The Budapest Gambit is a tough opening to deal with as a d4 player. It's always uncomfortable, it puts you on a defensive, and beating it isn't easy despite the engine saying white is easily better.
In this game I found a novelty and managed to get an extremely dangerous attack against my opponent's king while keeping mine completely safe.

4. e3 Nxe5 5. f4 forcing black’s knight to an undesirable square is a similar line that is dangerous for black. The recommended engine idea is Ne2-Ng3 like in this game. White attempts to get big center and central bind with a later e4. It does take some care because of the backwards e3 weakness

I've always thougt the budapest is a bit of a cheap trick. Personally, I like the agressive 4.e4! but your setup is also very good!

Petrosian played 4.e4 in his second game ever recorded against Flohrs, where he crushed Flohrs at the age of 13/14 (Flohrs never normally played the Busapest and was also playing a simul).

I’ve tried most setups against the Budapest and agree 4.e4 is most trying move, but you do have to know a decent amount of theory to not have your position collapse after 5. f4 Nec6. The Ng6 lines are utter trash that can be refuted quickly. If you aren’t over 2k fide, the simple system of 4.Bf4, oftentimes giving back the pawn and winning either the bishop pair or structure leads to a pleasant advantage with almost zero downside, but probably is less trying, just a positionally preferable position.

I think the setup with 4.e4 followed by f4 would suit you, White give back the pawn but gets a pleasant space advantage

Like other comments here, I'm convinced that 4. e4 is the closest thing that exists to a refutation of the Budapest. Just give the pawn back, get a huge pawn center and development advantage, and leave Black wondering why they ever bothered playing this opening :)

Sweet. You found a new playable line.

7.a3 is not a strategic mistake like you mentioned. After 7...a5 you can play 8.Ne4. After 8...Ba7 there is no rook lift and you can play b4. After 8...Be7 you can play Qd5 and Bd2 to c3 after.

I like it when mediocre (at best) gambits get punished

That’s not a mediocre gambit, that’s barely even a gambit. Like all openings it can be poorly played though

It really isnt a mediocre gambit. Its so viable even at the top. You just need to know theory as black

@@hata6290yes it is bad unless somehow you like playing so passively with black. For gambit players usually not fun. But like others said, this is barely a gambit and the lines are very easy to learn. So just embrace the passivity and you are good to go.

@@hata6290I mean what the hell is black going to do? I see no pawn breaks or weakness to attack. Minority attack on the kingside? Hell no. Not with the king there. You kinda just sit there and say: Do your worst! I was born to suffer.

Nice game 🫡 You got a good attack going when black shut down his pieces with b6 and the Knight couldn't easily be improved.
