Michael Laskin has been a working professional actor for over 40 years in film, television, and the theatre - from SEINFELD to BIG LITTLE LIES and a great deal in between. He has worked extensively off-Broadway, and at some of America’s leading regional theatres, including The Guthrie Theatre, The Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Geffen Playhouse, The Seattle Repertory Theatre, and The Mixed Blood Theatre Company.
Additionally, he was awarded a Fringe First Award at The Edinburgh Festival for playing “Richard Nixon” in TEA WITH DICK AND GERRY, which went on to a successful run at London’s Roundhouse Theatre. Michael also starred in the Canadian premier of the Pulitzer Prize winning drama “Talley’s Folly” and his most recent stage work was the American premiere of the one-person play, ALTMAN’S LAST STAND in Los Angeles. A recipient of a Bush Fellowship with The Guthrie Theatre, he was also awarded a Distinguished Alumnus Award from The University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts.
A graduate of Northwestern University’s theatre department where he received his bachelor’s degree, Michael also has a masters degree in theatre management from The University of Minnesota. Additionally he’s taught acting at USC, UCLA, Queen’s College-Cambridge (UK), The Actors Centre (London), Art Center College of Design, Kennesaw University, the University of Minnesota, the Hawaii International Film Festival, and South Coast Repertory Co.
He’s had the privilege of working with some of the great artists in film and theatre, including Barry Levinson, Stephen Frears, Walter Matthau, John Sayles, Paul Mazursky, Bob Rafelson, Michael Langham, Robert Duvall, Roy Dotrice, and many others.

If you have a lack of confidence, you have a surplus of fear. Do some soul searching and figure out what you're really afraid of. Is it losing something you think you need? Being exposed? Being ridiculed, rejected, or ignored? Look for people or past experiences that might've triggered or added to these feelings and deal with them if you can. Beware of "needing" things from people. Whatever it is that you "need" will make you its slave. Finally, make an effort to love people more and fear them less. Engage with people and try to help them out. Not only will you find that no one is perfect, but that you can help fill the gaps in others. Ironically, the best way to feel better about yourself is to look to the needs of other people.

Great advice. In the context of writing or acting or directing money can be a big factor. Yes, there's a creative need but you also need to make money and that fear of not impressing viewers/readers, getting the audition, the job etc can cause fear that translates into a bad performance because creativity is a spiritual need and making money a practical need. Left right brain stuff that collides badly. It's definitely an artform to ignore the practical pressures and focus only on the creative.

@@notbloodylikely4817 Exactly. I find that I always do the best auditions when I don't care about getting the job. Either because I'm sure I won't, or because I don't need it. Then I am free to play around freely without thinking of the consequences.

Competence=Confidence. If you've done the work and know the ins and outs, you'll be able to accurately predict the outcome and this is the definition of Confidence.

This is only half right. Sure, competence can enhance confidence, but once one is competent, confidence is secondary. Rather, confidence is what you need to believe that your training and practice will result in competence, otherwise, its easy to believe training and practice won't make any difference. If an athlete is not confident that wind sprints will improve his performance on the field, he would not bother.

14 pages is unnecessary for casting. You know if they’re a maybe in the first 30 seconds if even that. It’s not all about the look but that’s at least fifty percent of it. The only time that’s not the case is if someone comes in and does a completely different version that makes the production rethink the character, like with Brad Garrett in Everybody Loves Raymond. They were originally looking for a Danny DeVito type since that’s what Raymond’s brother is like in real life.
