If you were to work in sales for a living, you’d find that there are quite a few customers who are as devious and unethical as the worst dealers and will be found stooping to whatever new low it takes to save a few quid. Sadly, using his phone and computer to call other dealers for a better price sounds pretty shabby to me.

The dealer delivery fee is simply there to make the discount figure look impressive. The main things to focus on is the total drive away price, build date and warranty commencement date. The warranty commencement/expiry date should be note under ‘special conditions’ on the contract.
@ryantaylor65304 жыл бұрын
The old adding $200 floor-mats so they have something to discount to make you feel happy is also still a thing.
@chazkdarwin38754 жыл бұрын
Ryan Taylor I always just factor cabin mats in when costing deals because if there is no mats on delivery the customers will ask for them anyway. If I throw them in at delivery when asked, I’d need to raise a repair order, print it and have the sales consultant take it to spare parts department to get the mats (hoping they are in stock) to then muck around unpacking and fitted them wasting everyone’s time. If the existing R/Os have been processed I would then have to cost the mats to another deal. There is not much worse than a universal floor mat, every car should have genuine mats. If you don’t throw the mats in at delivery you look like a prick and probably won’t receive referrals, which are often nice.

This is great advice! I've used this technique multiple times in buying a vehicle..walking out the door is usually the kicker. Leave go home...the phone will be ringing when you get there if your offer was fair. May not work every time, but when is does you will feel you didn’t get fleeced. Cheers.
@kensmith56944 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is a good reason to give the home number and not your cell. You can imply that you are going to the dealerships down the road as you leave. If they call you letting them stew for an hour or two can be good.

Great video and tips John One of my old moves when I was looking is email all the dealers with your intentions and price you want to pay for the vehicle in question. Most will not bother to reply but the ones that do are always having a hard time selling cars that month and it makes it easy to see the people who actually want the business. Now days with the down turn of new car sales it would be a free for all.

I have bought a few new cars in recent years, first one had a dealer tell me why I should only buy the top model Swift when I wanted the base model. I asked him for a test drive of the base model and rather than allowing it he stood there for 10 mins telling me why I shouldn’t get it. I ended up telling him I was just looking and leaving. Went to the next dealer and bought the middle one from them instead because it had a few features I liked. I was firm on price, didn’t let the after sales care girl have a chance (and she was really working her assets to try and convince me, even left the room at one point and came back with top unbuttoned lower!). That set me up well with the next 2 trips to dealers, 1st trip I bought a Mazda 2 on my terms and 2nd trip I wanted a Mazda 3 but the dealer just couldn’t work it out, they wanted to give me 1k off car and 9k trade for 1yo Corolla. Ended up leaving and got a call on Monday offering 11k but the deal still sucked so I left it, still have that damn Corolla! Can honestly say it was after watching your videos that I went to buy my swift and the process really does work!

Hi John. My 19 yo son is in the process of buying a new Nissan Navara ( yeah, i know i know, but what do you say to 'em ) SL 140Kw 4WD crew cab. He was itching to get that hard earned deposit out and scurry out to the nearest Nissan dealer. He is a diesel mech apprentice, so the $$$ are hard to come by. He is at the age where everyone is ' old mate ', well, BIG life lesson coming up. Very quickly, he has learnt that a big percentage of new car salesmen are NOT such. After taking your lessons on board, he has saved a substantial amount. Keeping them on the back foot and them continually back pedalling is the way to go. Every exchange has been less than a couple of minutes in the front yard, nothing inside. The time, sympathetic and difficulty of sourcing exactly what you want B/S, totally ignored. Their ' best prices ' ignored and putting in your price and sticking to it ( a bit harder with a new series vehicle, and not in stock, but still not impossible ). The pleading and trying to keep you onsite and sms's are real, making them wait till after the weekend and so on. Its amazing how they will go quite a way to meet your price, all for a bit of homework on your behalf. BIG life lesson learned, and according to the son, buying a new car is a cross between a double period of Maths A & B, and having a wisdom tooth pulled without pain killer. Ohh well, such is life. Anyway, thankyou for your invaluable tips and advice.

Dealer demos are essentially rental cars and should be treated as such in negotiations. Big discount. They've probably been driven like a rented mule and haven't been maintained particularly well, despite being dealer property. And always compare/negotiate the driveaway price to prevent any shenanigans with fees or other nonsense.

Wow - I am an Opal cutter and vendor and it seems like the car sales and the gemstone sales industries are worlds apart; when it comes to adversarial customers that make the entire sales process incredibly difficult, it makes it very hard for me to discount my items heavily. If someone has been pleasurable in their enquiries and then asks for a discount, I'm far more likely to slash the price to a lower amount. I do have a lot more percentage of the sales proceeds needed to cover my costs though due to my manufacturing in house of the gems, so further enquiries that make the process difficult for me make it more costly. I wonder if that may have anything to do with the complete difference in approaches.

A mate told me about a super deal he did on a 'Demo' car. Sales gal asked for price he was prepared to pay. He wrote it on a post it note from her desk and handed to her. "We can't do that price, do you have a better offer?" So he wrote same price with a .01 after it. She laughed - went to sales manager and deal was done. He saved 27% off listed price. For his extra cent! Proud of him. Sometimes 0.01 can be all the difference required!

A good deal on newish shit, possibly with the ambush location soon turning vacant plus being a pop up for hot tubs on occasion, would be somewhat problematic. There is a former very iconic radio station in my neck of the woods which runs an unusual amount of Jeep and Range Rover spots. Also ones for all kinds of posh home improvements. The signs are pretty obvious.
@kensmith56944 жыл бұрын
A good tack is to reduce your offer when they suggest a higher number. Don't make it much lower. They may not even notice and if they do, you can explain it as just being the cost of your time. If they don't notice, sometimes there head is playing the movie the way they expected it to go and they will think you increased your offer. They will then notice and be suddenly slightly wrong footed.

just been through this on a demonstrator wound up calling consumer affairs. They stated its only a used car once the dealer has sold it to a customer. Until then it is a new car that has been used as a demonstration vehicle and should come with all the warranties and other entitlements as any other new car. Doesn’t matter if it has 9km’s or 2000km’s on the clock or was registered 2days ago or 2years ago. If the only owner of the vehicle is the original dealership then it is a new car. Dealer wasn’t happy when presented with this in writing but couldn’t wiggle out of it either. So the 2018 np300 yes that’s right 2018 demo vehicle with 400km’s is under new car warranty till 2025. And we got it for a stealaway price. Don’t let them bullshit you a demo is a new car under consumer law.

Problem been is that it showed up with 50km on the clock, it has smoke ash on the drivers seat, center console and between. Dirty Boot marks in front and back of passenger side, rear armrest down, drivers and both passenger door trims marked and the Dash cam disconnected, also only 1/3 of a tank of fuel when it should have been Full. With all these Km's on the clock, would I be right in saying the car would be "used or a Demo"? I have owned several new cars in my life and none have had anywhere near these amount of Km's and never had Damage or boot marks and especially never had smoke ash in a new car.
@scottsummers8194 жыл бұрын
50km probably a bit high but my brand new Dmax in 2015 had 27km on it, I guess it depends how far they were driven around getting on/off ships, trucks and lots. As for the other stuff, I'd lay odds it was on the careless attitude of the delivery driver. I've seen brand new cars on the backs of trucks being driven around in the rain with the windows down. I'd be contacting your insurance company and asking them to have the car cleaned and send the bill to the delivery company.

Hi John, thanks for the great advice. I am in the market for a new/demo car in the next month or so, but I have a trade in. Is there a way not to get ripped off with a trade in? I can imagine myself getting a good deal on a car, but then getting offered peanuts as trade in value - therefore I still lose and the dealer still wins. Would it be best to say 'I can pay $x, and that includes trade in'? Thanks.
@etherealessence4 жыл бұрын
Tip number one. Separate the transactions. When you go the the dealer, you only go there to buy the car. Sell your current car privately, and arrange financing through your bank or other lender. The more power you put in the dealer's hands, the more X's there are for you to stand on.
@scottsummers8194 жыл бұрын
When I bought my Dmax in 2015 the dealer only offered me $3000 on my 98 Hilux. I said to them If I can sell it before you deliver can I just give you the $3000 in cash. They said yep no problem. Put the Hilux on Gumtree and sold it within a week for $6500. Win for me but still had the backstop of not having to borrow that extra 3k and maybe be stuck with a car that wouldn't sell as well. If your trade in is an older car most dealers are just throwing you the bone of not having the hassle of getting rid of it, most of them will just send it straight to auction and be done with. They low ball the offer simply because it's not worth the effort or paperwork most of the time.

On a different topic, I heard something on the current oil price war between Saudi, Russia and the US that made me mad. We are used to paying $70+/barrel, but the Saudi price of production is less than $3. US fracked oil needs to be more than $60/barrel to break even. Would it be fair to say that if US shale oil did not exist world oil price would be lower?
@temur724 жыл бұрын
No The price of oil is set by a supply demand curve. Current world wide demand for oil is around 90 million barrels per day. The Saudis can produce approx 11 million barrels per day. If they were the only supplier the price would be $200 a barrel. What US shale oil is doing is setting a near term max to the price of oil. That is around the cost of production plus some profit. So US shale will keep the price from hitting $90 per barrel (assuming no unforseen supply disruptions). It is quick to come online. It is the max price setter in the oil markets today. Without it prices would be much higher. Note the price war is likely designed to drive US shale producers into bankruptcy as many are deep in debt

I walked out twice during the same "negotiation". Didn't even get as far as my car. After the second walk out, the deal was signed at my original terms. Walking away works in most negotiations - even with bank managers who can't possibly drop their interest rates. Just think of it this way ... your back speaks louder than your mouth. My other tip is to speak directly to the manager - the person making the decision. Then, you don't have to put up with the BS pretend argument between the salesman (good guy) and manager (bad guy). And, sales commission is suddenly not a factor in the deal. Put all details in writing (car, build date, colour, accessories ...) with your price and a bank cheque made out to the dealer for the deposit. All you need to say is: "Make that happen, and I'll sign up now."

I don't know how widespread this is, but Kia limits your choices of colour/model combinations. I lobbed at a dealership after checking the configuration thingy on the website. I want the red leather in a Stinger GT. I checked with them to see if there is a problem with the configurator, but no - some combinations are simply not allowed. Not even on special order. Having the cash readily available means that is pretty frustrating. Looking on the bright side I'll be able to enjoy the negotiations that little bit more because of the slowdown with corona. So is this choice restricting a thing to reduce costs in production or are Kia simply applying their fashion sense to my future car?

So I can bargain on a drive away price?
@realjohnboxall4 жыл бұрын
Yes.
@bruiser64794 жыл бұрын
No, you don’t “bargain”. That is allowing the dealership to control the conversation. Do your research. Like John says, establish what the value really is. Make your offer. Stick to it. Another tip, make the salesman walk to you. Make your offer out in the yard. Don’t ever follow him into the office to discuss your offer. Tell them you will give them ten minutes to come back and let you know if they will meet your offer. If they aren’t back in ten minutes you will have gone to the next dealership on your list. This strategy really concentrates the mind of a salesmen. Do not enter into any kind of discussion. You are simply requiring a simple yes or no answer to a straightforward question. “Will you sell me that car for this price, yes or no”. If the answer is no. walk away. Don’t look back. Let the salesman chase you.

Any tips on negotiating a price with a dealer on an EV down by 25%? Happy to pay 35k for a dealer used 2018 Ioniq but not 45k.

Rather pleased you're NOT any longer a button-up-shirt-and-tie-wearing reviewer saying unconfronting things about Hondas. Laughed out loud several times in this one, the vids seem to get better as you keep rolling.

How can i find the drive away price of an equivalent brand new car when the one im aiming at isnt sold new any more? Im aiming at a Hyundai Getz 2010. Maybe i should just aim at them dropping $1k.

Just bought a new motorcycle, 0 km (non demo) 2019 Honda "CRF250L Rally", original price NZ$9295 + ORC ($471.78 according to NZTA web site) = $9766.78. Advertised as runout for $7995 incl ORC. I offered $7250. They countered $7750 "I just don’t have the money in it to drop it below that". I replied "Another dealer has a 3 month old used one with 190 km advertised at $7500, they've already offered to discount from that. I'd enjoy a virgin bike more but 190 km isn't much, I'd not pay more than $250 extra to get a 0 km one. My offer is $7250, I can pay immediately and btw all businesses have to close for a few weeks starting in 48 hours". Fifty minutes later "I’ve spoken to our GM and lets do it. $7250 inc ORC". All done via email. So that's 25.77% off RRP plus ORC, or 27.08% off the bike itself, given that ORC are fixed.

When determining “fair value”, on a demonstrator being sold as “used”, remember that on a say $50k car you will cop transfer fees and on-roads costs, of probably $5k after you purchase it. So taking say 10% off the new car driveaway price $55k that already includes transfer fees & onroads - will bring you back to $50k, then you add the $5k transfer & on-roads, and your back up to the new car drive away price! It’s smarter to buy the new car! If your taking car company finance, it will likely be less interest rate than offered for the used demo so you lose out there also. If it’s last years model your already 1 year older when it comes time to re-sell it. Watch for a demo car made & registered in say Dec 2019, being sold in say March 2021 with only 4000kms. It’s basically new, but you pay higher interest, it’s 2 years older when you come to sell it. Your new car warranty is reduced by 16 months. I think JC is right when he suggests 15% off new car price.

Is the "9 km" real? In South Africa dealers frequently don't connect speedometers immediately, demo drivers do not clock up anything. I've even been in one such car. Does this never happen in Australia?

Used to be rife but nowadays lots of cars will throw 'codes' if this is done (Holden is one - Toyota is not)
