Editor’s Note: At 4:25, the video mentions Standard Oil and American Tobacco as examples for commodity monopolies that kept prices high. In reality, Standard Oil maintained its monopoly by artificially keeping price low to stifle out competition.

Successful monopolies either come up with something entirely new or make an existing product accessible to the masses to the extent that it seems like something new. The company that monopolizes the flying car may not build the first one. They will build the first affordable mass produced flying vehicle.

You could also mention that there's also space in the market for both you and your competitors. Business doesn't have to be a winner-take-all game.

That's it, I'm sold. Two videos in and I'm a subscriber. I especially loved the shoutout to Mitch Hedberg with the "3 easy and 2 hard payments" part (if indeed that's what that was. In any case, it was funny). Though, I wonder how many monopolies were paid out in wampum...

Ironically, the law which is supposed to break up monopolies, in practice, actually creates them. Companies lobby the government to selectively use the law against their competitors, to make THEMSELVES the monopoly. So, it's a stupid law, and they should get rid of it. It only contributes to crony-capitalism. We should let natural monopolies stand, after all, wanting to achieve a monopoly is what motivates entrepreneurs to innovate/invest in the first place.

Sword Monopolies are nature in the primitive notion of scarcity. However, they are modern day feudalism and in the long run destroy innovation and stifle the economy. Historically they kill competition through the use of monetary oppression since money is excluded from constitutional law. On top of all that, government isn't a magical mysterious force it is made of people. So if good people get in good things happen same with bad. Corporation attempted to subvert during the gilded age and roaring 20s and successfully did so during the 70s. History is just that history good or bad only authoritarian supports attempt to revise it and attempt to clean it up...communists and capitalists alike do it.

Lobbies are a cancer that needs to be cut out before anything can be achieved. In all honesty the government needs a rework where businesses are more comparable to prey to regulators so there's a motivation to actually watch what they're doing AND as many punishments as possible to said regulators for NOT treating the businesses as prey.

Hmm........ didn't this video just say about Ameircans fetishizing competition? Looks like It was right. In all honesty if a monopoly does what it's supposed to in thaty it has to be THE one to provide for as much needs as possible then it would take innnovation, brand it, and sell it to you for a price. That way there is innovation, the monopoly makes money, and the consumer get's a product.
