Old Goat wanted some garlic this week! He's in the braid behind Ms. Sheila. Very timely subject this week! Man, you ain't kidding about spotted wilt virus! I had about 80 plants last year and lost a third of them to SWV. All of my Kellogg's Breakfast. BOOM! That's the most devastating problem I have on tomatoes with the blights probably next. I'm glad to see y'all working with some of Brad's varieties! I've grown a bunch of them over the years and they are fun to grow! Those Brad's Atomic Grapes are one of the craziest things I've ever grown! They turned every color you can imagine and it took me a while to figure out when they were ripe! I had to rely on "feel" until I figured it out. They would start out in deep purple/green phases, then get some browns, bronzes, blues, and even oranges. Really wild, and they were pretty good tasting.

I read that 10 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide in a gallon of water and spray the vines and it supposedly kills the mildew. I don't have a problem with it right now but if I see the tiniest bit of it I'm going to try that mixture.

Thanks for the disease tips. Up north in Boston I most commonly deal with late blite on tomatoes or powdery mildew towards the end of the season. I use a dilution of hydrogen peroxide on tomatoes and try to do every 2 weeks to stay ahead of it. I've used a solution w/ baking soda on the mildew. Both work fantastic but not perfect. Depends on the year too.

Old goat is behind mamma Hoss head with the garlic. I deal with powder mildew on squash and cucumber blight on my tomatoes. This year I have all ready lost 4 tomato plants to wilt. The wilt is a new one for me. As a side note. I have always planted indeterminate tomatoes and every year I have to go to the eye doctor to get steroids for inflammation of the eye. This year I bought all determinate seeds from Hoss and haven’t had a problem all year. Until I decided to go get a few indeterminate tomatoes after plating them. My eye (always my right eye) is burning, stinging, and sensitive to light. Not sure why this happens but I won’t be planting indeterminate tomato anymore.

Ive gotta dry Mediterranean climate in my area so that southern humid misery we luckily dont have (probably why this is a huge agricultural county especially historically this area was a power house in early america). Powdery mildew always shows up in fall when the nights start getting cool(er) and the moisture comes back and wipes out my squashes, but by then they're usually about done anyway. But now that I said this I jinxed myself and I'll get some awful disease thats gonna wipe everything out, lol. tbh my biggest struggle in the garden is controlling aphids!

Sneaky old goat is sort-of hiding in the garlic braid behind Mama Hoss this week! For the Monterey package, our most common disease issue we deal with is late blight our 2nd planting of summer vegetables for a fall harvest. Of course the plants being weakened by the August summer heat does not help either. We used to put down straw like Mama Hoss described, but since the amino-pyralid issue started to show up for some people, I'm reluctant to use any purchased straw product. I do agree 200% that drip goes a long way to help with disease prevention as you don't splash water on the leaves at all (unless it rains). That Hossinator Jalapeno is HUGE!!!!

Excellent stuff y'all. Down here on the Space Coast of FL (9b), I've come to learn that my best chances for success are starting my hot pepper plants in early Nov with a goal of a few good harvests by June. After that, consistent high temps with high humidity = lots of pest and disease. Most of my plants just give up and I don't blame them. Thanks for a great education! Oh yeah, your Lola bananas are doing very well so far and I'll be giving your Hossinator Jalapenos a try when the time comes to start 2024.

The old goat is in the garlic string behind Sheila's head. Probably one of the mildews. Usually show up on my vine crops and sometimes okra, depending on the variety I am growing. Otherwise it is mostly pest pressure and whatever they spread. Since I can't control the rain or lack of and or humidity, I try to grow crops with the quickest maturity, I rotate and always add compost and preplant fertilizer to give my plants the best start. I do fertilize throughout the growing season too. Also, some crops are only grown every other year or so as a way to "rotate" crops. I had a bumper crop of cucumbers last year, thus not growing them this year. Thank you for addressing these issues, they are so helpful.
@LucindaBoykin
@LucindaBoykin Жыл бұрын
This is such a timely video; in a small backyard garden made of raised beds and containers, there's not much room for rotation, so having other strategies is immensely helpful. My determinate tomatoes usually make it through their life cycle just fine, and my indeterminates grow and produce beautifully...until the problem of the year hits. Some (most) years, it's blight, while others, it's leaf spot or wilt. I try to keep it positive and remember that the more problems I have one year, the more I learn about how to manage them so that I have fewer problems every year after that. This year, I've started new seeds to provide replacement plants and pruned a few suckers off my favorite and most healthy plants and rooted them under the grow lights so they're ready to go if I need them. Old Goat is gathering some garlic to go with his potatoes from last week. Does that mean he's making garlic mashed potatoes?

My Indigo blue cherry tomatoes all look like the leaves are curled up. The Indigo blue tomatoes are completely different in appearance and are putting on fruit. I also have zucchini squash that have leaves that keep turning brown and I suspect its mildew, but my other squash are doing fine planted right next to it. So frustrating. Back to the cherry tomatoes, I have other varieties planted right next to them as well and they are just fine. I may try to grow some more seedlings out and see if I can grow them in a growbag . My raised beds are pretty packed. Thank you for all the valuable information. The Old Goat is behind Sheila hanging in the garlic strand. I have been having trouble with downy mildew.
