This shows a very simple way of bezel setting by hand with minimal tools.
This link takes you to a video that shows you how to make the initial collet.

How would this process be different for a stone with corners like a hexagon, or worse, a triangle?
@metalofhonour
@metalofhonour 3 ай бұрын
You'd be absolutely fine doing any stone shape, but I'd definitely avoid pushing in on the corners. Stay away from the sharp corners and you'll be fine. Maybe even do your first pushes gently to decide where they're going. Then gradually push them all down in turn, so it's not such an aggressive process. 👍🏼

Oh I forgot to ask!!!! what type of wheel shaper do I need the shapes of blank engravers
@metalofhonour
@metalofhonour 6 ай бұрын
Sorry. I thought I'd replied. When a scorper is a fresh blank, I use a sintered diamond on carbide gravers and general stone grinding wheel on high speed steel gravers.

Hello again, I enjoyed this video. What was the tool you used that you call its like backstroking? It looks like an engraver but which I don’t know the name . Do I need to shape this myself??? Do you have a video that can show me how to shape this tool if it is an engraver??? Great job on explaining this video, Michelle

Hi. I think I mentioned at the beginning that it's a number 6 flat graver. Some will call it a scorper. Mainly for stone setting, but also used for some engraving. They all come as blanks that need to be shaped first. All of mine are in use and still have a lot of life in them. When I need a new one I'll record how I do the initial dressing. I'll do a video on general sharpening at some stage, as I have seen people use these straight out of the box. It's more of a gentle press/burnish on the backstroke, but key is the forward cut, but only when you're turning the work into the tool rather than pushing the tool forward. There's another variation of this setting scheduled to go live at 8pm gmt tonight.

Yes, I do remember now you did mention the name. I bought some from a friend that were already shaped and they’re still really sharp. I just don’t recall having one that looks like the one you used around the bezel. yes I understand completely that I let the turning of the bezel do the work of the burnisher, that I still can’t think of the name of. But it will be in my notes. lol 🙃 And I’m getting ready to watch your flower Bezel… but I do different shapes of bezels myself. I just really enjoyed the one technique that you used for this video. It has a much more refined finish and it looks beautiful. 🤗, Michelle Whenever you’re ready, that would be great to show how you shape your blank engravers . And actually that’s what they are but youth managed to turn one of them into a very very useful tool for working with bezels…

@Aumi.jewels yeah. The flat scorper graver is mainly for this on a bezel or bright mcut next to any setting to crisp it up. The flat looks very much like a micro version of the wood workers chisel. They work fine as long as they're sharp. I managed to do this in one go. It did need to be sharpened straight after though.

What type of vice is the ring in? What's the tool at 9:55 and does that make the bezels finish better? Lastly is that like a raw hide file at the 10:58 mark?

Thank you for commenting. That tool is the flat scorper mentioned at the beginning. It always makes a collet look better and is the professional way to achieve a brightcut on the inner rim. Things look okay without for people training though. But this sets it apart from lots of the common cheap rings on places like etsy. That other tool is just a buff stick with felt attach and some green dialux polish. It was only to brighten the piece up for the video without full on polishing. Because I didn't want to lead the video into a polishing tutorial. This is held in a cheap ebay ball vice (not grs). It can just as easily be done in hand clamps, but this helps me keep it in focus for the video. Thanks agains 👍🏼

@@metalofhonour I didn't even think about a cheap vise on eBay, Ive only ever heard of GRS. That's valuable info, I only have a regular vise clamp so I use that with towels as a buffer between the ring and vise.

It's definitely not a grs product I'd rush to get. This one is fine. This piece is between two scrap bits of smooth wood with leather superglued to it. Really simple and cheap. My old air graver was from ebay too, but only just replaced with a grs one. That is definitely worth the investment when people can.
