How to book your BOUNDARY WATERS PERMIT | BWCA

Booking a permit for the Boundary Waters doesn’t need to be confusing. In this video I explain exactly how to book your permit!

We cheated and went thru an outfitter...but we'll be seeing yall 6/25! 3rd trip to the boundary waters. 1986...2004 and now 2022. I know, i know...some of yall have hundreds of trips :). But i'm 18hrs away, least that's the excuse i'm using.

Outfitters are WONDERFUL. Especially when you can get a quick shower there right after a canoe trip! Have tons of fun!

@@shannonparker4239 there are lots of benefits when outfitting! I’ve used a few different outfitting options and they were all great experiences

@@justinstewart3953 You absolutely can ask an outfitter to book your permit. Some people prefer to book their own, even when using an outfitter. We have always booked our own permits, even when using an outfitter.

'Zupp! The Olsen family of Ely Minnesota run canoe country outfitters. Generations of experience. They treat greenhorns with respect and will take care of every detail from airport pickups to permits and transportation to the furthest points motors are allowed where they drop you off and your canoes. The only affiliation I have with them is 50 years of our family receiving great service.

Clarification on solo permits - you can get the money back on the second person, when you pick up your permit ask your outfitter or the ranger station to send the $16 extra dollars back to your credit card. It has to be done the day before or the day of the permit. A solo permit is only $22 ($6 for the permit, $16 per person). For some reason they make you buy a permit for 2 people and then get the refund later.

Clarification from the Forest Service today - when a solo person who's only put one name on the permit gets the permit issued, a refund is automatically sent back to the credit card. So, that's good news.

There is still lots of snow and the lakes are still frozen. Spring is calling our names, but I think everyone is happy for the extra moisture this winter after the dry weather and fires last summer!

We have over 30" of ice on Poplar as of April 19. I'm looking at LEAST May 12th for ice out on the smaller lakes, earlier for big lakes like Saganaga.

book the permit for the number of people going. If more commit later you can add them to your permit.
