I've been a bow build main since ds2 and have done 3 bow only runs and I gotta say having access to ranged applications of scarlet rot and poison with little dedication to attacks that will leave you vulnerable makes you very strong early game, a trip to caelid at the beginning of the game and grabbing some butterflies goes a LONG way. I have to say this is a really good comprehensive guide and goes out of the way to include pretty much all the bow essentials even going to show the jump attack followed by roll attack combo. Genuinely great guide for those attempting a bow only run.
@Ligmaballin2 жыл бұрын
Jesus idk how you managed that, the only game from my experience where bows are decent is Elden Ring, but that's only because bows are more fleshed out and you can jump, in the previous games it just feels like you're holding and aiming with a 8x scoped massive sniper, it feels slugish and weird and if you shoot without aiming it's just slow and the damage isn't that great, the closest game which had decent ranged system imo was Bloodborne, because with the proper bloodtinge builds you could make a sniper or a bazooka build, be agile to avoid attacks and deal heavy damage like a glass canon

Footnote from the cheap seats: If you open up Nokron you can easily farm Spiritflame arrows as a replacement for the coldbone arrows. You can make a run where you kill 12 of the guys that drop them in about a minute, and they usually drop 10-15 arrows per run. Spiritflame arrows do twice the total damage of coldbone arrows, and also do 65 frost buildup instead of 60.

One tip for craftrd arrows: Do NOT craft all at once. Why? Because in the case that you run out of them and don't have a waypoint nearby/don't want to leave, you can craft them right where you are On another note: get a bow and use the Rain of arrows AoW with bleed arrows. You shoot more arrows in shorter time AND it consumes only 1 arrow per use. Very good video man!

I find it just a little bit sad that none of the gear that triggers off of Blood, Poison, and Rot will trigger if you're too far away from your target. It was a strange decision by the devs to have these proc based on proximity rather than having them proc when YOU trigger these effects. It's also a little sad that bows aren't stronger in general.
@ojcorp Жыл бұрын
is this true? i'm trying to find more info about this, but no luck
@TheSylveonSurfer Жыл бұрын
@@ojcorp Yeah, it's fairly easy to test. Go find an enemy that reacts slowly, like the Troll outside Godrick's boss room, equip only a bow, bleed arrows, and Lord of Blood's Exultation and/ or White Mask, proc bleed, and notice that they don't proc unless you're very close. Same thing goes for the Winged Sword Insignia and Milicent's Prosthesis. Those won't proc at all, no matter how hard you spam Barrage. Ultimately, your best options for a bow build are going to be Arrow's Reach, Arrow's Sting, and Spear Talismans. Your 4th Talisman slot is best used for something like Warrior Jar Shard/ Shard of Alexander or one of the defense talismans.

If medium bows are too sluggish for you early game, you can pick up a Short Bow near the Beachside Cave in Limgrave, or the Composite Bow near Bellum Church in Liurnia. Both are light bows so they draw quicker and have a better moveset.

Man i was hyped for a bow only character when i heard that bows were gonna be different in elden ring then i heard that the scaling was bad and i couldnt figure out how id make it work, so glad you made this video
@kayn9651 Жыл бұрын
Here's my suggestion and contribution for a bow build: Use Serpent Bow as your late game option, instead of Black Bow, and make it an Arcane build. Why? Because the Serpent Bow has inherent Arcane scaling, which not only increases the effectiveness of the Poison buildup, but also the status buildup of all arrows shot with the Serpent Bow. That means faster and harder hitting bleeds, poison and scarlet rot. - And yeah, you can switch from serpent arrows to rot arrows and apply both rot and poison at the same time, before switching back to bleed arrows. Which, again, with the Arc scaling they're not only going to apply more quickly, but also deal more damage. Then if you want to go beyond bows only, you have a plethora of options for dex-arc weapons, even just a simple Reduvia. - And if you want to be really spicy, get a dragon communion seal, and you can mix in those incantations with -the- best scaling seal in the game.
@Theeldenringguy Жыл бұрын
Yes but black bow does more damage and fires faster
@kayn9651 Жыл бұрын
@@Theeldenringguy That also means that you burn through more arrows, though, which can also lead to you running out of ammo before you arrive at a grace. - If you're not a speedrunner you're better off thinking in terms of damage per arrow instead of damage per second, when you can only hold 200 arrows on you at a time. Especially when you need to farm arrows.
@Theeldenringguy Жыл бұрын
@@kayn9651 Farming is fast using a rune farm = 150,000 runes to buy beast bones and blood rose. The black bow also is the only longbow with Barrage. Also, poison sucks
@kayn9651 Жыл бұрын
@@Theeldenringguy The best rune farm you can get with a bow is making the bird near albinauric hill fall off the cliff, but even then it's not the point. The main damage whichever way you're gonna go is from the Bleed procs. - With an Arcane build, you can make those bleed procs hit harder, but it will only work if your weapon has Arcane scaling on it, and the only one that does is the Serpent Bow. - The inherent poison on it is mostly irrelevant then, aside for just a bit of additional damage ticks simultaneous to applying rot with rot arrows, and then switching to bleed arrows to deal the majority of the damage. And even then, you completely miss the point that even with a billion runes, you can't carry more than 99 arrows of a kind on your person at any one time. If you play for Barrage, then you'll get more DPS, but less damage per arrow, so less total maximum damage output available to you before you need to return to a Grace. And also less damage from the rot and bleed procs, because of the lack of Arcane scaling on the Black Bow. I'm not denying that Black Bow might pull higher DPS, I haven't tested both to be able to tell for certain, nor that arrows are dirt cheap at pretty much any stage of the game you're in if you're willing to spend 15 minutes farming a few runes, but you on the other hand are completely failing to acknowledge the additional options I brought up. I'm saying "Yes, and", you're being stubborn trying to shove a categoric "no" down my throat. - And failing to add anything other than parroting what was already agreed upon in the first place. - So in other words, you're giving the same level of contribution as a broken record that's been running for 3 weeks without the decency to be anything more than a contrarian.

Haven't got the black bow yet but after watching this I think I'll grab the lion greatbow. Plus the tip on bleed arrows, awesome. Honestly Haven't used them much, but will now. Pretty much just been using normal arrows and fire arrows. Figured bleed would be a waste on smaller enemies if they die before you can even proc bleed. Sweet video.

Got my Serpent Bow! Woo! And I have a few tips, from my experience. In the Abandoned Cave: Flame, Cleanse Me is not hard to pick up before this, and VERY helpful in this cave. Also, I'm using the Blessed Dew talisman in here, which means that each time I get to a safe, dry spot, I can stop and let my rot meter go away AND my health completely fill up, saving my flasks for the enemies and boss fight later. I'll switch to the Arrow's Sting talisman before the actual boss fight. When you're on the ledge above the bow, first shoot the enemy that's below you. Then jump down to the RIGHT, where you can land on solid ground -- or a step or so from solid ground at the most. Stand on that solid ground until you're un-rotted and healed up again. Then you can hug the right-hand wall (right-hand from your perspective from that side, that is) and run get the bow, and safely get back to solid ground again. This way is MUCH easier than jumping down on the left or directly into the pool of rot. Also, in the tower when getting the Arrow's Sting talisman, it's very helpful to put the game into offline mode. Otherwise, trying to get onto the ladder while the guards are trying to kill you can be nearly impossible because of the bloody messages at the bottom of the ladder, which cause you to read messages rather than climbing. And don't worry about being able to get the chest open AND grab the item while being killed -- if you don't have time to do both, but just get the chest open, it will actually stay open for your next attempt, so the next time all you have to do is grab the item.

Did you ever finish the bow run? Tempted to do some bow gameplay lmao but I feel like they may be too weak I’m not great at the game haha
@Angi_Mathochist6 ай бұрын
@ivog2256 I'm still working on that run. I'm not very good either, and I'm thorough and slow for multiple reasons. :) Nearing the end now, though, and looking forward to doing the DLC in my NG+. I think to do ALL bows, you'd have to be better at the game than I am. Bows are very hard when you're trapped in a small arena with a boss. Bows don't do as much damage as other weapons, so killing with bites is often slow and uses a lot of ammo. A bow-only boss battle can take a long time and require a lot of dodging. It's totally possible once you have the Black Bow, which fires quickly, especially if the enemy can be poisoned and rotted and bled and frostbitten -- status arrows are great! But again, it does require you to get pretty good. In the field, away from boss arenas, it's much easier. I haven't stuck with bows only, though, myself. (That was never my intent.) I love ranged weapons and attacking from range is absolutely my preference whenever it's possible. I still do use bows a lot, and I have leveled up ALL the bows, crossbows, greatbows, and jar cannon, and they all have their uses. I love Rain of Arrows! Sky Shot is fantastic for enemies that are standing still. Greatbows fire slowly, they're great from a distance when you don't need to worry about fat rolling. I think the jar cannon is slept on a lot. With the explosive ammo, it really deals damage! But it is a bit slow and be careful of the knockback. I have expanded into magic as well. You don't get as much range with magic (rock sling and a couple others excepted), but you can still hit things without getting too close, and without using up ammo, either. You run through the FP sometimes, though. I do love the rot breath for many bosses, with a good spirit summons to distract. And poison mist for enemies that can be sneaked up behind. There's an ash of war, assassin's... approach, I think? That helps greatly with the stealth at times. I just put it on a dagger, to pull out when needed. I was using Moonveil Katana when I needed a sword -- I love katanas for their reach, and this one is very strong -- until I got Blasphemous Blade with its Taker's Flame, which lets you hit from a bit of distance and heals you too. So that's usually my go-to now. Along with Bolt of Gransax, a spear you can throw (or throw lightning from), which I've been using on certain tougher enemies for a while. Are you doing bows-only? Or do you like to have a variety of tools, like me?

Don't be mistaken, I love this video and guide, it's fantastic and a really fun idea for a build... but to anyone watching this, don't be fooled into thinking this is OP and every boss is going to fall over. In fact, this build is more like a challenge run than it is overpowered. The entire early game, you're struggling to choose between arrows or leveling up. Killing small enemies is a tremendous hassle as the lock on auto aiming is complete crap. Anyone who's played a caster knows how bad it is, only imagine if your spells didn't home in on enemies. That's bow. God forbid 2-3 rats attack you at the same time. Enemies slowly strafing right and left will be the bane of your existence. Wasting arrows on anything but bosses feels bad so you just end up running past everything. "Just git gud." I did. I beat the game with this build. But at no point was I ever "overpowered". It was pretty strong against Margit, Goddrick, and Rennala, but the same can be said about a lot of builds with the same amount of prep. When you get to bosses that actually know how to pressure you or dodge projectiles, this build falls apart quickly. In fact, this build had me existential at a few points in the run. Do I regret it? No, it was very fun. But new players beware, this isn't a build for the inexperienced. There's a reason most people who are "using" this build are using melee weapons as well. And please Fromsoft, buff bows!

I legit got hype when I seen my comment at the beginning of the video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣... Finally the bow build I'll have to use this build next because I'm having too much fun with your shield build.

I'm confused how you got the Serpent Bow to +6 before Margit. The video you linked in the description makes it seem like you killed the Fallingstar Beast in Sellia Crystal Tunnel, but how did you do that with a bow? Serpent Arrows I guess?

Love all of your builds there all wickedly fun. BUT this is by far my favorite.. all i did was change outfit duh fashion over function lol

Broooo you just made my bow build a lot more viable. I was struggling a bit lol

my dark souls 2 bow-only makeshift playtrough was the most intense, heavy and painful of them all, not even daggers-only or unarmed compared to what it felt like, specially on DLCs. and to manage to make bows into actual weapons for elden ring, a game where bows are supposed to be far heavily nerfed compared to any other souls game, is a feat that im unable to fathom. for all those who want to try this, have already, or are already, i got a candle lit up for you.

I've been playing this build for the last six hours. Easy setup, little to no experience needed, rewarding playstyle that feels smooth. I've beaten the game now several times and this puts all my builds to shame. To all who complain bow aren't viable I will just send here.

your combo is missing out on another shot you can fit in after your roll, so its effectively roll shot, jump shot, landing shot

has anyone ever once used regular arrows on the serpent bow and gotten it to proc poison? I don't think it actually does what it says.

Nice build. Hope you do one based around the sword of night and flame soon

omg I tried to start this build, it's so expensive to keep stocked with arrows, and if you buy thin beast bones they're almost the same price as a single special arrow, but you need 3 of them to craft an arrow. I got to level 40 mostly using the dagger and reduvia because of lack of arrows, I can finally kill the vulgar militia guys in caelid so I can farm runes to stock up on arrows, but jeez even if I get 600 in storage of multiple types I feel like I'll just constantly be stressed about how many I have. I guess this'll get better later on when runes are easier to come by, OH buuuuut the times when I was making the bow combat work, it felt pretty cool.

Looks like the passive poison was removed from the Serpent Bow. It's still mentioned in the description, but it no longer listed a passive effect and I couldn't get it to proc poison on anything.
@Zer0Cares7 ай бұрын
I know it sucks. Does it still make poison arrows more effective, or is it just basically a normal bow now

I tried like 80% of your builds. Amazing stuff. I also discovered some enemies which I did not know about before. Could you make a all bosses guide? That would probably take a while, but you choose one of your previous character builds, then guide us how to defeat every boss. And I mean all 165 of them☺️

Looking to do a bow build like this, thanks for the tips! I do have a question though, in the event I don't want to use status arrows (like bleed and such) and instead want to opt for elemental arrows, what would change? I'm fairly certain it won't be as potent as bleed buildup, but I think I would find more enjoyment from an elemental archer build than a bleed arrow spam build.
@chandlermccoy1813 Жыл бұрын
Gonna be pretty rough. Bows are actually insanely weak and really really rely on those status build up arrows. Some bosses and enemies may be weak to fire and shock, but not THAT weak. Would be so nice if all these elemental arrows scaled with arcane

Love the fact that I recently watched Fextra's NG+ bow build and chrightt's bow guide and great bow build and then you drop a bow guide. Of course I'm watching this to the end.

Playing so many different builds now, I personally think bow only build is definitely top 3 in most fun builds possible. The other two imho are death's poker and iron ball builds. I personally also add GreatJarCannon to this build because it shoots arrows. It is not very strong or useful, but it is fun so I allow it. Do not sleep on this build. It may look intimidating but it is one of the most fun builds possible in elden ring.

13:30 Thank you for this information. Me and my friends are doing a lvl 1 playthrough and Radahn is now my first Great Rune. Just now too. I just skipped Stormveil and B-lined it for Radahn.

For scarlet rot pool: face backwards and jump backwards. Gets you through it very quickly.

You made zero mention of the blue dancer talisman which is arguably the best talisman for a ranger when combined with being naked.

Something you might wanna look into but in previous souls games the leo rings counter attack trust dmg bonus applied to bows too. In elden Ring it's the "Spear Talisman" and should give a 15% dmg increase during enemy attack animations if it works.
