I wished there were more individuals enrolling as biology and chemistry majors where I'm studying. Both departments' have less than 30 students in all levels and it's disparaging to say the least. It's wonderful to hear that you found microbiology as your discipline when you were so far along the path towards graduating. Seeing this has definitely made me more comfy with my major (chem) cuz I personally enjoy it even if that means I'll have to do supplemental studying in the States in order to start working as a chemist or whatever I think will be my career over there. Just goes to show that you can be doing great in college but not so sure where you'll be headed afterwards with all of that greatness. Best video I've found on the topic of careers in sciences/microbio (beats all career day talks that I had to sit thru for all of high school. ps they all turned out to be physician conventions cuz everyone was wearing designer dresses under white coats as their uniform. )

We don't have anything food micro specific in terms of our curriculum - only a couple of subjects, because we're all shown all parts of microbiology equally in our undergrad. I’ve just been working as a Colorist until I figure out what I wanted to do with my life. University scares me, I fast tracked through high school (graduated in 2 years) and didn’t take any advanced classes. I’m worried I’m behind, Especially being out of school for a while. Any advice on setting my self up better beforehand? I’ve been reading a lot of material on bacteria and phages although they are not scientific papers.

You're probably smart considering you finished school early, so you should be fine going to college even if you took time off. I only learned about phage in one class before I started my career. I did research on fungi in grad school so it's not a big deal if you're not an expert in any area. I will say that a biology degree requires LOTS of studying... that was the case for me anyway but you're definitely not behind. I would just be sure you actually want to do research or medical because you can't do much with a bio/ science degree otherwise

I’m a 10th grade high school student and have been so interested in microbiology for quite a while. I love this video and I was just wondering if you have any advice to gain experience and or start networking in this field as a young high school student.
@LivinglikeLeila
@LivinglikeLeila 4 жыл бұрын
Hm good question. It may be more challenging as a high school student but maybe you could find students/professors in labs and ask if you could volunteer/shadow? It may be basic work for a bit but you could potentially observe. In the mean time you could learn about various areas of research online/through reading scientific articles.

Hii. I just found your channel. I'm 27 and currently in Georgia State too. I'm doing my BS in Biology because I'm also interested in Microbiology. I did have a few questions though: 1) I'm interested more in Bacteriology after taking the lab I did for my Associate's so I was wondering if there are also jobs that focus more on that like gram staining, testing effects of antibiotics, carbohydrate fermentation and all that stuff 2) Do you have to remember all the different tests by heart or do they provide with a reference on which one to do for the specific bacteria? Thanks ❤

Hi... this video was very helpful for me thank you. I'm planning on studying microbiology(my bachelors degree) or biology(so then i can later continue in microbiology) but I'm stressed about it. Was it hard for you, all the studying, working? Were you stressed out all the time?
@LivinglikeLeila
@LivinglikeLeila 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly yes. I studied a ton, cried a lot, and stressed lol. However, everything was ALWAYS ok. I am a very studious person so I know how to study but do not retain the information well, so for some people it can be easier. I almost dropped out of grad school but pushed through. I also was always (and still am) pretty hard on myself. I wanted high grades so that is what I worked toward. I don't mean any of this to scare you, you will be fine and the time goes so fast anyway, but it's definitely difficult.

I did biology with a concentration in microbiology which I would suggest because you'll probably learn a wider range of subjects. At the end of the day I don't think it would matter that much, experience is more important so you should be good!

If I had to ask, what is the most difficult things in the science classes (mainly the chem classes and the biology classes). Is it the maths, the concepts? And is there anything I could do to see if microbiology is something that I would want to make a career out of such as reading an introduction to microbiology text book? (Because I dont know how I would fair in chem classes since chemistry isnt too up my alley mainly due to me not being interested in it)
@LivinglikeLeila
@LivinglikeLeila 4 жыл бұрын
I would say all the information. In Biology there are a ton of processes you'll likely learn (signal transduction, Krebs cycle, etc.) plus all of facts of life, the body, animals. For chemistry it'll be more math and understanding how reactions work. I wouldn't suggest reading a micro textbook to figure out if you want a career in it, see if you can shadow/volunteer in a lab or just join a lab for a semester or 2. In my career I don't need to remember those processes, I need to know how to conduct experiments (using various equipments, media, reagents, etc.) , think logically about them so I can run new and better experiments, data analysis, scientific reading and writing, and so on. It's more hand on. College classes gave me a lot of info but most of it isn't relevant to my work, education is just required for the job but experience is more important.
