I learnt the theory, then I started reading research papers to see how statistics methods were applied in real life, then started practicing using python and just applied to as many data jobs as I could. I also didn't find a single online course that answered ALL my questions from beginner to expert, instead different courses were useful in different ways, and I tried to triangulate the insights from all of them into 1 notebook which I still have. Hey Yash, You're not alone. It can be really challenging to learn something as big and expansive as data analytics by your self. This is particularly difficult when you are trying to learn a concept and you have read it over multiple times, looked up different sources and things still just don't make sense. When your on the self-taught path it can feel like you have no one to turn to for help. Be patient with yourself, some days will be hard, but other days will be great and you'll make major break throughs. It does take time and if at first you don't understand a concept or there's a day you feel like you didn't progress - know that happens to the best of us. Feel free to reach out if you are every feeling discouraged or need help figuring out a concept or problem.

Hi Brandon, Thank you for coming up with this video. I have been reading and knowing a little about Data Analytics recently. I have and industry experience of 15 plus years of which 11 were into HR. With the intent of getting more familiar with the details, I even got enrolled into a Google Data Analyst Certification Course by Coursera 3 weeks back. Apart from that I am also watching related videos to keep myself updated on current trends. Would you be able to suggest some books that I can refer to for better results both with respect to the Data and the Tools involved?
@ChartExplorers3 жыл бұрын
Hi @hotchipps2005, I’m glad you are taking the Google Data Analytics Certification. I am currently editing a video on my thoughts on this program, so I did a fair bit of researching and even signed up for the certification myself. It seems like an amazing program (especially considering the price point). I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences as you go throughout the certification and move to the job market (here is my email if you would be willing to share your experiences bradonvalgardson@gmail.com). Good question, this is what I would recommend. Focus on completing the Certificate. But I’m glad you are looking at expanding your skill set beyond just what is taught in the Google Data Analytic Certificate - this will help you stand out from everyone else who complete the certificate. As for books regarding the tools that’s tricky. I use Python for analysis and visualization (I would recommend getting really good at R before trying to learn Python) and I learned SQL from Dataquest (and haven’t read any books with SQL). I do have some book recommendations that are less about the tools and more about how to think like an analyst and avoid common pitfalls of incorrect reasoning. Statistics Done Wrong: The woefully complete Guide by Alex Reinhart Naked Statistics: Stripping the dread from the data by Charles Wheelan The Art of Statistics Learning from Data by David Spiegelhalter How To Lie With Statistics by Darrell Huff These two books are great for learning more about data visualization. Storytelling with Data: A data visualization guide for business professionals by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic Effective Data Visualization: The right chart for the right data by Stephanie Evergreen Before going out and buying these books check out your local library and see if they are available there. I hope this helped!

Hi Shreyas, I would recommend first learning SQL first. Once you have a pretty good grasp of SQL I would spend about a day a week reviewing / practicing SQL while learning Python. Thanks. I think DataCamp is a great platform (I haven't used it much and it has been a couple of years), but I don't think you can go wrong with DataCamp (DC). The biggest pro for DC is they have a ton of content. If you like video explanations this is probably one of the best (for the price) options available. The Google Data Analyst Certificate looks amazing as well (I am actually doing it myself just so I can learn more about it and see if it is really worth it). I'm personally a DataQuest fan. Their content is more limited than DC and they don't have videos, but I find that their quality is more consistent and when I am forced to read through the material I have to pay attention more (that's my learning style though), but it is a little more expensive than DC. But really, all these options are great and you can't really go wrong. Right now I'm learning toward the Google Certificate program being the best in that price range.

Hi ben, that's awesome you are getting some good experience with SQL. If you have access to Excel I would recommend getting to know some of the basics there (maybe spend a month on it - it's pretty intuitive). Excel is used everywhere so it's good to have at least a cursory understanding of it. I would then suggest spending the rest of the time on Python (and or R - I'm biased to Python, but R is another great option). Start looking at data analyst jobs that interest you and see if R or Python shows up more (then go with that route).

Hi Ben, it is possible. That is all some jobs need SQL and some excel. What other experience do you have? Do you have domain knowledge? The thing you have to keep in mind is who you will be competing against in the job market. If you only need to know SQL and excel you better know SQL and excel very well and have some way of demonstrating that you know it. Once you have learned those two tools start applying and keep practicing. So yes, it is possible, but just be aware that there is some stiff competition out there for getting a job. I don't want to discourage you, but know you will have to be patient and really go the extra mile with those skills to get a job.

Hi Judy, finding a job can be difficult and discouraging. When I finally found my job I had applied to about 40 jobs (and I had only heard back from the job I got hired at). One of my good friends applied to almost 100 jobs before he landed his job (and he is now loving it). I write all this not to discourage you, but hopefully highlight that you are not alone if you are struggling. While I cannot guarantee you will get a job it sounds like you have all the right skills. What I would recommend is focusing on one (maybe two) areas and build a couple of really good projects in those areas. Finding projects in those are can be tricky (i.e., where do you find the data!), but can go a long way to helping you land a job. It can alleviate some worries about "not having experience" and when you get interviews give you something tangible to talk about. I review a lot of resumes and portfolios (I'm the career moderator at Data Quest) and the resumes that really stand out to me are those that have some unique projects and use something like GitHub Pages to build a nice portfolio for their projects. So rather than trying to build a portfolio for 6 different domains I would say spend your time making those couple of projects great and displaying them in a professional way. P.S. I'm not Alex (but I'm flattered - Alex is awesome). My name is Bradon and I'm Alex's doppelganger haha. Hi Lepcha Lhakit, good questions. Knowing if data analytics is right for you is tricky to answer. If by this question you are wondering if you are capable ("smart enough") than most likely you are. Which one can I go For data analysis or software development? Please I need guidance
@ChartExplorers3 жыл бұрын
You won’t go wrong with either. The big question to ask is what do you like better, building and creating (software development) or exploring and discovering (data analysis)? I love data, but if I were to start all over from scratch I would get into software development (and by that I men web development - I’m assuming that is what you mean as well). The biggest reason is that with software development you have no barriers (as long as you have a computer and internet connection). With data analysis you have the barrier of needing data. You will always be working for someone else, there are no meaningful side projects (that are easy to get into). But with development you can build whatever you like. Even if you are working for someone else, if you have an idea you can build it and make it happen. With data analysis you can have great ideas, but you need to be able to get the data somehow which often times is unavailable or impractical to get. Those are my two cents.

Absolutely. Before you spend a bunch of time and resources on this be aware that there is a lot of competition for entry level data analytics jobs. A great place to start is the bit.ly/IBM_DS_CERT on coursera. You can pay to get the certification, but when starting off I would recommend auditing each individual course ( for FREE!!). Get a feel data analysis and if you like it and have an aptitude for it. There are some other good Udemy Courses (let me know if you want recommendations) that you can get you started. Once you have a pretty good base start applying for jobs. This is likely going to take a while (it could take more than a year). If you work on good personal projects and set up an awesome portfolio it can really help with the process. In summary, it is possible, it's going to take a lot of work and be really frustrating at time, but you can do it! and it can be very rewarding :) Good luck!

Advice from a current learning analyst: Whatever you learn, PRACTICE IT. Don’t just watch videos and read. Go on kaggle and try out a task on a dataset (no matter how daunting). Just choose the right task to do for you; and, if it’s too hard or you have no idea what to do, GOOGLE or get help from the community or SKIP and move on. You’ll either learn something new or at least get to know what you can possibly learn next (don’t put yourself down because you don’t know either; that’s how you takeaway your motivation and confidence - everyone starts the same way, don’t forget). If you can’t figure it out, the kaggle community will do it for you. All you have to do is study their document and script… think of kaggle as a test, except you get to see the answers after you TRY first. Test yourself over and over. Additional things I’m using: (1) youtube - i made a play list of all the things i think i need to know (i havent watched all of them, and i probably won’t) - i only watch the videos i finally realize i actually need to learn and/or im interested in learning (2) books - i bought a bunch of books on all things related to data analysis (python for data analysis, machine learning, statistics) - i have NOT started most and i haven’t finished ANY of them (i use the books to guide me on what to learn next) - i’m a lazy reader, i take only what i need (the guidelines) from all of the books and piece them altogether in my head - i do plan on finishing all 12 books though (3) google cert AND IBM cert - im taking both because google covers R and IBM covers python - this will FURTHER give me a guide on things to learn while i’m also teaching myself - the pacing for the certs are too slow for me, but they’re helpful in filling the gaps - it’s also nice to show employers, especially nice to have two case studies in R and python to put on the resume (both certs have a project at the end) This is MY path. But, it’s still advice. Advice for anyone reading this, but also a reminder for me lol.
