A great upload by Steve and Alex to show there is a lot more to do than just build up a window in Block ! The cold bridging being sorted by opening up cavity and insulation being inserted and the insulation also being installed throughout the cavity ! The bluebird wall ties being installed correctly! Nice cutting and tidy block work with Steve and Alex cheers for upload guys !

Love your channel and the detail you show in your videos! I'm about to install a Universal Column into brick walls for a lowered ceiling. Engineer has specified metal plates instead of pad stones. Would you advise I lay the plates on a bed of mortar to even out the load? Surely this is better than putting the plates directly on the bricks as I've seen in videos on other channels. Appreciate any advice...

I’m going to attempt to block up the window opening on my garage, it’s single skin but one side will tie into the blockwork, the other side goes into the opening for the door. Should I install an upright first and work to that? If so what kind of upright would be best?

So the original window had bricks in to close the cavity and not cavity closers. Surely that is potential for water ingress ? Perhaps it is an early method before closers?
@florianreclaire508
@florianreclaire508 Жыл бұрын
Im Germany, old houses don't have double layer brick walls. A typical construction could be a brick wall with the thickness of two bricks. Outside the wall would be plastered or you would use a harder and more watertight clinker as the outside facade. When the plaster is in good shape or in the case of the clinker facade the joints are well executed there generally won't be a problem with water getting in. There will be small amounts of water getting into the wall which can easily get out with the sun hitting the wall and making the water evaporate.
@Doug....
@Doug.... Жыл бұрын
@@florianreclaire508 The cavity wall was first introduced in the 19th century, as an alternative to a simple solid wall. Cavity walls became more widespread in the 1920s, and they’ve continued to grow in popularity to this day. The widths of the cavities were originally smaller than they are today, and they were initially without insulation. Typically, the two skins have always been held together with ties made from metal. These ties used to be made from iron, mild steel, or copper, but such materials were prone to corrosion. Wall tie corrosion was first noticed during the 1960s, and from this point, stainless steel became the material of choice for the manufacture of wall ties. Stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion than the earlier metals, and this helps keep the structural integrity of the building intact for longer. Just got this off the internet before Martin made a comment 😜

Cavity closers are a relatively new inovatin, prior to these the cavities were returned and a strip of DPC was installed to prevent water ingress.
