I use this technique alot and always love it. The roots are taken out and put back in so that roots are there but on our terms, allowing for a smudged line and allowing the root colour to appear more shadowed than dence. Really love this colour. x

I adore Justin he's a beyond this planet amazing colorist. I have a few clients that do this same exact service I get it... but looking at this now... i couldn't help but wonder.... What is the point of A bleach Retouch at the dark blonde regrowth + Partial Highlights only to follow it with a shadowed base color which is almost as dark as the natural color? 😕
@CourtneyBStylisteducation8 жыл бұрын
Because the shadow root he wanted to do was lighter than her natural. He used a 7-8 level and she is naturally looks to me at least a 5. If he would have did it in one step it would have pulled to much warmth. This way he could control it.
@LeSeulGarcon8 жыл бұрын
Courtney B-Stylist this client is Caucasian... Could have used a high lift tint to break that base color without having to lift to pale yellow only to go back down. A 5 to 7 isn't that far of a reach...
@NatashaGraves5558 жыл бұрын
Yes that is exactly what I was wondering :-O
@CourtneyBStylisteducation7 жыл бұрын
Still to a lot of warm tones. the undertone in 6 and below is red and red is more difficult to control than the orange and yellow undertones of level 7 and above. highlifts are not usually recommended on levels 6 or darker if you dont want to see any warmth, which Justin did not. Not trying to argue with you, but after 18 years of haveing A LOT of blonde clients, I know my shit. ;-)
@nalarandall99767 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I like the ombre thing but its had its trend time. Its over now. You will still see girls doing this. I'd rather get 2 looks for 1...get your entire head done blonde and let it grow out so your get some variation. I can't stand going back and doing the roots darker, pointless. Faking root grow out? lol just let it happen naturally whats the rush.

@TravisJReed7 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of warmth left in her hair and the color is really uneven. It definitely needed a toner and not just a tinted shampoo and conditioner plus a tinted shampoo and conditioner only lasts a couple washes and if you keep using it with such a strong pigment her hair will start to turn blue or purple which is why a toner needs to be used instead.. I think the shadow color was way too dark and I agree that process could have been skipped entirely. Could have used a hi-lift with a really cool base to get a similar effect and again the roots seem almost black in comparison. A shadow root is just that a shadow normally only a couple shades darker than the rest of the hair, that was significantly darker. She basically left the salon looking like she needed to get her roots done the next day. indoor lighting can have cool tones that can disguise uneven color and then you go out in the sunlight and you will see all the areas that still have warmth or gold. I personally feel hair that long should have at least two or three different owners in it. One for the overall base one for a brighter highlight and one for a little bit of depth even if they're only a level or so apart. That's a lot of hair to make all one color which starts to give the effect of a week. any variation in color that you see at the end it's just from uneven bleaching and a lack of toning.

I love Justin but I thought the same thing - super uneven color and the shadow root isn't right for this level of blonde / look. A toner should have definitely been used, even if he wants to push the DPHue line (which I understand) but not at the cost of the integrity of good work.

@@rebeccabruton9359 It shouldn't burn if your scalp is prepped properly and no more than 20 vol is used. (Good bleach like Guy Tang can lift the hair with only 20 vol.)
@Smilesremember2Smile4 жыл бұрын
@@rebeccabruton9359 Yeah so a lot of hair stylists don't tell their clients how to prep for bleach. You want to make sure to not wash your hair for at least 5 days. Not washing helps protect your scalp. You want greasy hair before bleaching. When you wash your hair you can make micro abrasions on your scalp and then if you have bleach on your scalp it will burn in those places. Also putting coconut nut oil on the scalp before bleaching can really help prevent burning.

Why he bleached the roots to go darker again?
@BrittaniLovesAll7 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking she had more regrowth than the amount of shadow root they wanted to achieve.
@shruffles357 жыл бұрын
Because her natural color is quite dark. Looks like a level 5 to 5.5 imo. He lifted that color to a canary yellow, and then applied a level 8 hair color so that her roots would be a bit softer and not so harsh. This would be an utter pain in the ass to keep up with, but if you absolutely do not want brassy reddish roots, it's the only way to go if you are that dark. On some level 6 people, using a level 10 hair color with a 20 volume developer, and just briefly leaving it on (10 -15 min) produces the same softening effect. You wash it out just before you start getting brassy, but you have to move quick!!! even 3 more minutes, and you get brassy. Softer brunette is hard to achieve in just one step when you start out so dark. You'd have to do a test strand.
@BrittaniLovesAll7 жыл бұрын
ooo thanks for the tip! maybe you can help me with something else....i have a client with level 4 natural. i made her into a platinum blonde, but now when we retouch, even with toning, she is still gold/orange. she's been coming to me for years and is ok with it, but i want it to be brighter. her ends are lighter than her roots obviously, i'm blaming that on the environment and her repeatedly washing that hair. it had no pigment. so i think i 'm going to have to bleach her out twice, which sucks cuz to do it once it takes 40 min. i even upped the developer, (no no) and the timing. same thing. she also has some yellow banding i'd like to get rid of, without hurting her other hair. i use olaplaex on her as well.
@BrittaniLovesAll7 жыл бұрын
and if this is why he pre lightened the rootage, why wouldn't he just use the level 8 with a 30 vol developer to soften the base?
@shruffles357 жыл бұрын
Because level 8 with a 30 vol developer stills pulls too much brass on someone that dark. If you want a truly muted soft brown you must get it to the yellow stage, and then tone with an ashy toner. As far as your client, if you have Olaplex stick with a 30 vol and leave it on with heat. The Olaplex turns the 30 vol as gentle as a 20 vol. Unfortunately, I know you guys like to turn around your clients as quickly as possible, but patience is the key for her if you want to preserve the quality and condition of her hair. 40 minutes is not long enough. As long as the bleach mix stays wet, you wait until she has just lifted to past the yellow stage.

I use T18 now for a year and leave it on 45 mins, Id rather have it grayish than yellow. Im sorry but I see a yellow blonde tinge, unless its warm lighting from above. I think I will just leave the bleach longer, I mean it gets almost white on its own with the bleach I use, Like the inside of a banana LIGHT!. But maybe I need to go from 30vol to 40vol to give that yellow a kick.
@nalarandall99767 жыл бұрын
Galoida, it really depends on the base of the persons hair. My hair is natural level 4 dark. I've gone super bright red in my teens and had to bleach almost white before going to that fire red. I also have my cosmetology license and was the top in my class for hair color formulation... I love formulation. My frustration is the tiny little tinge of blonde/yellow. Im a perfectionist, its not something others will perceive. Only I will see it along with other obsessive types lol. So yes and no...There is a tinge of blonde in there that reads yellow to me. Maybe its the lights that are warm reflection off the hair. None the less the hair is STUNNING.
