"Life's beauty is inseparable from its fragility," says psychologist Susan David. In a special virtual conversation, she shares wisdom on how to build resilience, courage and joy in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Responding to listeners' questions from across the globe, she offers ways to talk to your children about their emotions, keep focus during the crisis and help those working on the front lines. (This virtual conversation is part of the TED Connects series, hosted by head of TED Chris Anderson and current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers. Recorded March 23, 2020)
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Chris and everyone at TED, thank you so much for organising these chats! There's an avalanche of opinions, facts and misinformation falling on us from all sides. If I've ever worried about being in a bubble and not knowing where to turn, the feeling's definitely been amplified by being closed up at home. You know the brightest minds and I'm so happy I get to listen in depth to their thoughts on what is going on. Chris' questions are always excellent, it's like TED Interview but pandemic special! Thank you and please keep them coming.

This really got me thinking about recognizing our own emotional behavior cues. Recognizing that the feelings of fear and sadness are normal and not a defining character. Understanding your emotions and working through what is needed to adress them is the big takeaway I got from this. I also completely agree that the social media influence is conditions us to reject these normal feelings making it harder for us to come face to face and work them out.

Yes. We have to accept the fears in our life because that is the reality. It is OK to get scared. From that, will get our strength from ourselves so that we can still fight the reality of danger. 💪 Fighting! And always pray. God is always there. 🙏

Once I was attending a Laurie Anderson "concert". At some point she said (not literal): "It is totally ok, in these times, to feel sad. What we must try, is to feel sad without being sad." I just wrote it down, and I still bring that simple thought with me.

I wore a mask to our local market today. The woman who worked there started crying and thanked me. She said that I was the first person to wear a mask, and how upset she is that people don't care enogh to wear a mask around her. Also, because of the mask, we looked deeply into each other's eyes to communicate.

It's essential to just let ourselves feel real emotions right now. Whatever it is, we need to acknowlege that emotion non judgmentally. As Ms. Susan said, those emotions are signposts leading towards valuable self-knowledge and wisdom. We need to be honest with ourselves so we could learn and grow from this collective suffering.

Step one: Acknowledge your negative feelings, fears and anxiety *BE HUMAN. TRYING TO HAVE A PERFECT MENTALITY FROM THE ON-SET WILL MAKE YOU CRAY CRAY* let your self feel it, dwell on it and rationalise it for some time. Also you may want to acknowledge that you are getting a bit insane because life ain't normal anymore. Step 2: Once you're done with all the whining, crying, groaning and indulging in the negative feelings... Pick yourself back up and reset. Figure out what you wanna be and want to accomplish within your new discomfort that you have to embrace - the confinements of your own home, with social and economical limitations, and slowly build the new life that you will have to live with. Wether you like it or not, you gotta adapt and flourish with a new set-up you have to live with.

Who needs toilet paper when you have 1/3 of these comments
@FrancesShear
@FrancesShear 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know why whenever someone says the phrase, "hoarding toilet paper" it brings to mind in me a scene in which I see f a whole room full of only white toilet paper and that makes me want to laugh instead. For me right now having enough strength and energy to shovel snow and ice off my steps and sidewalk is of utmost importance when needing to have enough energy to once a week go on the bus to do my grocery shopping too. I look forward to getting out of the house to do my own grocery shopping. Same goes for taking the bus to visit my grandchildren. To keep enough fitness and energy to do that I must make a point of going out for a walk at least twice a week and doing my physiotherapy exercises every day after being a passenger in a roll over car accident 10 months ago at almost age 63 with chronic health conditions to begin with. I keep thinking, what about others who have just been in a car accident right now who cannot access physiotherapy treatments now after just being discharged from hospital? Just last Friday while riding the bus I saw the aftermath of 2 serious car accidents. Staying home instead of 'social distancing' alone while driving a car is helping to prevent more car accidents from happening so don't feel the least bit guilty for working at home thorugh Skype or whatever.

It is interesting that in this video what it is being called "emotional agility" it sounds identical to what any mindfulness program teaches. I wonder if the lady is aware that buddhist and current mindfulness coaches teach this for more than 2 K years -in the case of Buddhist- and for the last 20 years -in the case of secular mindfulness-... I wonder why she felt the need to called something else, maybe she things EA is an all together new appoach to our emotional lives or maybe she needed a new catchy name to be able to sell books and do courses in the over saturated field of mindfulness.

That is exactly what I was thinking while listening to her TED talks. She is describing mindfulness, and the ability to simply sit with yourself, with your own thoughts, and be CONTENT. At peace. To accept the universe instead of fighting it. Which is exactly where you find happiness finally.

Hopefully this will just make our species focus on cleanliness and sanitation better instead of half assing it like we have been. It's about time we had those cool airlocks that scan a laser beam over you that kills all microbes before you walk into a room.

first idea good. second idea bad. because a human is mostly made up from nonhuman cells. they enable digestion, keep the skin flexible etc. only very few microbes are a problem.

Rajo1012 Except we take a shower once/twice a day and that kills 99.9% of microbes, do you never take a shower or? I’m talking about a UV light (which we already have, it’s just slow) that might scan your body and kill microbes quickly like as if you just took a shower.
