Upon discovering the child, cut her loose, cut their tires and drive back to town. They should not be fully snowed down by then. Ideally, she'd use her skills to hotwire the van and take it instead. She could also leave the girl alone, never enter the car, go around to all the other cars, to cover her tracks, then drive towards town with the info, sending a text or calling as soon as she gets service. After returning from the van the first time (hopefully having asked for info), then she should inform the couple and listen to your other advice.

@DisealBitches I mean, I'd rather be shot or something by greasy haired Lars then knowingly allow a child to be abducted. at the very least, taking a picture of the license plate, recording a child being tied up in the back, or at least the sound of her screaming if possible, and getting some police on the phone, even if they can't come out immediately, would be the best decision that doesn't include direct action.

Here's a possible solution I thought of: When she first discovered the girl in the van, she could have gotten into her car and driven up the road the way she was originally going and try to find the state trooper or cop or whatever he was from earlier. If he was redirecting traffic, he should still have been there and would have had a radio and called it in. Cops from the previous town could have been there within a relatively short amount of time

It’s not that simple. Even fully trained soldiers have a lot of trouble shooting enemies in combat, which is why covering fire and depersonalization of the enemy is heavily focused on during training. There was even a study which found that around 90% of soldiers will purposefully shoot over their target’s head. It’s just a fact that most people lack the constitution for killing even when their lives are at risk. Anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or a sociopath. I consider that hesitation pretty realistic in most cases, because only experienced killers wouldn’t hesitate and most horror movie protagonists are people that probably haven’t even picked up a power tool before, let alone a firearm.

Modern nail guns have a safety mechanism at the end where the nail comes out. You have to have pressure on the nose and be pulling the trigger at the same time to launch a nail. If they taped it down with a crap ton of duct tape, it might work. Most also require being attached to air compressors unless it’s battery operated, but batteries only last a few hours at best if fully charged.
