I've always wanted to be a biologist, but I kinda gave up on it after dropping out of highschool. I recently decided to pursue it again, and your video has been very helpful! If you're like me and your animal is super super niche, try expanding it's wikipedia article! It's a good motivation and focus to finding studies on your animal, and you can feel like you're actually doing something.

Thank you AVNJ, I’ve been stuck in a rut lately, not doing too well getting jobs, and the job search is like pulling teeth. It’s always been a dream for me to work with animals, but as much as I’d to dream about being like Steve Irwin, life has been kicking me down a bit and I feel as if I’m being a bit too ambitious. However, this video has given me a bit of hope, as it gives instruction of what I could do while I try to get a job to support myself, I’m still a little unsure what niche I’ll choose but I think it’ll be something on birds. But I have to thank you AVNJ, life is a little easier now that I can take proper steps to reach my goals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

unrelated but I appreciate that the States have so many freshwater fish. In the uk I could probably find every freshwater fish species in the uk in the course of less than 6 months if I put much effort into it. There are a little over 40 freshwater fish species in the uk and i've photographed 9 this year ( stone loach, rudd, roach,bleak,chub, perch, sticklebacks, Phoxinus minnows and bullhead sculpins) just by dipnetting in my small town and a couple others which I haven't photographed ( atlantic salmon, gudgeon, dace and pike).

We need more biologists and researchers and specialists in fields in companies in relevant sompanies. In my country, a lot of biology majors just use it as their premed. Regarding that academia part, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend going into academia only of you're interested. It's a combination of a lot of pressure to publish and students who will will watch youtube videos and think you did nothing. Personally, I hate research since I know plenty of people who allegedly fake their results and still manage to get published.

I don’t often comment on videos but as a 32 year old marine ichthyologist that started very late into the game because when I was younger I was discouraged from going into biology by adults I looked up to, I have to say this video has some excellent information. The jobs in biology are often competitive but they are there! Become the expert as he says and then you’ll find the opportunities. 100% love the information here. I wish this had existed when I was in high school. I would be so much further along with this advice.

I'm currently in uni studying general biology. My goal is to become a forensic scientist, but I can keep options like immunology or marine biology open in case the forensics path fails. I've had this plan for ages now and I'm quite happy with my choice although studying broad biology can be really hard when I'm only interested in a select few subjects and topics. Though, I can say it is enjoyable so far!

Would you say it’s probably a good idea to get like, an associates or bachelors or just the bare minimum academics in college for something outside of the Academia field? I had to swap majors from engineering to biology because I started realizing how little I liked the actual studies of engineering, so I’m just wondering if you think it would be good to get a bachelors in biology or if an associates is usually enough to get a biologist job.
@AVNJ
@AVNJ 10 ай бұрын
Typically the jobs I see in my area (entry level) will want a bachelors. They're often willing to help you get your masters while you work there as well. I don't know many biologists who got a private or government job with only an associates, but if you're truly the expert on the organism, I don't doubt its possible

What about jobs for someone who has spent most of their personal time doing a lot of those things (learning about certain species, genus, caring for them, observing various other things about them, etc) but doesn’t have a degree from college to get into those jobs that require them? Getting into college has been very important to me though there have been many problems that make it very difficult so in the mean time I’ve been trying to look into opportunities that don’t require a degree. Highly doubt I’m going to get into something that’s gonna be like studying nature and different species or anything but nothing anywhere close in the vicinity seem to be available. It’s either directly working with nature and studying species which requires a degree or your typical jobs that don’t require anything like Walmart type jobs. Not that there’s anything wrong with those types of jobs, it’s just that I’m trying to find out if there’s some kind of niche job that I’m not seeing that fits someone like me who’s knowledgeable on certain genus and species of different types of things and can learn lots about others but doesn’t have a college degree to work in the biology, environmental, etc fields yet. So I’m looking for jobs that I could be specifically searching for that wouldn’t require a degree currently so I can at least enjoy having a job somewhat relating to nature while I work on maybe getting into college to then pursue something that requires a degree if I’m able to get accepted into college and afford it.

Im intrested by ophidia(snakes),cnidaria and fossils,these all are my passions. But since I live in Poland,the only one that I can make a good living from and study,are cnidiarians by becoming a marine biologist. The only way to work with snakes is to be an exotic "animal doctor",and I dont really like that the whole job is looking at injured animals. Identifying fossils is not a good time,so marine biology is probably my only way. Sadly,I will need to be a general marine biologist,since Poland isn't the best place to be a biologist.
