I grew up in the '50s and my grandmother had 11 brothers. Almost all of them were in the military at some point and they were all given these wool itchy dark green blankets. I'm not sure how we ended up with them but growing up we use them as batting. This is exactly how we finished off our quilts. Sometimes instead of quilting the actual quilt in the middle we would use yarn and tie off knots every four or five inches the width of our hand. Some of these blankets I still have to this day. My mother is alive and well and she remembers vividly are quilting moments with my sisters

I love this story!! I have several family members that have those same blankets and I had wondered how they would work as batting. How do they hold up over the years?
@DiannaAtherton2 ай бұрын
@@KarefreeKrafting excellent. Not to mention they fold easily. I recommend you try one as batting. When we cover a guest bed the corners fall nicely

Thank you for being so clear about what you are doing and having the camera pointed right where you are working. I cut and sewed my first fat quarter quilt today and had to idea how to finish it. This is perfect! P.S. it's a quilt for the kitties.

Thank you for making this so simple. I made quilts like this decades ago and haven't kept up on the hobby, so I forgot how. We have a new grandson this Christmas and I wanted to make something handmade for him. Now it'll be done in a jiffy!

Great instruction. I may sew down that mitered corner myself because I feel that it might come undone. Never used the backing for the binding but have always wanted to. Think I will with my current project.

I just put my new walking foot on my first machine to quilt my first baby quilt. Do I use the walking foot to do this part also or change back to regular presser foot. New to sewing as well🙄
@KarefreeKrafting3 жыл бұрын
You can do it either way, but the walking foot will make it easier

Would this method work if using fleece as the backing? Not expecting to use batting.
@KarefreeKrafting2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but if you try it, I would love to know the results
@stephaniekosters2794 Жыл бұрын
I do fleece all the time- no problems
@notesfromleisa-land Жыл бұрын
I might suggest pressing the binding first before taking it to the machine. Regrettably, twisted binding will not right itself in the wash as it is sewn in place and the weave is not pressed and sewn square.
@karenmulholland67043 жыл бұрын
What can I do to repair a cut in the backing? I snipped it as I trimmed the batting. Help
@KarefreeKrafting3 жыл бұрын
If it's small, you could use fray check and a whip stitch. If its larger, you may want to consider a patch, which if it matches the front of your quilt, might be a nice artistic touch

This is the bit I'm struggling with ive no idea how to put backing on I keep getting it wrong I'm new to patchwork and sewing I don't have certain items I cnt afford.
@KarefreeKrafting2 жыл бұрын
The easiest and cheapest method I have found for basting is with safety pins. I understand about the cost of supplies. Most of my sewing supplies are things I found around the house or even at the hardware store.

So, you don’t iron the binding folds 1st?
@KarefreeKrafting4 жыл бұрын
No, most fabrics are ok with just pins or clips. Also, only iron if you are using 100%cotton batting.
