Sam, you do like to live dangerously. Thongs to chainsaw, no roll-over protection on the tractor, I am glad you draw the line at using the wire brush on the die grinder on the tree! (My son uses the roll-over as another way to carry stuff - he has lots of chains draped over the top, and a shovel in a bit of PVC on the side. TBH, not his idea, rather my hubby's, but it certainly comes in handy) Love those olives, though!

Hey Sam, I was watching your video where you were trimming the one olive that you had straight cut. You had found some small clear round balls that you weren't quite sure what they were. I believe those are slug eggs. I find the same in some of my trees .

Wonderful, I was always less aggressive and used blades and pins to avoid cutting off the sap flow; sandpaper seems to do a way better job with the amount and quality of bark.

Cool technic. I'm just wondering if a late spring would be a better time for making that kind of stress to a tree. Anyway, thanks for letting out your little secrets 🙂
@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. As long as the tree is still active so it can repair. Any time in winter I definitely would not. Also mid summer here may prove too much moisture loss. As you say in active spring growth or as I did in mid Autumn when the tree is collecting all its energy in the trunk should be fine 😀

Wowzer! Great info and pioneering stuff. A method that info isn't readily available on really. Very good images on the extent of bark removal and extent of cambium breach for olives ash, even oak I believe. Beech are in the same group bark and growth wise too but they would achieve a different image, maybe a better one who knows. Thanks for showing the die grinder and your decision making process behind the results. Loads of people dont intuitively know this stuff. Important to figure out the optimum time of year for the 'Doecke' method too! :)
@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. Yeah I believe it can be used on a lot of trees as you say. I might try a small section on my apple and see how it goes Also. As you say, too much damage can kill the tree. Not enough and you don't get the bark. Happy medium😀 An the time of year is also crucial as you say. Do not recommend when the tree is dormant. Also if conditions are too hot as it may stress the tree to the point of death. Early Autumn or mid spring when the chance of a frost is gone I think is good.

Nice idea with the sand paper. Do you use a 60 grit or a 120 grit or will any grit of sandpaper do?
@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke3 жыл бұрын
Any that does damage and hopefully clogs less. Note that clog free paper is not clog free 😉😉😊 Used 40 grit mainly

Great job mate! Love the results. Do you think there’s a better time of year to do it? Spring or Autumn?
@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke3 жыл бұрын
I think late Autumn is best. I think if you did it when it warms up too much you may end up with the tree drying out because of the wounds😉. Also deciduous I would only do when they are still active. Never when fully dormant 😀
@fredgrech14983 жыл бұрын
