Being able to see the good in the bad is a valuable life skill that will improve your client's emotional resilience
Research studies on gratitude have found that people who are encouraged to reflect regularly on what they can be grateful for enjoy increased alertness, enthusiasm, optimism and energy.
So, in this video I'll share a useful therapeutic exercise you can use to help your clients feel better.

All your videos are remarkable and I'm so grateful to you for the untiring effort that you put in all of them to make them relevant for all kinds of people. Thank you so much. I would like to request you to kindly make a video on emotional intelligence. Having to face unforseen situations gives me the jitters, it can be something very trivial like having guests over or upsetting somebody unintentionally.

One combination is to think of one thing you've achieved, one thing you're grateful for and one lesson you've learned.

An exercise that I thought up & find useful when I am feeling het up about something is to ask myself how I might feel about whatever it is that is bothering me in five years time. Of course in many cases it is true that from the distance of five years whatever is worrying us now will have passed & been forgotton. When I realise that is likely to be the case, it makes me feel theres not much point in getting stressed about the issue now. Even if what we are worried about is that we have been told we have to have a major operation for cancer, (which I have had to twice,) it leads us to remember that we are all going to die anyway & the important thing is to enjoy what we can each day we are alive. When faced with being told that there was a two out of three chance I was going to die very soon it made me regret all the time I had spent pointlessly worrying. Suddenly things like drinking water, seeing the daylight the next morning, or even feeling air moving into my chest became very precious experiences, like valuable jewels to be appreciated & cherished.

Nice to hear a creative approach to gratitude. The concept of imagining the what if the patient had it worse. When people tell me I have nothing to be depressed about and list all the people who are worse off than I am, it just makes me sadder, as my empathy kicks in, and I end up feeling worse than before. But I do try to feel gratitude for what I have that I might not have had under different circumstances. That is relevant to me and helps me appreciate not just what I have to be grateful for but also the conditions that have allowed me to have things to be grateful for. You have expressed this so concisely and beautifully. I hope others will take note. Thank you for this affirming video.

We all have problems, but some are worse than others, and looking at history has given me some perspective. There are many, and different and new kinds of problems today which need sorting, some of which the internet and our usage of it is responsible for. However life used to be truly harsh in the west like it is elsewhere now, up until post ww2, and many of us have gone a little bit weak, myself included. War and violent crime have dropped massively, living standards greatly improved, but the news won't tell you this because it's not new, and it's not sensational and generated negative emotions that gets clicks and reacts and attracts advertising revenue. If you have internet access, you're possibly likely to be moaning and arguing on the internet, acting like High Society Toffs of not so long ago, complaining that We Live In A Society. Negativity Bias which has evolved into humanity is responsible for a lot of our ills, as is Groupthink, confirmation bias, other cognitive biases, and logical fallacies, the main ones I've spotted being 'appeal to emotion' 'slippery slope' and 'motte and bailey' fallacies. We even do appeal to emotion to ourselves on the individual level!

What does your cancer patient say to himself in light of this? What if the worst really is imminent? Grateful for past joys? (I only find that makes the present seem more sad..) Really life sucks sometimes. No way around it. Suffering is inescapable, according Gautama Buddha anyway.

Gratitude is super cute and fluffy and ALL THE RAGE right now, but IMO, masking feelings with "find something to be grateful for" is a road to madness rather than resilience.

It’s not about masking or denial. It’s about refocusing one’s attention on the positive instead of constantly dwelling in the negative.

I find it does help me to remember the 3rd world countries and how much they suffer. I'll never forget a video on TV I watched as a teenager of people in Africa swatting flies in a big swatter repeatedly and then they squished them all them up to make a fly pie
