Don't even listen to anyone who's giving you shit for posting this. It basically just saved me. I have horrible anxiety and have trouble being in situations where I feel trapped or like I can't leave (like a hair salon). I used to go to a family friend who would cut it at her house but she moved so I've just had my mom trim it whenever it got too long.. For the first time in 5 years I look like I went to a salon to get my hair styled and it makes me feel so much better about myself.. I love it every time I look in the mirror

I cut my hair all the time, but never tried pulling it forward. I pull it back, but then I end up with a curved bottom instead of straight. I would have loved to seen what your hair looked like brushed down in the back when you were done, so I could compare.

I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I think the ONLY thing I noticed that I would suggest correcting is the scissors. I know professional scissors are expensive, but there is a reason why we don’t use household scissors to cut hair in salons. Process scissors also have a specific weight and balance to them that helps them to cut through even thick and coarse hair like a razor blade and quickly. When you’re trying to get even, shag type layers and to do an inverted cut on the ends, the sharper the scissors the better. I would recommend going to Sally’s or a beauty shop other than Wal-Mart and shelling out the money for quality scissors. You’ll get great results and lose less length in correction cuts over all. Otherwise you rocked it girl!!!

I agree better sissors. And she said she did it over with different sissors. I bought mine at Sally's they were originally $60 but clearance to $20 and I've used them for 5 years. Have cut my own hair for years now. I don't do it this way because I don't want as many layers so I do a different method that works our basically the same but doesn't have all those layers in back. I like it only on my sides and front with very very long layers in back.

I've been cutting my hair for years (I cut my hair too often to go to a salon and I like to do things myself) and it's always been so abrupt and blunt and layer-less. This video helped me learn how to have my hair be like all the other pretty girls at my school. I'm disabled so I have very low self-esteem as it is and I never really felt pretty. About a month ago I watched this and did what you did and I love it! I feel more confident at school and I'm actually excited for school cause I feel like I fit in more. I am a hairdresser and it is self explanatory. Cutting hair is about angles and how u project the hair from the head when u cut it. If u pull ur hair all the way up and cut it, sure it is gonna create layers. Since the hair closest to where u pull will become shorter due to the distance from the scalp and to the level of where y hold ur hand when u cut. The furter away, the longer the hair will be. Love it:)

Oh my goodness, THANKS. I haven't been able to afford a haircut in years. Well- I mean, I could, but it feels like a waste of money to me, since I am lower end of the income scale. I never get anything fancy done, but it's always still $30+, unless I want them to mangle my head at supercuts. And they ALWAYS do. This is perfect, just did it in about 20 minutes. I actually put in a few more layers, just remember that the innermost side of the upside down pony tail need to be the shortest. Since my hair has a wave to it, never lays perfectly flat, I didn't have to snip the tip too much. It looks great!

Hello all! I do receive a lot of repeat questions on this video, I'll try to answer some of the same questions I get, right here for you… 1. Yes this really works (please read the comments below of others that raved about it) 2. Does this leave your hair in a "V" shape in the back? No, not if you cut it straight across as I show, it won't. 3. Will this cut give me layers? Yes, it will give you layers. 4. If you don't want layers, how can I cut my hair straight across? I don't know, I cut my hair this way and LOVE it! 5. Yes, you do hear water in the background. We have a water feature in the room where I film, I've learned to turn it off in future videos:) 6. My blush… I know it's a bit on the heavy side. I'm a make-up artist and I just finished shooting a video on a make-up haul I did. I test all the new makeup colors I purchase prior to using them on clients and that's exactly what I was doing and why it's dark. Testing. Check out the video:) 7. Does this cut work on a side part? M by Mickie You don't need to explain yourself to anyone. I'm a broke college kid just like you said and I use this tip here and there. My dad's girlfriend is a hairdresser and she touches up my hair every six months or so when I visit, but in between, I can't afford $35 at the salon every month. I used to have unhealthy ends because I would let it go until I could get to a hair dresser 3 months later. This has made my hair healthier. If they can't understand that not everyone has time to go to a hair stylist, they probably need a reality check and need to realize some people don't have a lot of money for extra luxuries.

Years ago I first watched this video and had doubts, and my doubts increased as I studied cosmetology in high school and learned proper hair cutting techniques. A year ago from yesterday after almost a year out of high school and not being able to afford a salon visit, I decided to turn back to this video. This was already a big step for me because scissors had not touched my hair since the 8th grade and it was long enough to sit on by this point. April 2018 I felt spontaneous and wanted to change my appearance for once, so I whipped out my shears and a pair of scissors and pulled up this video. The first round of haircutting I did on myself was a little too drastic in difference in length front-to-back, but I went for it again a few days later and ended up LOVING the result. My hair ended up being just past my shoulders, but it felt really short to me and I was obsessed. I loved the new look and the ends of my hair were nice and even, and a year a day later today I plan to cut it very soon. Thank you so much Mickie, you're a life saver

you can mix a little bit of coconut oil and a little bit of Moroccan argon oil and brush you hair twice a day while adding the mix of oils to it, it strengthens your hair and also gives it the silk like appearance

Also don't wash so often because you are losing all that great natural oil that makes your hair healthy naturally you can go up to a month without washing depending on your hair type and the products you use I know it may sound insane to you but do some research on it

I've cut my own hair this way since I came across another video similar to this one. I love the way it turns out every time. I also cut the length when it gets too long. I found another video that shows you how to cut the length yourself. It comes out almost perfect with the exception of a few stands.

I just tried this and it worked perfectly! I have thin, long hair and took off 2 inches. the back remained pretty much straight across how it was before (which i did not expect!) and the layers are a nice touch. Hi! Your video brought back memories. I am now 70 yrs old. In the late sixties 3 of us in residence decided to do this. It was the Farrah Fawcett cut (a beautiful model and actress in her day.). We cut it much shorter-about a couple inches past the elastic. It came out perfectly.

I’m a licensed barber with technique training from many established industry greats. You did a great job. As another commenter mentioned, using even inexpensive shears meant for cutting hair would make this even better. And your hair is in great condition. I would suggest a soft balayage to blend your line of demarcation from the line at your mid length and delicately into your cold shaft. Brushing a cool toner through some of you blonde color on the lower half would soften some of the warmth on your lighter hair and really brighten your style. Keep up the great work! It is nice to see someone offering tips for a tight budget responsibly. When trying this cutting technique, I would add that less is more and one can always go back to take a little more off, but you can’t put it back on so use care and err on the side of less hair off the first time around. 😊

I've been cutting my own hair this way for more than 20 years. Started doing it after guessing it might work. And it did. It's an excellent way to cut off split ends too. :)

BendyBus Song I've never gotten my hair done, my mom always always alwayssss cut my hair growing up, I didn't even know other people exclusively went to a shop to get there hair cut until I was like 14!! I think being able to cut your hair (the basics anyway) is necessary!!

I am married to a hairdresser and my son is a barber... however, they do moan when I ask for a trim! LOL. Hey, I do exactly what you do! The only thing I would STRESS is to get some decent scissors (and be careful not to snip fingers when chopping in - they are sharp). You have done a fabulous demo for long, layered hair xx

I was tired of my very long hair and putting it up everyday for my job. I decided after discovering your video, I went and bought some 20-dollar hair shears. And I gathered the courage to do this! And I actually absolutely LOVE this cut! I now have layers and love the Jennifer Aniston late 90's look I created!! I have received lots of complements being able to wear some of my hair down at work so I appear softer to folks as opposed to tight hair! It's sooo me! Thank You soooooo MUCH Mickey!!

Mickie, you are a lifesaver!! I haven't had my hair cut in 3 years because nobody in the town where I live seems to understand what I'm asking for.. After too many disappointments I gave up. Today, out of desperation, I decided to try it myself.. I watched both this video and part 2 and just went for it.. Followed you step by step..
