I used your resume checklist and had 3 interviews in one month and now one on the 9th of this month as a Tech Representative. I am hopeful, my major is computers and I go for companies with great workforce awards and benefits. I wish you health and happiness and pray you to continue to do what you do WE NEED YOU! This isn't taught in detail in public schools or even at all. You are helping the disadvantaged keep up with those who already have an advantage. Thanks a million!

I'm an internal candidate right now, but this is helpful too just in case I'm up against external candidates who have better qualifications. Well, the same applies to other internal candidates too.

I didn't ask if there were internal candidates because a part of me didn't want to know. I feel like even if they tell me, there is no saying they have a preference for me or another candidate over their internal person. At the end of the day, the internal consideration throughout the process feels like a slap in the face for all the hard work one puts into the entire process.

One other recommendation when competing against an internal candidate: continue to refer to yourself as somebody who could help the company "expand their horizons past the current status quo", listing some possible examples where the "new experience and fresh eyes" you'd bring to the role could help the company reach their goals sooner (or better in some way) - rather than them just filling the role with an internal candidate who'll NOT have as many fresh ideas you would have as the external candidate.

Andy I want to thank you for this session and actually was listening live on the day of a final live - out of town interview and posted a question which you answered. The net is I am GETTING CRUSHED by internal candidates - CRUSHED. And with that I consider myself to be a very strong leadership candidate. I also sadly fall in that damn age gap as well as being out of work gap. I am sadly in a bad place and have been giving it all I have and do have a strong network as well.

I have a schedule job-interview from my current company next week. They hired me as an Inventory Staff Accountant 7 months ago but I am more interested as a Staff Accountant in the accounting department. Andrew’s videos helped me land and successfully negotiated a salary increase to what the company is offering. Hopefully, everything goes well again to my game plan.

I've been watching a number of these interview preparation videos. Maybe it's because I'm an old man. So much time and energy goes into the preparation for these interviews. And so much time is spent in the job search. I couldn't imagine having the energy do anything once you finally get the job.

Respectfully, I disagree with step 0. Asking if there are any internal candidates conveys a defeatist attitude. By asking that, you are essentially asking if you are at a handicap. It signals that 1) You know internal candidates have an advantage or 2) You have a history of getting beaten by an internal candidate. I wouldn't advise asking if there are any candidates. What does it matter? You have to give it your all regardless. If the recruiter or hiring manager says yes, do you drop out of the race? What if another position opens up? They will not consider you.
@2steaksandwiches6652 жыл бұрын
I get your point and that’s why I have not done it in the past but I’m sort of getting The balls to just ask in the future. I’ve wasted 20 hours on interviews this year alone. Just to lose out to an internal candidate. I hate the companies have a policy about interviewing external people. They have no plans to hire Externally. I bet you it’s a 30% chance in most situations.

I have a problem with this whole thing. I’ve l ost out now to three jobs to internal candidates. Within the last four months. They move me all the way to the end and then Bam. A former coworker of mine will refuse to interview with a company that has an internal candidate. Why do these companies bother interviewing external candidates if they have a solid internal candidate? They waste everyone’s time. I have a feeling most of their minds are made up. I do like your idea of asking about an internal candidate. I’m going to start doing that from now on. And then I will bail out. It’s just not worth it.

Hi Andy, I appreciate the content you provide. I'm reentering the corporate scene after 5 years of strictly freelancing and consulting, spending time with my children. I have no way of bypassing the corporate application sites that require salary information and expectations. I've had the opportunity to learn and exhibit several executive level competencies such as sales leadership, integrated marketing, and communications but don't want my resume and headline/ elevator pitch to be too focused nor too generic, so that I don't miss opportunities. Also, does anyone really read cover letters? If they're not required, do we write one anyway? Please help and thank you in advance, as well as providing the valuable information you do.
@andylacivita5 жыл бұрын
Amber, welcome to the channel. A couple things....nothing is preventing you from bypassing corporate app sites other than your thinking. I have loads of videos on this. Check the ones on job search networking. Also, check the videos I have on going from contractor or self employed to full time and definitely check my video on how and when employers read covers letters. I’d also recommend watching my cover letter playlist where I give you several for just about any occasion.

Hi Andy, to combat this internal candidate disadvantage I provided a hiring manager with copies of my annual staff evaluations. I thought this is a solid format to prove my work ethic and success with my previous employer. I attached these copies in my “thank you for the interview” email. I really want this position but was that a wise move?
@andylacivita5 жыл бұрын
HI Jakeia, I don't think the move hurt you by any means. I also don't think that helps. Most interviewers don't put too much stock in evaluations from other companies from people they don't know.

Andrew, thanks for sharing these very helpful tips. During 2 separate 2nd interviews, when I asked what it took to be successful in the role, they mentioned "detail-oriented. I did my homework on the company prior to that, and found several errors on their website. I thought this would land me the job, but they still went with the internal applicant. Any advice?
