but I’d like to know how it works for you if you ever implement it in sparring. The overhand left hook that GGG does always made me feel like it would break my hand if I did that 😬. The way it’s positioned and connects looks so awkward to me lol.

@@coachpillowfists For sure man! Yeah it's a really awkward punch. The best way I can describe it is my palm faces outwards and my knuckles come down. Only tried it in shadowboxing and on the bag it will def be some time before I attempt it in sparring haha.

Thank you! In terms of weight lifting, squats and deadlifts are pretty essential exercises imo for power and endurance. Back exercises are pretty essential as well such as pull downs and rows.

Awesome work, man. I know you're a huge canelo fan as am I. This may seem like a basic request, but can you make a video on blocking punches at an advanced level? Like do's and don'ts? I notice some boxers can block like 95% of punches (even flurries) coming at them. I've been trying to slow down videos and dissect how they do it. Everyone know about the high guard, but being super efficient with it is what I want to take my boxing to the next level. Are there moments where being blinded by your own gloves during blocking is preferrable? like just for one punch and then move out the way? or is one eye always looking at the opponent's nonpunching arm when you block their punch. Trying to figure out best moments to block head punches with bringing the your elbow up to your face level as well. Thanks.

Thank you bro! 🙏🏽 I hear what you're saying. I don't really like to use blocking as a primary means of defense like that because I just feel like it's too draining and can wear you down. I'll do a video more specifically on the topic of blocking one day though. Canelo is my favorite fighter, but I don't like that he's been moving his head less and relying more on his high guard to block punches. Perhaps that was a business decision he and Eddy Reynoso made because his boxing age is getting older and his reflexes are slowing down so maybe they're getting him more acclimated to blocking. Perhaps because head movement is more of a young man's primary tool of defense. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Just my thoughts 😆

Winky has a very good high guard style he’s super active with it though not passive he combines the high guard with head movement, footwork , and other defense/counter punching

I'm not sure if I see myself doing a video on a specific individual's fighting style anytime soon. Andy Ruiz has a cool style though. His upper body movement kind of resembles Mike Tyson a little bit, and his combination punching resembles David Benavidez 😆.

Ok, but what if you’re gigantic like I am, and I try to keep out of the way but sometimes I just can’t move that fast… sounds stupid, but teach me!
@coachpillowfists

That’s why you need to practice practice practice repetitively! You can never get enough practice. I don’t know how gigantic you are, but Tyson Fury and Andy Ruiz are some big boys with fast head movement so it CAN be done!
