I often feel discouraged when coming across my own failures, so I appreciate you for including those minor stumbles. I'm someone who is always stuck making stops, and taking the long route, so it's important for me to hear about other people's successful journeys and see how they persevered. I just keep telling myself that it's the scenic route! I can't imagine any another profession that would be a better match for me, considering my temperament and passions. Thank you so much for sharing your journey!

Best student teacher that I ever had arrived in my classroom carrying her own personal step stool. She probably did not reach five feet tall, and needed her stool to reach up on the blackboard where the kids could see. We did the step-by-step process on paper, but I let her run the class as much as she liked. It is the only way to see what it feels like. Oh, my fourth grade kids loved her. What a treat she was, her almost five feet to my 6'2". I think the principal was having a little fun with her aging basketball coach.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for that explanation of majors. I have been trying to research this for so long and I could not find a clear answer. I’ve always wanted to became an elementary school teacher, and I needed to do a research project on the steps for the requirements on my chosen career. I was so stressed, but you’ve made me so relieved. Now I’m even more excited to begin my journey soon to becoming a teacher. Thank you so much!

Hi Maya, I have been watching your videos and learned more about teaching world. I just finished my student teaching (single subject in math) and I have been applying at schools. I think jobless/seeking job is rough because it is hard to stay encouraging and positive. I am originally from South Korea and to be honest, I feel like being a foreign person is hard to get hired especially at schools. I don't think I have any problem with communicating with people as I have lived here long enough and received my degrees here. However, it is quite frustrating that I will always sound different and will not have a perfect English. Sometimes I feel like I am just being self-pity, but I don't even though how I can encourage myself. I worked hard to pass all the tests, TPAs (really really annoying tasks lol), and student teaching. I hope there is a school for me. Thank you!

@@noemicristalperez3718 CBU>UCR or any other university. The program CBU has set in place has kept me where I'm at because CBU (although awesome/and truly pushes you) will make me a better teacher. You cannot student teach until you pass all state tests. I always hear about aspiring teachers students teaching before taking the RICA. The RICA is tough. I think it is way tougher than any CSET. CSET's are subject based and that isn't a problem for me. I enjoy the subbing/teaching upper elementary and I can see that being a problem for passing the RICA. I still think the RICA is by far the most difficult state test.

Currently an English major Junior at a UC pursuing a Bacholor's, but I'm struggling to find which program is more relevant to my dream career 😭 there is so many programs; Single-subject, Multi-subject. I want to apply to a bilingual authorization program, but before I can I need a teacher credencial. I want to be teacher that teaches little kids who struggle with English proficiency like reading, writing, and speaking, but I don't know which program would be best accurate for what I want to be. I want to make sure I choose the right one and not wait last minute😭

This was so helpful! I'm in the middle of studying for my CSET now. There's so much to review! I thought the CBEST had a lot to review. Did you have to do field observation hours before going into the credential program? Or did your substitute teaching job already count towards that?

Hello Maya! This is actually my first time watching your video and you have re-inspired me on my path to becoming a Special Education Teacher. I am currently struggling with having to work, take my courses and do my field work experience. I have about 11 more course to go before earning my Bachelor's. However, what would you advise for me to do in preparing for my CBEST and CSET exams? I have never heard of RICA before either, and that earning your credentials is different than just taking the tests (CBEST and SCET).

Difference between teaching in a private school and public school?
@PrinceMarcusWilliam
@PrinceMarcusWilliam 6 жыл бұрын
You don't need a credential to teach in a private school. The pay is also much less for private, yet the work is about the same. Private schools don't need to follow (and really never do) CCSS. Public is much larger with more options for students (SDC, DLI, RSP, Speech and more), so there is a greater need for content specific teachers/educators. How do I know this? I'm a substitute teacher (for now... in my 3rd year) and my mom is a 1st grade teacher at a private school. She is in her 24th year... I think right now and pay for her is about $48K. Terrible! First year teachers with a masters in Riverside school district is $59.590 and goes up each year there after. You can look up transparent California and see the pay scales all over CA. Also, I don't think private school has minimum days. In RUSD, Wednesdays are minimum days (students leave about an hour and 15 minutes sooner than normal days).

Hi Bree! For sure, it can feel verrrry overwhelming and that book is huge. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I just went on the CTC exam site and took a practice test (of one section) + memorized how they structured their answers. Then I'd take it again and see if I got a better score. Usually I'd do this with a section I'm not particularly strong in (like history). That way, I felt like I was still studying/trying when I didn't want to look at the giant CSET book :)

Actually I’m really confused how does the college system work here. I want to teach mandarin language in future, wondering what should I major when I am going to get my bachelor, should I choose education or Chinese? Or it doesn’t matter at all, I can choose early childhood development, and go to grad school to get education major degree? 🤣🤣
@el90skid32
@el90skid32 4 жыл бұрын
For teaching, the B.A does not really matter because the credential programs are a separate thing. If you get a BA in Education you will need a multiple subject credential to teach in elementary. If you would like to teach Chinese, then you will need a single subject credential after receiving your B.A in Education, that is why many people complete a Masters/credential program during grad school, to get both, although you don’t have to. On the other hand, you can also pursue a Masters in Education, Child Development, Counseling etc. even if your B.A is in another subject area other than Education, for example Chinese in this case, you can go to grad school and complete a Masters in Education or even counseling etc. through a Masters/credential program, or you can just get into the regular credential program; if wishing to teach elementary, the completion of exams (CSET, CBEST etc.), just like all teaching credential program in CA, it just depends on the school you go to, their are many options out there, look into them. I think I am about right, not sure tho 🤔. I am like 98% certain is something like this, correct me if I am wrong peeps 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Daphney Qin I wanted to point out that you are able to get a Masters, but sometimes you will need more prerequisite courses in order to take certain graduate courses dealing with Education (500 level courses); thus, this is one of the reason why they recommend and ask you at an early stage, undergraduate level, if you want to be a teacher or not. If yes, you begin to take undergraduate classes dealing more on your field of study, which will help you towards graduate coursework. I know it can be confusing, but like I said, their are many different paths that one can take. I am currently taking my CSET, after graduating CSUCI in 2010, let’s just say I took a 10 year break; 😝 however, I am back stronger than before! 💪🏽

What colleges/universities would you recommend if I ultimately want to become a teacher (elementary)? I've found that most schools have education studies majors/minors and better graduate education/teacher credential programs? Is this usually the case, so would I have to either (1) major in education studies, (2) minor in education studies and major in something else (like liberal arts, child development, psychology, or a subject like language arts) and then continue on to a master's program? Because a major in education studies doesn't seem that appealing to me, as it's more of a "history"-based curriculum. Can you recommend some other pathways?
@mayaleex3
@mayaleex3 6 жыл бұрын
Hi!! :) in the video I addressed the topic of majors/minors hahaha sorry if I'm repeating, but you definitely don't have to major in education! You can essentially major in anything you want, because the teaching credential program is what lands you the job (in most cases). It helps to major in education because you can have some classes waived in your credential program, and during your interview it's easy to express why you'd be a good candidate if you already got a BA in it.

Do you know if there is reciprocity between CA and FL? I graduate in December and have already passed my exams to be certified in Florida... It sounds very similar to what I had to do to get my degree in Education. I did a full-time 16-week internship as well. And completed ESOL and Reading Endorsements... I'm moving to LA (my spouse got a job there) and I'm so worried I won't be able to work right away.

Hi maya lee, I’m aware that teachers don’t make a lot of money. Do you teach after school and during summer at something like learning center for extra incomes?

Would you say you making around 70k a year with the annual salary+tutor+summer school? I also live in California and I know for a fact that the housing price here is sooo expensive.

Kevin Van I definitely do not make 70K even with all of my added side income /: I currently don’t live on my own and have to have roommates because it’s certainly sooo expensive!

(Pt 29:11) images.app.goo.gl/oe2EkfdL89XFCZkT8
