When his buddy's body wound up next to him after the sand storm he could have tried to position his dead body directly beneath his and then quickly taken his foot off the mine and letting the body absorb the explosion. When his friend stepped directly on one it only mangled his legs so they arent incredibly powerful so this should allow him to only take minimal damage.

There's a story back in WW2 (I think, it was around that time) when a British soldier was walking with his platoon. He was the radio operator, meaning he had that big ass radio and batteries on his back, essentially being the one man keeping them in contact with command. Anyway, they ended up triggering a trap that dropped a live grenade on them, the radio operator falling onto it backpack first and taking the blast. Surprisingly, he lived with a ruptured eardrum and no other enemies. His squad mates tried to get him to evac out of there but he convinced them they the enemy would come back to check on the trap and they set up an ambush, killing multiple enemy forces in it. The radio was shredded and you can find it in a British war museum that I forgot the name of

One thing you missed: Snipers are also trained to always lens cap their sniper scope before pulling off the weapon. You are trained to do this, so that if your scope ever gives of a glint, it is only if the enemy is look directly at you. This was poor thinking and lack of discipline on the soldiers part.
@JahWontPayTheBill2 жыл бұрын
They’re Marines, not soldiers. We don’t use caps. I’ve saw guys use cloth to help with lens flare. That’s about it. A plastic/rubber cap on your rifle is a great way to get killed. Imagine you’re exhausted from being in the field for a week. Your mental state is deteriorating. You’re hungry and thirsty and it’s 115 degrees outside. You see a guy who is about to blast you and your buddies so you ready up to grease his ass. Suddenly, you realize you can’t see out of your optic and you get smoked. Why? You forgot to take the caps off. Simple mistakes can get people killed. It’s best to just avoid them altogether by eliminating the chance of it happening.

16:15 I just had a thought… like you said, anti-personnel mines are triggered instantly upon contact. So since this mine hasn’t gone off, and since there’s a non-zero chance of a mine malfunctioning (even if it’s a low chance), the Berber keeps telling him to move on because it’s already clear the landmine he’s standing on is a dud- it didn’t go off when he stepped on it, so it’s not going to go off because it’s broken. So the Berber keeps telling him to just fkin walk out already and then keeps showing him the path to take. But the soldier is so afraid of the big scary mine that’ll surely explode if he steps off it, that he’s not understanding the fairly direct message the man is saying to him. EDIT: yeh I was mostly right 🤣 it wasn’t broken, just wasn’t even a mine at all.

The berber said he needs to "move on or he'll be stuck forever", he was actually talking about the tin cans placed in the sand as "mines". He should've been more clear (and not walked away immediately). No wonder he said that. It doesn't change the fact that they're still mines around AND you can't tell if they're mines or tin cans. Fun-Fact: All Pressure activated mines explode the moment you step on them. Its actually a simple process. Once someone or something puts enough pressure or weight onto the mine, it triggeres the mechanism and that triggers the explosive. Mines that only activate once stepped on, and then explode when pressure releases makes no sense and would be complicated to make.

@jamesbednar86252 жыл бұрын
WOW!! Not another "stepped on a land mine; hear a "click"; and do not move" movie. As a former Combat Engineer for 20 years that delt with land mines all the time, this movie just .... Since the area in question was most likely scattered with CONVENTIONAL land mines, this sniper team should have been more aware of their immediate surroundings. At NO time in my 20 years in military handling/training/disarming land mines or placing/removing mine fields did we ever train for this type of scenario!!! NEVER ever happened!!! You stepped on a land mine - BOOM - see ya, don't want to be ya!!! You have a better chance of surviving this scenario IF you stepped on an ANTI-TANK mine, but definitely NOT an ANTI-PERSONNEL mine. Before they deployed to whatever country they were in, this sniper team would have received training on the types of threats to be expected - especially land mines AND mine field MARKINGS. NOT all mine fields are going to be marked properly, but these guys had some type of divine intervention when that mine marking sign landed at their feet. Looks like this area most likely had conventional ANTI-PERSONNEL land mines (the types you step on and go BOOM almost IMMEDIATELY) or ANTI-TANK land mines (vehicles drive over and go BOOM). True - there are some types of anti-personnel mines that have a certain amount of delay like a BOUNDING mine which will bound into the air a certain distance after someone steps on it or triggers a trip wire. The bounding mine will usually go roughly hip-high then explode, thus sending thousands of tiny beads about the size of BBs 360* and killing/maiming anyone/thing in its kill zone. Also, BOOBY TRAPS and/or ANTI-HANDLING DEVICES can be placed on any land mine thus giving a few extra seconds before activation IF disturbed. Anti-tank mines need a certain amount of WEIGHT on them in order to activate, usually the WEIGHT of a wheeled vehicle or tank. Now, some anti-tank mines can be activated by the use of a TILT ROD - a fiberglass rod that is screwed into the top of the anti-tank mine's fuse that will activate the mine IF it is tilted a certain number of degrees, thus killing a vehicle without that vehicle actually running over said mine. Now that tilt rod can also be tilted in high winds, thus exploding the mine without killing anything - one of the primary reasons why US military got rid of them in 1980s. Also, anti-tank mines can have a pneumatic hose screwed into the fuse and stretched out a few feet thus increasing the likely hood that a vehicle will run over that hose; forcing air into the fuse well; and activating the mine. US military had gotten away for those as well way back in the 1980s. Soviet style mines had the same capabilities. Now since this sniper stepped on a mine, heard a "click" (which he was lucky to survive without soiling himself), and the mine did NOT automatically explode, chances were that he stepped on an anti-tank mine OR a defective mine of any sort. Seems that the area that he was in had Soviet style land mines AND those mines were most likely in place for a very long time. I was stationed in South Korea in early 1990s and we were told that there are land mines of all sorts still in place along the North/South border since the 1950s!! Most likely true which would mean that ain't nobody going to remove those mines for they would have become way too unstable (they may explode; they may not explode; or they may sort of explode meaning that the explosive charge could be too far deteriorated to do what it is supposed to do properly). Anyway, since the land mine did not explode after the sniper stepped on it, I think that he did the correct thing by kneeling down to determine type of land mine he stepped on. IF he discovered that it was an anti-tank mine, he most likely could have just taken his foot off it (anti-tank mines need a certain amount of weight/pressure in order for them to activate). If it was discovered to have been an anti-personnel mine, he could have deduced that it was most likely a dud (something that should have been taught to him before his deployment and re-inforced throughout time in country) and gone about his business. HOWEVER, since those land mines were most likely in place for quite a few years and most likely have become unstable, he probably did the right thing by staying in place for a few hours. Now for the rest of the movie...well makes good DRAMA for a movie. Again, 20 years in military handling this stuff and NEVER trained for nor heard about this scenario. EVERYTHING that I typed was what I experienced from 1981-2001, so DO NOT KNOW how modern military trains for a scenario like this - maybe they do, maybe they do not, but yeah, does make for a good movie. You will see a scenario similar like this in the movie "Kelly's Heroes" & "The Boys in Company C", and a few other movies.
@Rncko2 жыл бұрын
Not sure but isn't there a type of hand held grenade where if you do not let loose and let air in, the final mechanism wouldn't trigger and explode. These movies kinda just make people think that these landmines are basically re-purposed handheld grenades. Based on your experience with mines, is it logical to re-purpose hand held grenade into mines or its just str8 up easier and cheaper to just make a mine. (I think the closest I ever seen in a movie is people repurpose grenade+shotgun pellets into claymore)

These are marines, not soldiers, and it's realky up to a commander's discretion to teach marines how to deal with and survive ied landmines. Its mostly the job of EOD marines to deal with ied's though. These marines mission and thus their briefing was related to taking out their target. I doubt the commander anticipated the mission going sideways because of scope glare. Pressure Release Mines are unrealistic but would be a great halting tool to evacuate your own platoon. Imagine a scenario where an order was given for an army to abandon an outpost while an enemy platoon is rapidly surrounding it. If they used pressure release instead of instant. They would basically make an inegotiable hostage situation. Their only choice is to sacrifice their comrade to proceed with the mission or to bring in a bomb defusal expert to try to save the single soldier and giving your army more time to get away. It would be an amazing insurgent tool
@UnknownGamer40464 Жыл бұрын

@@UnknownGamer40464 what about an entire tank platoon? You can't just leave one behind and expect the rest to go through in cramped city streets. Pressure release mines also make it harder for modern mine sweeping vehicles to clear out since it will only be released of pressure under the vehicle. Maybe it won't completely destroy the internals due to the armor but if enough explode under there, it should increase the risk of a malfunction.

When his friend's body ended up next to him, he could shift his friends body over and around his foot. Then taken off his shoe. Since we know just his leg is enough weight, a whole torso on a shoe should be enough to offset it. Great video but one thing! Towards the beginning you state that due to types of mines and the odds that he will die the soldier should’ve stepped off of the mine and ran to get his gear. I disagree because the soldier just saw his friend step off and the mine explode, so the odds that the mines are different types that close to each other are low, therefore he probably shouldn’t have walked off of the mine

I really enjoyed the video, great job as always, though from a technical standpoint... it feels like the audio is around 10-15 seconds behind the visuals later on in the video? Take 15:26 for instance, you're talking about him shooting to scare off the wild dogs while the footage for that is shown at 15:16 (that's one of the clearer examples, but it is everywhere). Again, it was a great video regardless and it doesn't really take away much, but I wondered whether something got messed up during editing. Cheers!
