Once you get to doing longer slides... It helps to keep your eyes fixed on small focal point out in front out you. Visualising ahead about three seconds out helps keep balance. Works for manual also. Really works for just about anything. Visualization and practice is the key to success .

As an old person starting to skate, I'm glad I was wearing a helmet when doing these. I didn't follow this progression and just jumped onto the rail in my yard. Definitely 'Zooted' myself backwards, bodyslamming the concrete and hitting the back of my helmet on the floor. Going to try some low curb slides to build back up to the rail.

I did board slides on a curb at a local carpark when I skated regularly in the 1980s. I found them pretty easy to do (including the very first time I tried them.) And they were a lot of fun. Back then, I was doing board slides on rib bones which pretty much everyone had on their boards around that era. I liked the feel of plastic sliding on concrete. Ive never had the opportunity to do this trick on the bare wood of a deck - I guess that would have a different feel to it. Also, the curb that I used was lower and narrower than the one in your video. Your curb looks kind of intimidating. I'm not keen on using wax - that stuff looks dangerous!
@mr_d3adw873 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Old School! Not to hate bc I'm sure you had fun and that's all that matters, but yes the wood feeling is different and wax just makes it more fun. More dangerous..? Yea but skateboarding is dangerous in and of itself. You got to take risks to learn new things and get better. I definitely prefer wax over none, but my first boardslide was without. It's different, kinda like ice skating. Slick and scary if you've never been on the ice, once you get used to it you glide around majestically 😂

Back in the 1980s, I found board slides really easy to do with plastic rib bones. After a big break from skating, I tried them again today with a board with no rib bones and I can't slide at all. The board comes to a complete stop.

Some other tips I've seen here and done myself. Keep your knees bent, body low. Low center of mass is easier to balance than a taller one. Also because when you stand straight up, or back straight, your shoulders and back tend to stay in one place while your legs are still trying to ride a skateboard. Try to keep everything low and forward. B, don't go crazy with the wax at first. Trust me. Maybe even practice it dry, which will suck and you won't slide at all, but at least you'll get the feel of landing on the boardslide. After that my tips would be the same as the video. Start at the end and work your way to longer distances. Have fun skating!! (Edit: also I know I just kinda reiterated some of what he said, but that's because he covered it pretty well. But visualizing my stance as more of a low, bent stance instead of, let me hit this with my legs out like a baby giraffe.)

Hey man.. Question.. when learning tricks stationary i tend to land premo and slam back as if someone swept my legs out from me, i landed on my wrist and it broke like that. Now it freaks me out, how can / should i fall to not break a wrist when falling that way ? Its a real hard slam back no time to really even think about it as im sure you know what i mean.. thanks Any help is appreciated,
@bendegros5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes there is no escape. It happens. Sometimes you are actually less likely to get hurt trying things moving because you have some momentum to roll or slide which helps your slam not be so straight up and down. Also learning how to fall and when you are going to is something that can only be gained from hard won experience. Having injuries and getting back on it is what separates the lifelong skaters from those who quit. We don't keep skating just because we want to. We kind of have too for our mental well being. It can take a little while to get the confidence back but an injury is just a learning experience.
@Jovanni_lopez_135 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this helps but I heard and kinda learn when it ever comes to falling on your harms or hands, if it happens or you know you not going to make it, it's best to not give your arms like strength or like power because when you fall you can break it like that, some skaters say to leave your hands and arms loose almost like when they give you flu shots to relax your arms. Not saying you should like not catch yourself if you fall but if you do thinking your going to fall on your hands try to put less strength into your arms and before attempting relax and take it smooth learning.

@thejaguar17586 жыл бұрын
I dont have a curb like that. All i have is a small waxed ledge.
@bendegros6 жыл бұрын
You can boardslide a ledge but it is much harder to do a long one. You can do short ones where you bonk it off the end. For long ones your front wheels get in the way, that's what makes them harder.
@thejaguar17586 жыл бұрын
Ben Degros yep. This ledge is short and it does not have a drop off end where you can just ride/slide off. Instead, this ledge is gradually becoming smaller, so after sliding for about 1 second, I can no longer slide because the ledge is too short at one corner
