How To Bomproof A Horse In 3 Steps (I GOT KICKED)

It's the number 1 question I get asked- "How do you get your horses so bombproof?" In this Video I show you 3 Exercises that will drastically improve your horses overall calmness and "Bombproof" him. These are some of the secrets to my safe horses and my crazy video clips success.
Although I did get kicked near the end I explain that this particular horse was in season and was simply reacting to a sensitive area being touched which is unacceptable from a finished horse, but not unheard of for a horse just starting her training. Hope you enjoyed this video and subscribe for more content like this!

I seriously love how you show us with a horse that is not finished, like your bowing video! So many people use experienced horses and it’s hard to really know what to do

That's the way to do it. When the horse makes a little mistake, just do it again. The horse will figure it out. As soon as I saw that horse give that little kick, I said to myself, "Good thing he was standing so close to her!" 🙂

@@HorsePerfectI learned to ride most of the time on geldings. They were making me feel secure. Now I 'm old and in the barn most of horses are mares. I discovered how moody they are. But some are really adorable too. Hormonal changes can upset them. They' ve got good days or bad days... Well... just like women. 😆😂😂

Work with the horse first so they're listening to you, respecting you and slightly tired. Then they'll be more likely to stand still and relax.

Hi Sharon, good question. Typically I only do this once or twice with a horse because they tend to remember it really well. The truth is that you can’t do too much of this kind of thing because it just makes the horse even more safe the more you do it!

Quick question, sometimes when I move my hand down the back end of my horse she with turn her hind end towards me possibly to kick, how would you combat that?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
The best way to combat that is to teach your horse to move their hind end away from you. Watch around minute 2 of this video… How To Catch And Halter A Horse! (5 Minutes) 3 Steps To Success!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rofbq3p9j7qapa8

If your horse bolts then start with less energy/speed and build up slowly to fast/high energy.

Funny thing is my mare loves being touched, and scratched, around the same area at the legs as you did. However, my gelding does NOT like it and I'm pretty sure he's not in heat.. Also, don't think that pulling and hanging on their neck like that is such a good idea, you could cause serious damage. Not to mention not a necessary excercise to be fair. In what situation would you feel a need to hang onto her like that?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 жыл бұрын
As a general rule mares are more sensitive around those areas but that’s not to say that there aren’t exceptions to the rule like your mare. I don’t weigh enough to hurt a horse by hanging on its neck and I’m sure people will take their weight into account. Horses are incredibly resistant and a short exposure to strain like I did will not cause any serious injuries. Because of the type of flips and tricks I do with my horses it is actually necessary for me to desensitize them to these things. It may not however be necessary for every horse owner.

Also, its not something you would normally do and thats the point. Doing weird stuff teaches them to stay calm no matter what situation comes up

3:14 The first time you touched her flank she pinned her ears and she moved away and that was an obvious sign that she's giving you to not touch your flank and then you did it again and she pinned her ears and she kicked you so you can't be mad at her for that because she gave you clear signs that she didn't like her flank being touched and I would have also kicked you if you touched my flank. Also for you to just throw that under the rug and say it's because she's a mare and she's in heat that's honestly a little pathetic because geldings also don't like it when you touch their flanks. Why do you think do rodeo bucking bronco horses have flank straps, it's because they don't like their flanks being touched and she gave you obvious signs that she was uncomfortable.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 ай бұрын
1 of course horses naturally are defensive of that area it’s a venerable area 2 we cannot live with a horse that reacts with kicking when we touch them ANYWHERE it’s a bomb waiting to go off. 3 mares are exponentially more reactive and defensive in that area when they are in heat it’s a fact. 4 of course she showed obvious signs but because she was already a few days through training she wasn’t going to kick very hard 5 I can’t believe I’m wasting time responding to ignorant people
