Hey Bridget! thanks so much for this great video and information on certifying with DONA International. I've been a birth doula trainer with DONA for almost 30 years and agree that they're the best organization to certify with-- for many reasons! I do want to let your followers know that they should wait until after they've attended a DONA-approved workshop to order their certification packet though, since once they order it they have 2 years to submit all of their requirements for certification-- but they will have 4 years to complete their requirements after they attend a workshop (unless they've already ordered their packet.) They do need to have that packet ordered BEFORE attending births they want to have count toward certification though. So best timing is to attend a workshop, then order the packet once they have their first birth client lined up. I hope that helps!

How many clients do you take at one time? I worry about if one mama goes into labor at the same time as another letting one of them down. I am looking into being a doula part-time, just during the summer months as I am going to be a school teacher, but I am wondering how close together I could/ should book them. I became disable some years ago. I been a nurse aide and medical secretary was doing my pre courses for nursing before I stop. I taken a few other health courses. I got in my life dream of songwriting but it's not paying off like I thought for extra cash. Is this a good field even if it's online. I also thought of death doula. I think it all boils down to your knowledge and your vibe. I know it sounds silly but if the mama can feel that this is your passion, you are knowledgeable, compassionate and have a calm, positive demeanor, alot of families will have no problem choosing you to be their doula! I would say that most expecting moms initially do look for someone who has gone through pregnancy and birth themselves so it might be slightly more difficult to get clients but with your degree and DONA certification I think that you would have an amazing, fulfilling career as a doula!

I am in the same situation but I attended a few births and applied the techniques learnt from Bridget and others in KZbin and I think that is enough. I think in person training is important but your presence of mind and practical outlook alongside your passion to help matters the most. Do the online certification and start attending births, rest you will learn on your own.

I would say that it might be more difficult getting clients if you haven’t gone through pregnancy and birth yourself since mamas typically are looking for someone to really empathize with them and understand completely how it feels. I think that it would be great getting a degree or certification like a business degree or a medical assistant certification just to give you more credibility and knowledge and also something to fall back on if you’re getting as many clients as you would like. A lot of expecting families look for doulas that have tons of experience and successful birth stories so obviously when you first start out it’s going to be slightly difficult. Being a post partum doula for a family starting out is also a good route since you can help with infant care, household chores and positive support and useful information when adjusting to a new baby in the house. All that to say, there’s lots of ways to do it and not a lot of ways to do it wrong. If being a doula is your passion you will figure it out and your career will be so rewarding and fulfilling!

Hi Debbie! You can take a DONA approved doula workshop. You don’t have to go for the full certification and the workshops are usually about three days long. They’re lengthy but they teach you almost everything you need and offer great resources. There was a girl in my doula training session who was just doing it to be able to support her sister during her birth, not to become a certified doula. :)

Depends on the family. I would say nowadays most families would prefer it if their doula was vaccinated. Some families don’t care and some families prefer if you aren’t vaccinated. It all depends on the mama! I wouldn’t think it would be majorly difficult for you to find clients if you aren’t vaccinated but it might be a challenge.

Atleast 18. You can start doula certification programs at 16-17 I believe but to actually work with women at hospitals typically you have to be atleast 18.

Of course! Anyone can be a doula, I will be honest and say initially most families would prefer a woman to be their doula but it all depends on the family and how well you “vibe”. I don’t think it would be super challenging to find clients as a male doula since I’ve worked with a couple of male doulas in my career. A lot of non binary people or biological women that prefer he/him pronouns that are expecting have said that they would actually prefer a male doula so that the whole process has a more “masculine” vibe. It all depends on the family!

Women are not “birth people” women are not incubators. Women are amazing and inclusive language is trying to dehumanize mothers and harm women. Only women can give birth, only women can breastfeed, only women can become pregnant and grow a human inside of her body. Inclusive language is fine if specified for the individual person that would prefer not to be called mother or women. We will not change our words to neutralize the power of woman.

Make sure that you're inclusive with your pronouns. Not all people with uteruses identify as women :)) and I loved this video!!! I really want to be a doula in the future

However, you are welcome to use the words you wish once you complete your training. And even then. You are more likely than not going to support those Who call themselves women . 🤘

Women give birth, women grow babies. If someone specifies that they do not want to be called a woman that is fine but this is the power of woman and taking away the word mother for “birth person” is dehumanizing and honestly disgusting. Women are not birth people, women are not incubators. Women are amazing.

You can KEEP that craziness. WOMEN use their UTERUS to push a baby out through their VAGINA and breastfeed with their BREASTS (titties with milk in them) this WOMAN who gave birth to the baby is called a MOTHER. I just want to invite you to use different terminology than exclusively feminine descriptors like, mama and she/her/hers pronouns. While the majority of people giving birth identify as women, there is a substantial amount of trans and gender-nonconforming birth givers that do not identify with the terms you are speaking with and are discouraged from participating in healthy birthing practices because of this. If a doula is working with an individual person that would prefer to not be called mother or woman that is completely okay and doulas will respect that! But one thing we will not do is neutralize the power of women by using “inclusive” language exclusively. Women are powerful. Women give birth, women grow humans inside of their bodies. Women are not “birth givers” women are not incubators. Women give birth and are badasses and women will not be dehumanized and be called birth people. Not everyone can give birth. It is a gift that only biological women can carry out for a reason!
