well said dude, the principals in this guide are already ingrained in the way my crew plays but new players get too caught up in feeling cool than remaining objective and that'll throw their game a lot of the time time, it's a bit harder in a 1v1 if you're fighting an evenly matched game because the other dude will be 100% just sending pressure right back at u the whole time and every time you manage to get into a capital position. Excellent break down man, ton's of people would benefit from this, last 2 weeks of play have been absolutely wild, we're used to being the clean up crew up crew, the last 20 fight's have been close to 50/50 because everyone's getting really good because of the content like this, game's getting better because of it!

I'm pretty new to the game, and only had one boarding experience I'll explain later. This guide however has given me a whole new perspective on boarding that no streamers or other youtubers have given me. It's distraction, misdirection. You don't even need to fight them in order to be an effective boarder! I used to be a magician so the misdirection aspect to this resonates with me a lot, and gives me such a better idea of how to board than what I see streamers doing most of the time. Thank you for this guide. My only boarding attempt as of this comment, We were doing a phantom fleet on a sloop and were pretty new to the game, another sloop shot at us during the mission (Rude!), so I went for a board when they were following behind us, my second person had helm and we weren't damaged so I figured it's fine, let's give it a go, also I kinda wanted to retaliate, get a bit of revenge for their act of aggression. I got the board, killed the one of the wheel, had a fight with the second one, and managed to beat him! I had planned to try to camp them and make them sink, but after 20 or so seconds my second person said hey, we got hit by the phantoms I need help. So I hesitated a moment, but bailed, got back on my own ship. Turns out, I made the right call, they still sunk, and we kept our ship alive, and completed the voyage. I went for kills, not distraction, which worked in this case since it was another new crew and I got the drop on them, but had I died? We likely would have sunk. Also had a reaper galleon chase me as I was solo slooping, they kept trying to board me like crazy, and the few times they managed to grab my ladder, they just came up, 3 hit cutlass combo them off the side. They clearly didn't see this guide. With the idea of not going for kills but distraction and misdirection? That changes how I view boarding entirely, so thank you.

This was really well made man. I thoroughly appreciated the detailed distraction methods, and really liked the "Ask yourself why you're boarding?". Anyone looking to get into pvp/hone their skills could definitely learn some good things. Something that made a remark on me was the ladder guarded board dilemma. You provided an excellent clip as example showing how your patience paid off, and I really think that's something I have been neglecting, and just stressing getting on a little too quickly. I suppose that's also why it's nice knowing if you have a dependable cannon shooter keeping up the pressure, so the one ladder guard doesn't become a quad ladderguard after they finish repairing haha. I solo sloop a lot and I've taken on gally crews by myself and if you can be unpredictable you can win. Always carry blunder bombs when going in a fight because if you are solo slooping or even in a crew 1 well placed blunder bomb can knock both boarders off. The better you get at attacking or boarding or whatever the better you will be at defending against it. Great vid and safe sails!

When to naval is very simple. If they're good enough to kill you on the ladder before you have a chance at getting on their ship, then you have to 1ball them or give them enough holes that they can't send resources to defend the ladder.

I also have “discovered” a strategy I’ve seen no one else use. If you board with a cutlass equipped, you can immediately sword hop towards their ladder, not only can this dodge their attacks if they know you’re boarding, but you practically teleport onto their crows nest’s ladder. This is a huge advantage since they’ll be distracted looking for you, and usually won’t think to look up, then, you can drop down when their guard is down and get a free kill. Alternatively, you can convince them you fell off and then just tuck.

We used to win some battles just because of a friend who boarded regularly and stole their supplies because we ran out multiple times. At the end both sides ran out and we just lit their ship on fire and since they just...didnt respawn we finally won

Tip: Before boarding if you have a cutlass hold block and then ladder, it allows you to do a swift jump as soon as you get up top allowing you to get past even people guarding ladders

I found a pretty good strategy that usually works Im not a pvp guy so it works only when Im being chased. So when I am chased I jump off and swim towards them (for some reason they hardly ever notice the merefolk) I stick to their ladder and hide under their deck. If I find a keg I just use it. Then I suddenly do all the chaos: dropping anchor burning the ship killing them and all that kind of distraction. Then they're so focused on killing me putting the fire down etc. That they don't even notice that my friend turned back with ready cannons. Then just let him make couple holes, keep the distraction going and you're good to go. Works suprisingly well especially that Im not really good at pvp

@@kaijoi8938 For a number of different reasons - it's always best practice to have it on when streaming or recording others. Especially randoms you haven't asked permission to record. Protects anonymity of other crews, avoids unnecessary sniping or messaging from viewers etc.. You'd be surprised the kind of stuff random people will do and lengths they'll go to trying to troll. In any case it's super easy to turn the setting on - and you can always bind a hotkey if you want to check gamertags quickly etc too.

Boarding is not an effective all win strategy. Naval however is, if you get good at naval you can one-ball, put massive pressure and land curses, chains, firebombs and blunderbombs effectively. I've sunk a good few crews with sole naval superiority. If you feel like you just put a sizeable amount of pressure on the enemy and neither ship is in cannon range then you can go board in order to over-pressure them and secure a sink without risking needing to get your ship positioned effectively and the enemy having already stifled most of the pressure by then.

Absolutely. I mainly helm, so if the other crew is not very good I almost always just send one of my guys out to go sail their ship into a rock. Rather than having to waste cannonballs and chainshots on their boat, just easier to do a dry fight. The main point I was trying to get across is if you're ONLY way to sink someone is to have a guy 1v4, then that won't always work against a good crew.

Landing at the tip of the boat is probably the worst thing you can do. This game is super laggy and ping based, so landing towards the middle of the ship so that you have the most room to land will help you in getting deck lands more often. Decklanding the tip of the boat doesn’t “snap you to it” or anything like that. More consistent to land in the middle of the boat.

One trick that's useful is to watch your surroundings in the sea. If there's a fort or sea fort nearby, you can fake a retreat and, while passing by, use the cannons on it to make a surprise board.

Love all the tips, but my problem with boarding is simply getting to the ladder. Whenever I fight on land, or actually do manage to get on the ladder I do extremely well, but I struggle a lot with cannons and predicting where I'll land. I don't get much practice either, because as a solo player, leaving your ship too much is a big risk

Go to the Sea of Thieves official discord server. You can find a lot of decent crews that want to PvP. It's better than open crew or playing solo, that's what I do.

I guess they removed the ability to knock players off the ladder with the sword ? That's how i used to defend against boarders back when i was very active in the game but that was a while ago.

Holding the ladder by constantly spamming with the sword is an easy and effective way to kill inexperienced players. But if you fight someone who is an expert at boarding, then you’ll either get 2 tapped, or 1 blundered and you’ll die. They could also just moonwalk up the ladder since you’re not doing any damage to them. Long story short, holding the ladder with a sword against an experienced player is a bad idea. Hold it with a blunderbuss instead.

Most of the time when people tried to board me , my boat was moving so if i could hit them as they're climbing up, before they reach the top, it would knock them off the ladder. I used to do that all the time in arena and also in adventure mode. Once they're knocked if the boat is moving they can't catch the ladder again so my question is about preventing a boarding, not about killing a player.

The sword does still knock someone off the ladder. In my video I did say: *”now for the sword, pistol, and sniper, you can just bum rush them.”* This is not entirely true for the sword. With the sword, if someone is just hard guarding and constantly swinging with the sword, you can either wait for the boat to tilt then walk up the ladder on a galleon and run back behind the balcony. Or you can go to the very top of the ladder, then right before you go into the animation of climbing onto the boat, quickly drop down and 1 blunder them. If the sword user is just spamming the ladder and spamming m1, you could also just time your climb so that you make it on the boat just as they’re swinging, allowing you to make it on deck and not get hit off the ladder. After that, it’s just a matter of you hitting a blunderbuss shot to either 1 blunder them or at least knock them far enough away to allow yourself time to run and heal. As for your question: *yes, the sword does knock someone off the ladder* But there are ways to easily outmaneuver this if the sword user is just sitting at the top of the ladder waiting for you to come to them, and they aren’t using their guns to shoot you.

You can go to the Xbox Console Companion, go to their profile and click the ACHIEVEMENTS option. It will compare your stats to them and it will tell you the amount of days they've played. (If they have a private profile then it won't work.)
