This is a great presentation. I’m going to do something very similar on a bumper since it will not have direct UV and would be very time intensive to paint the whole thing. Thanks for the addl tips like the alcohol trick, mixing ratios, and always describing the gun settings.

Really good to see this. I'm doing the same sort of thing with rattle cans on my van. I have a small number of spot repairs to finish off. I'm using 1k epoxy primer, 1k high build and then 1k clear. Then after two weeks, I'm going over it with 2k activated clear. Then after a week, carefully flatting it back 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 then 3M Finesse it polish. All paint is by ProXL. Very good quality. I'm doing metallic silver to match. Quite a challenge but certainly possible. I'm not using a blend solution but I know I can get a pretty good finish - it just takes time and patience.

As a professional automotive painter for over 20 years to be honest blending clear is not a good idea for a quality lasting repair and that's why no paint manufacturer will warranty their clear if it's been blended, I get why you would do it as I was very good at it, but the only time I would use a blended edge is on say a windshield post or other small area to keep from having to clear a complete roof as many times an insurance company will not pay for the extra cost but if possible always clear a complete panel such as a door, fender, decklid or hood, your large flat panels such as a hood will have a tendency over time to expose your blend edge from sun and weather exposure because to blend clear your making it very thin causing loss of adhesion, I will say that blending is a skill every painter should master as early as possible as color blending is used in almost every repair.
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
The only time I blend clear is on a bumper and only if It a freebie or I communicate with the customer what to expect. It's always better to paint the entire panel. I don't like blending A pillars , because the sun will destroy the blend and it will be visible . It is a useful technique for hobbiest or in certain situations tho.
@SteamTrain2639 Жыл бұрын
Great reply, makes a lot of sense. Im curious how you sell a job like this. Do you give them a price to redo the bumper the "right" way and a cheaper price for a clear blend like this? Of course this doesn't apply if it was just a freebie for the customer @@GarageNoise

Just wondering why did you use fade out on the upper edge where you had the foam tape, isn't that the point of foam tape so it leaves a soft edge that can be buffed anyway? As the edge is the weakest point.

For that repair I wouldn't use putty, just sand evenly and use a bit of primer on it. Much faster and done properly 👌

I have to do a similar work. Grooves on the roof of my Mustang 2017. Paint peels off from the bottom of these grooves for unknown reason. Clear coat peals with base to the primer. Is it possible to do it only with spray cans?. How to blend it properly on the edges of these grooves? On the top or on the center of these edges? Base in the same spot as clear or not? These grooves are very narrow, about 5mm.

Love your videos, do you dilute the isopropyl alcohol any for use on car? And I sprayed my 2008 toyota avalon for a repair first one. Color looked good nice metallic the first time, but I made the mistake of not going all the way to body lines and had lines. Tried to sand and feather but paint came out darker and less metallic! I have to redo in spring😢😂 first paint job boy did I learn a lot!

No, not and have it look right. Best bet is to blend color and clear full panel. It's really not that much more work and it will look right.

Can you blend Acrylic lacquer into 2k clear using this product?
@fargonianproductions2767 Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, I need some advice on some paint work my grandfather and I are doing on our boat. We layed down the high build primer then sanded and prepped for paint, then layed down the base coat and followed up with the clear coat after it cured. Now the we’re running into is the clear is really hazy even after wet sanding and using compound. It’s an aluminum boat and the paint is custom matched acrylic spray paint, did we screw something up or is it from something else?
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
Hard to say, but I have a couple questions. what clearcoat did you use? Is the clear cured? And how long did you wait between coats of clear?
@supersonic86324 ай бұрын
That sag on the corner happened in the basecoat, can be seen around 13:46, after the clear is down, heat lamp or cutting/polishing won't help it unfortunately

After you use the icing are you using 180 then 320? Also for the primer are you using 1.7 nozzle?
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
You can use 180 to cut the icing but you want to refine those scratches with 320 before primer. I use a 1.5 tip for primer but I use my primer as a primer surfacer so it's not real thick. If your spraying primer as a high build you may need a 1.7 Appreciate your comment and support!

Thanks for the tip! I’m mainly learning bumper repair for my job, for plastic bumpers you think a 1.5 and primer surfacer is best? Also as a video idea: “cold weather spraying”

Have you ever used urechem intercoat clear to paint flames/graphics on before final clear, or as a "flowcoat" A gallon of dbc500 is $400.

I used clear basecoat when laying down graphics or flames to protect it. I believe it's the same. Intercoat clear is typically just clear basecoat. It's not actually clear coat.
