CORRECTION - The outer fabric should measure 32” x 42” (not 40”) The method is still correct - Please follow exactly as I have shown. The finished blanket measures 28” x 38” 😊

I have made less than 10 self binding blankets and my sister couldn't figure out to +10 inches all around (5 inch border) how to measure to cut to edges, then turn inside out OH my goodness...... This is not only an easier way, but I LOVE the corner edging tip the most! Was about to make 5 self binding blankets the traditional way they are made.... I'm going to try it this was instead. @NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing 3 жыл бұрын
you just do what you gotta do! Cotton or poly cotton is probably best. Just wash and dry first in case of any shrinkage. Hemming curves is tricky at first but it’s all about practice and challenging yourself to sew with nice finish. Do you have a straight stitch only with zig zag or a serger/ overlocker too?

Is there a formula so I can easily change the thickness of my binding?

If you press all around so you have the finished width, where the edges meet will be where the seam goes to the corner. Mark that diagonally seam on both sides, add seam allowance and cut. Then you can just easily stitch together as shown in video. Cheers

Is there a formula for mitering the corners if the binding/border is going to be smaller than the 1.5”? I’m wanting to use a 1” border on some placemats. How far would I measure out to the sides on the corner diagonal? I knew at this😂.

For a one inch border, you will be folding edges ½” and then 1” . Mark 2⅝” from each corner to join a diagonal line. Sew the angles with a ¼” seam and trim

Your method for mitered corners is terrific. My sewing group makes blankets for our local children’s hospital and this method will be very helpful. I’m confused about the measurements I see you corrected the outer measurements. In the beginning of the video you stated the inner measurements should be 2 inches shorter than the finished blanket. If that is correct why does the blanket measure 28x36 when completed. What am I not understanding. I’m new to sewing so I may be missing something. Thanks

Does this method apply with the center fabric 30" and the back fabric 40" ? What size is the border? Thank you.
@NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing 2 жыл бұрын
The border ends up 1½” wide. Whatever your centre fabric measures, the back fabric needs to bigger by 3” all around. So 6” wider and 6” longer. If your fabric is 30” square, then your back fabric needs to be 36” square. If you want to use your 40”, then you’ll have a wider border and will need to adjust how you sew the corners.

Question: is the fabric company in the USA? Is it sold by the yard? How long till it arrives? Love your videos!

Thanks so much. The company is in Korea. They had expressed the fabric to me and did not take long at all. I am not sure how long for regular shipping. Best to contact them directly on their site. Thanks for watching🙏

Could I make this with cuddle fleece as the inner layer? Or would it be too bulky to make such beautiful corners? PS. It's my first ever baby blanket, and I trust your tutorials more than any other! ;-D

Yes, absolutely! Just try the corner method on some scrap if you are nervous, but honestly it would be almost impossible to make a mistake if you follow step by step and be accurate. I will have an even easier baby blanket in the next couple of weeks too. Thanks for watching🙂

This blanket was easy and simple make. Watched it several times before making new grandson’s blanket. Even finished one for his older sister. You have replaced all the other long drawn useless video’s, which have been deleted.

I’ve been told numerous times by numerous people you always always pre-wash your fabric and put it in the dryer when you’re going to be making a baby blanket Who wants to go to all that work to find out that when it gets washed and dried it gets totally distorted

I'm sorry. But shouldn't the cut dimensions of the cotton fabric be 32" wide by 42" long instead of 32" wide by 40" long as quoted in your instructions based on a 3" border around the microfiber dimensions of 26" wide by 36" long?

Hi Estela, yes you are correct. My mistake but the method I have shown is correct. Have commented on this and also will try to fix as was not picked up in editing. Thanks! Hope you like this method. Cheers!

Thank you so much for responding! The formula is correct and a superior method indeed. 👏

Thanks Estela. I prefer to do this way rather than sewing everything together, trying to press accurately and then topstitch around. It’s much neater and speedier this way. Have made many things this way including placemats and table runners etc. Please have a look at my “no topstitching” placemat video on my channel. You may like that as well. Cheers!

I'm confused. In the notes, you claim the outer measurements are 28" x 38". But in the video, you cut the outer fabric 26" x 36". ???
@NotchesSewing
@NotchesSewing Жыл бұрын
when the outer fabric is folded over, it adds an extra inch all around so it will be 2” wider and 2” longer .
