I think I'd have tested the demon's reality a bit. Obviously if someone else saw the domino (and it looked like a three-pronged fork) and that matched what I saw that would help, especially if someone said it had two-prongs after the first killing. Since we can't trust anything we know (the demon could be a hallucination), I would have someone else write a number or phrase where I couldn't see it or know and if Gaap was able to tell us, and it was true... time to at least consider hopping on the murder train.
@RepChris11 ай бұрын
There is the issue that if this an elaborate hallucination, we could also be hallucinating whatever responses we get, and whatever response we give. The same also goes if the demon is manipulating reality/our perception of it. But yeah at least some sort of outside verification of the abilities/existence of the demon would be a good idea before going ham

@RepChris6 ай бұрын
@@metanightmare4454 Yeah our inability to be completly sure of our perceptions being reality (or some reflection thereof) has been generally accepted (or at least thought about) by philosophers for millennia. Both western and eastern philosophy came up with the "dream argument", sometimes called the "Zhuangzi paradox", after the book Zhuangzi in turn named for its author Zhuang Zhou, a philosopher who was very influential in the founding of taoism. The allegory of the gave also is a pretty good example, while it isnt purely about the radical skepticism, it does lay groundwork. More recently in western philosophy Descartes first (afaik) proposed the "evil demon" problem, which is pretty much what were saying, in short we cant know that our perception isnt being manipulated (possibly in totality) by a malicious entity, and thus we cant know for sure anything we perceive is real, thus the only thing we can know is our own existence (cogito/dubito ergo sum). A more modern interpretation of the evil demon is the brain in a vat/matrix. Of course your own insanity isnt going to be as perfectly coordinated as a evil demon or a super computer, so in real life you can usually find discrepancies with your hallucinations allowing you to deduce they aren't real, but that isnt guaranteed to be possible, and of course you being instance usually doesnt help your ability to detect discrepancies. delusions (inability to adjust your belief(s) in conflict with evidence) is after all a common symptom in psychosis along with hallucinations.

One way you could assess the demon being real is ask it something we dont know that helps us kill like “what could I use to make a non detectable poison i can go and buy right now” when he tells us and it works we at least have a better method to get away with it and know the demon must be really something that exists regardless of its origin, plus I would show ask the demon what happend to the domino after kills, then someone the domino before and after to see if they see it change, these are all quick things we can do, hell take a sick day from work to do this then just poison people at the pub!

Yah, trusting demons isn't quite wise. Demons are going to deceive you and lie and never have good intentions. A good way to understand demons is by looking at Orthodox Demonology and having a correct view of Orthodox theology. Also wouldn't demons existing kind of prove another religion is real? And in basically every religion demons are EVIL and will ALWAYS LIE. Never makes sense to trust one, especially when you consider what happens to your eternal soul.

Wouldn’t demons existing prove another religion is real? Nope. While it’s impossible for every religion to be right, it’s completely possible that every religion is wrong. We don’t know that there’s any hard coded permanent set of rules here. If anything, it seems like Gaap was just dealing with his bosses at his 9 to 5. Also, why wouldn’t you expect a demon to telling the truth when the truth benefits him? You’re saying that a demon would be so committed to lying that he would screw himself unnecessarily. “A good way to understand demons is look at Orthodox Demonology” - Dude, none of its real.
@nighthero711 ай бұрын
@@jaycol21 Considering the year was 79' & the internet wasn't around, getting info would have been difficult. It's really a 50-50. If Gaap was a evil spirit of the land, then Christian god isn't real. Conversely if Gaap was a Christian demon, then god is. It's just a matter of figuring out which one he belongs to & what Nadi's religious view is. Depending on that: The 'correct choice' is to kill or not kill. Gaap has no reason to tell the truth because for all we know, he's lying about the punishment. Yes, it is a bit of unnecessary doubt, since you do need to start somewhere to trust him to do the deed; however, we can only take his word for it & that assuming that his boss isn't lying about what the punishment is/does. So: How well do you trust a stranger telling you what another stranger said in private? Especially when the former stranger is telling you to kill people.
@jaycol2111 ай бұрын
@@nighthero7 That assumes that the Christian religion (or some other religion) has correctly identified WHAT Gaap is. Even then, being right about a single thing doesn’t mean that your entire belief system is correct…or even most of it. Let’s say Gaap just flat out says “I’m a Christian demon”. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist demons. Your line of logic isn’t why you shouldn’t trust demons. It’s why you shouldn’t trust literally ANYONE. Also Gaap was honest throughout the entire story, remember?
