I had to watch about a dozen videos of self-binding techniques before I found yours. Your method is exactly what I wanted. The others mostly were adding 10" to the backing to do a border/binding thing. Not what I wanted for my little mugrugs I'm trying to finish as gifts. So... a Big Thank you!!!

CORNERS: Fold the pointed corners of the backing fabric over the quilt front to begin this binding. Make a perfect triangle that measures FOUR INCHES ON EACH STRAIGHT SIDE OF THE TRIANGLE. The backing fabric for the binding extends 2 inches beyond the rest of the quilt. The same ratio works on other bindings. ( example: to make a finished 1/2 binding, start with a 1 inch backing binding fabric, then fold a triangle 2 inches on each straight edge.) Raise up the folded miter before stitching it and just whack off the triangle point underneath so it doesn't show. This is a very good tutorial, with all the things we like: no extra talking about the weather etc., just plain, easy to understand instructions and great visuals on how to do this from someone who is an expert, no background music. Thank you.

One of my favorite videos. I watch it before I bind every time and still see something new. Today I realized that as well as I planned this out, I should have thought more about auditioning the backing fabric. I wound up piecing my backing. Ok. But I never thought about the pieced portion showing up as part of the binding. Haha. Oh well!

I'm so glad I found your site I LOVE your quilt binding technique. The mitered corners make so much sense. I would rather experiment with getting the dog ears correctly with the iron. Then folding the fabric the typical way when doing binding.Only to have to pick it out and try again. !!!!... I seem to have trouble getting the fold wrong at times. But with this technique I really think I will have a better chance of having a beautiful mitered corner. I'm going to give this a try on my next quilt. And watch it step by step, thank you again for this wonderful video.Mery Christmas ❤️🎄🧑🎄

This is great method for volume and charity quilting. Will definitely use. One question: I never end up with a square quilt after adding backing. Your method seems to presume that the quilt is square before you measure and cut the fabric for the fold over. How do you make sure your quilt is square, or does that matter with this technique?
@HayesSewingMachineCo Жыл бұрын
Make sure you're using an accurate 1/4" seam when piecing. When measuring for sashing, measure the center of the blocks/quilt, rather than the edge. Things like that will help make sure you're quilt is more square towards the end. Depending on what your quilt looks like, you could also try squaring it off before layering it.

Do the center folded edges of the finished MITERED CORNERS need to be hand stitched or machine stitched together? I don't think they do because there are no raw edges inside. If you take a look inside, you can see that the center edges are completely folded. What do you think?

Loretta, I love your videos. I live in Florida so we'll probably never meet face to face but I would love it if you retired to Florida. LOL. Have you ever done a tutorial on squaring up a quilt? I've seen a few, but those are for people who have perfect blocks and perfect seams in their quilt. What if your quilt is less than perfect? How do I square it up? Thanks.
@HayesSewingMachineCo2 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying our videos! It depends a little bit on the quilt how you would square it up, but traditionally just use your 6x24 rotary ruler and run it alongside the edge, and trim the excess.
