Even more Bruce Lee's phylosophy. But honestly, I'd go further, don't block and then strike. Strike and block at the same time. Or even better, strike and parry at the same time. I could make a whole video on it, explaining it to the smallest detail, but I won't. I'm not photogenic or charismatic enough to make anyone listen. Anyway, you got my thumbs up. Karate and other traditional martial arts have become so watered down to appeal to sport competiton that many of the techniques have become ineffective. Take for instance the upwards block of Karate. Do that in a real fight and you may block the first punch but the next punch is going to hit you right in the face. How it should be really done is you step in while blocking, and use your forward momentum to jamb your forearm into your attackers arm pit, breaking their posture, affording you to counter attack. Your attacker can't attack you when they are off balanced or falling down. Even that circular block, requires a step in to be actually effective. You just don't stand there to block. That does nothing to stop an attack. The missing component is the step in. The secret sauce is using the block and turning it into an attack that breaks your attackers posture and stance. Karate blocks are blocks that become attacks when used the right way
@uwotm86347 жыл бұрын
Von Ace then those teachers must be horrible, I've been fortunate enough to train in traditional karate and learned proper blocks, if it doesn't work then they are not teaching traditional karate right

Good point Von Ace and great video Sensei Ando. I’ve studied traditional Okinawan karate as well as a Freestyle martial art and fought in full contact tournaments and I can attest that the traditional blocks cannot stop a punch (in fact - trying to do so against a full force punch can separate your shoulder). The boxing and Thai boxing blocks and parries work better. However, as Ando mentioned, the blocks seen in many katas are actually strikes and breaks. Also, they work better at very close range - like when your opponent is right on you and the block intercepts the attackers arm closer to his body, or is a strike to disrupt his advance and set you up for the next technique.

Never received bad advice from Sensei Ando. In this computer age, we can all add an online teacher to our training regime. I am not saying they can replace a sensei at the Dojo but to supplement them. I have checked out many and for me, Sensei Ando is the best. His teachings can be applied to any martial art and as a man in his 60,s who has studied 3 martial arts, Wing Chun, TKD and currently Shotokan, believe me when I say his teachings are universal! He respects tradition but is also unafraid of innovation and, again for me, the name of his organisation, "Happy Life martial arts" says it all! Follow him and you will learn more , i guarantee that!

I totally agree and I think that this is a wonderful way to learn how to fight and have a good self-defense! My biggest thing is is I'm totally defensive first person then offenses to the 100% max so I think he was saying the same thing because we don't teach people in martial arts to attack people. We teach them to defend people off being attacked... right? A lot of times I tell my students let that guy attacked me at 100% great that's when I throw him that's when I can defend myself the best because he's all in anytime you're all in! I feel that means everything that I know works after that moment thank you

This was a great video, unlike many others that advocate mostly useless and dangerous defensive tactics! Allowing an attacker to grab you or strike first, could get you killed. Many specific defenses are taught for such kind of attacks. But we will often never know the true intent and capability of an assailant or his accomplices. He or they, may be hiding deadly intentions, may be stronger, may be concealing weapons, may have friends close-by to join in, once the attack begins. So be aware and avoid possible danger situations, look for escape routes, AND NEVER allow such persons to get close to you if you are uncertain about them. A street attack can unleash brutal and deadly violence, it is not sport, there are no rules, no time outs, no one to rescue you or loved ones. So, "Those who can run away, live to fight another day." This is smart, there is no shame, no dishonor. I survived what appeared to be a car jacking attempt from 3 thugs by doing this. If you cannot run, had time to tell your aggressors to STOP, but contact is imminent, you MUST quickly take the fight to them (hopefully you have been properly trained), act with strong determination, speed, and simple combination power blows to vital areas, and/or use of a self-defense tool until you are able to escape. In such serious situations, you must flip that internal switch, and go from all that is normal, to the worst fucking nightmare your aggressors have ever known. I often say, "Let your power and determination flow from your heart." In my experience with formal martial art trainings, this practical approach gives best chances of survival.

Closing your eyes is not bad. What's wrong is if you're closing your eyes even when an attack isn't coming towards your face. Blinking will only make you blind for a tenth of a second, but if dust, blood, sweat, or a fingertip get into your eye, you will be blind for even longer. Don't train yourself not to close your eyes. Train yourself to get your head out of the way if anything comes at it, while at the same time, maintaining balance so as not to fall down. Do this by standing against a wall and having a partner throw punches at you, then blocking them.

I do agree that it is important to attack whenever you can but it should not always be the main priority because if your opponent is stronger,faster,or bigger than you,your offense will not be able to match his and you’ll be losing anyway.instead, I think the best way to survive a fight is to really balance your offense and defense so they can both work together just like you mentioned with following up defensive movements with offensive attacks.Great video tho 👍🏿

Blocking is still taking a beating; offense and defense at the same time/same technique is preferable. Blocking in such a way that it "strikes" and hurts or injures the attacker is best. There are formal blocks in WTF Taekwondo, but during sparring they are not really used. In highschool I would just throw out defense entirely, as only two people I knew could strike properly enough to actually hurt me (my instructor and my buddy Ben), so aside from involuntary reflexive blocks, I would just no sell entire barrages as I advanced on my opponent so I could get close enough to strike and/or grab and bind.

Maybe he's trying to say there should not be such thing as a block without an offensive intent, like setting your self up for a strike. But to say to not work on blocking at all? What I heard him say is just let your body do it naturally. But there really is something to be said for considering the angles at which your arms meet the attack, extended or tight and tucked. Are you trying to further close the gap with the block or open the gap more? How do you block without crossing your center line and making yourself even more vulnerable than you were? Do I grasp and lock the incoming attack or deflect and slip or destroy with force? I can't imagine Ando is advocating to not think at all about defense but rather to consider how it sets up offense.

Exactly right. If you’re only thinking about defense, you’ll eventually get hit. If your defense is linked to your offense, mentally and physically, then you’ll always have a shot. Thanks for having faith in me!🙏🏻

If the other fellow looks to get winded easy, you can let him get tired. If the other guy is way talented keep the arms and elbows tight crowd the guy moving the arms around and hope he hits an elbow. If you can't win focused on him focus on your skills.

Can you talk about offences attacks, it takes a relatively a short time to train offensive fighting then defensive fighting?
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Once you give yourself permission to go after somebody, instincts kick in. If you can train those instincts, even better!

The blocks from classical karate are rather similar to bareknuckle boxing parries. If you want to look at defense classic pugilism is probably some of the best to look towards a street fight as it basically was street fighting for money. While blocks certainly aren't essential, you can use them to great effect. I'd say limb destruction of Paul Vunak fame can certainly end a fight without striking. Just look at when Anderson Silva broke his leg or a classic counter to a bareknuckle jab- the reinforced elbow.

I have found a very effective way to stop an attack consisting of punches and strikes (some people punch so fast that you can't block or 'dodge' in time when in range and in that case you need to know how to move with the blow so that it is less impactive) is to move in close, immobilise, grab or trap the arms of the assailant and use joint manipulation or throwing, it is odd you do not mention this as another alternative to 'dodging' but I guess you're not a Jiu Jitsu or Judo or wrestling sort of guy ?

If your block is an attack, you may not have to block again. 😁

Thanks for this great video. I'll make sure that this advice will be part of me, my subconscious, my reflexes!!! I should warn my friends to never throw again a punch at me like they used to do just to test my reactions ..., they would be testing and tasting my new reactions!!! Kick, break, shatter!

My new website is still "cooking" and will be more about international "recipes"! My name is not Heisenberg! BTW "KICK, BREAK, SHATTER" comes from a Chuck Norris' video about self-defense for women. Very well done! All the women training behind him have such beautiful long nails. They do all the moves without even BREAKING a nail! Ha, ha, ha!
