How to Break 80 - Stop Thinking About Swing Mechanics

Contact/email: matt@golfsidekick.com for collaboration/partnership opportunities This is my first round back after my life changing on-course lesson and SWING MECHANIC lesson with Eric Chong. This is how to break 80 with swing mechanics in your mind and playing a training round. We did hit some practice balls after the main shots. These types of rounds won't go toward handicap but you can see how much easier it is for me to reduce my handicap by playing the same more familiar course over and over.
It was hard playa. i have never had swing mechanics in my mind on the course. The first few holes you can see are a disaster.

but we have to put the mechanics aside eventually on the course and just trust the LONG TERM process of it happening over time at the range. You can't fix a swing or implement mechanics when there is a target.
This is very hard to do and it took me until the 6th hole to just say F** it and start playing golf.
I also focused on hitting the sweet spot with my putter.

Better to remember a process than a feeling as feelings are something we experience in the present moment usually following a process we have just gone through. By returning to a process such as hitting with the 2 elastic bands on the putter you may feel today your head has to stay still in order to hit the centre. The key is not to try and keep the head still the next time you go out but instead use the elastic bands again and see what feelings/experience the process will give you this time to achieve the task. Feelings are experiences in the present moment the mere attempt at trying to remember is looking into the past Hope this helps 👊🏻

When I first started out golfing I would hit well at the range but seemed to just draw blank standing over the ball at the course. It’s definitely easy to forget everything you’re practicing while playing. Standing behind the ball before my shot and practice swings at slow tempo have definitely helped me out as well as your channel

A few months ago I also decided to take swing lessons, I'm 14 hcp. A few days after the first one I came back to the range and shanked the first 100 balls... But I kept implement the feel of the new mechanics and now it's slowly but surely better. Keep going Chief !!!!

People need to find 2-3 clubs that they practice with more than others in order to break 90, 80, etc. I’ve only broken 80 a few times and I started playing for real about 5-6m ago. But back to the solution: I’ve made sure that my PW, 7 and 4hybrid go fairly straight all the time. I’ve also noticed that when I switched to primarily using my PW 100yds in, my score got a lot better. A lot of people regardless of skill will see certain lies and use LW, SW or GW as well. But because a lot of us aren’t pros or people who have forever to dial in these clubs, we can’t consistently get the result we want. So take my advice, pick one club 100yds in to the green and dial it in. For me it was my PW. Outliers: if you are in a green-side bunker, you need to go SW but that’s a very specific shot. Or if you are in a lie where you need to really get it up quick to get over a peak, you’ll need more loft. I think you all get what I’m saying though. Spend less time practicing with all of your clubs for a bit and get your bread and butter down.

This is gold and I 100% believe this too. Build the backbone of your bag on 4-5 clubs
@alanwaterworth6464

Yep, totally agree with this. I use PW from 100m in, for every shot right down to green side chip shots and can usually chip it stiff. Improvements in my putting (using my back as a pivot point rather than putting with my arms) have massively improved my putting consistency in recent weeks too, taking 8 x 1 putts, 9 x 2 putts and only 1 x 3 putt in my last round, so 29 putts. The only problem is that awkward 35-40m pitch, when I get uncertain and sometimes switch clubs to SW, often resulting in a puffy and coming up short. So now I hit fairway a lot more, but miss greens a bit, but can still get up and down to save par, or bogie more often. So next is the mid irons and more GIR work.
@hawk4813
@hawk4813 3 жыл бұрын
@@alanwaterworth6464 ya the other thing I’ve been doing that I realize isn’t “the right way” is if I’m off the green on the fringe, I putt it. Obviously not from super far, but the goal at a distance of around 20-25yds in when the grass is super short or on the edge in the rough is to get that ball as close as possible. Even if it’s in rough about 3-4in before green I’ll putt sometimes, it’s a feel thing obviously. Doesn’t matter how you do it though. If you like your 8iron bump and run, do it, if you like your putter, do it, if you like to chip with a PW, do it. For me I know my best shot to get it in the hole in two shots is my putter from short grass. My dad makes fun of me all the time because it’s a shot most people would chip, and then my ball is within 6ft and I took no risk of catching it flush and sailing it off the green.

Mine are driver, 9 wood, 6, 8, pw, putter. Sometimes, this is my bag for a round of golf. Normally, with a full bag, I shoot in mid 80s; with my small bag, I'll come close. The best part is, I'm usually in the fairway and I don't have to take penalty strokes for lost balls.

I have been getting lessons this year and the biggest thing I had to do was let go of my old swing ideas. My assumption was, if my ideas were working, I wouldn't have sought out a pro for help and I need to trust the process. For months I focused on just what we talked about in the lessons. A huge key is he only gave me one mechanic every 2 weeks, and if I hadn't master it, we'd work on it again in the next lesson. For most of the season I played some very mediocre golf. My high scores dropped about 5-7 strokes, but I wasn't scoring lower, just playing very consistent with my bad and good scores within 5 strokes. However about a month ago it clicked and I started scoring better. What happened is the mechanics we had worked on finally started to settle in. Each lesson was like building a house, starting with the foundation and working our way up to the paint and finishes. When i was just playing ok, and wasn't scoring, I was looking at an unfinished house with just the foundation and walls being built. When he felt the first mechanic was in grained and I wasn't thinking about it, he added another mechanic. As we continued, more and more things were added until now I am starting to see glimpses of the finished product. I'll be taking lessons for the next year, and I am excited coming out of winter to see where my game ends up.

That's the big thing here. I want to remove pain from my swing and the next day after golf. Then I want to put the ceiling on the high end of my scores. I want to know I can just maximum shoot an 80. I want to hit shots that i want to hit, not the shots that incidentally come out. I want to be the ball striker sometimes not the scrmabling man all the time. It will all take time

I used to wake up sore and stiff after golf. Covid got me to look for a change in my swing. I found Tom Saguto Golf on KZbin and started from the beginning. He breaks down the swing and is very easy to follow. I'm much older than you and I now practice 3-4 days a week for several hours and play a round or two also. Guess what Playa, no more pain. His method eliminated the cause for back pain that most golfers have because they're taught the wrong swing. In any case good luck, can't wait for the next video.

Lol keep it up; I feel like although I am way behind you score wise I am improving because of your videos and taking lessons and most importantly, seeing the game for what it is. I have made it harder than it should be. I am in my own way. I hold the key to being good. And in learning this, I have learned that it is no different in anything else in life. Our brains get in our own way. Our emotions. I think in golf and anything else, we should feel, acknowledge, and make a statement to ourselves as to how we will move on, and keep going. Love ourselves, love the game, enjoy, and all will be well. Cheers Matt, you've made a difference to me. A

Stop trying to do EVERYTHING on the course. You can't fix every item at the same time. It is too much muscle memory to correct all at once. Pick ONE thing every time you go out that you want to correct and keep with that ONE thing through the round and next round until it is muscle memory. I spent all summer in the US fixing my swing for my driver. I'd miss left as I fixed my downswing then I'd push it out right as I adjusted my swing path then I'd not even use my driver as I lightened the club to a fairway wood to work on tempo. You're going to hurt yourself trying to make jerky reactions to fix things mentally. Just focus on ONE item at a time and realize that this is going to take 4 months or more to really commit to muscle memory. I love that you're doing this and it is awesome seeing your progress. Don't hurt yourself for our benefit!

Your lesson at the end is huge. I play with alot of randoms and they sometimes will try to give me swing advice: " hey, I saw something in your swing can I give you some advice?" Everytime I politely tell them no. I dont even want to hear the advice as I am working with someone else and dont even want the thought of what they say to creep in to my swing

No idea where people get the idea that they have any idea about the golf swing of others. That is a big part of why I am documenting the journey of swing change. i will highlight why my swing ended up the way it was. The concept of it and how it got there. The wsing its not really a mechanical move, it's a conceptual problem that we turn into a swing that is either helpful, or hindering. You are perfectly correct to tell them to butt out

Great vid. Nailed a few things for me. Most notably. The tension in my swing, and tendency to sway. Both are round destroying. I can usually get a good groove with the irons. Always feel less pressure with them. It’s the driver for me every time. Soft firearms is a good thought. For irons I always think “dead” hands. Helps them naturally release from momentum of the swing into the back of the ball. I try to let them just go with the flow back and through.

Your description at @20 minutes… I can attest that’s true, your goal is right on. I worked on this the last half of last season and through the off-season in my sim. I picked up 12-15 yards through my irons and my face control is soooo much better. Now I’m really hoping to bring it all out to the course this season. My goal is to get down to a steady 6 from a bouncy 8-10. Milo Lines and George Gankas are good teachers of this easy on the back and powerful swing style.

Most people are just out to preserve the status quo. As long as you're not harming anyone else, and moving toward a righteous goal, then the heat you get from others is probably a good thing. Just found your channel...fun and educational...and well done with the graphics. Subbed! I remember going through the process of breaking 100, then 90, then 80, and finally 70. I started playing when I was 12 and within a year I had broken the 100 and 90 barrier. Then it took close to 3 years to break 80. Then I took several breaks from golf after high school, so I didn't play much for about a decade besides the occasional "fun round" with friends. Then I got serious about playing again and within 2 years I broke par and 70 for the first time on the same day (2 under 69). Two weeks later I did it again. I still don't break 70 regularly (maybe a few times a year) but often enough to keep me coming back.

I share your exact same issues. I swayed off of the ball then slid forward, hitting a weak fade far too often. I also had the same pain in my right side as well as my back. I watched your lessons and the little pitch and punch drill really clicked for me. I went out and tried it and it made a huge difference. I had been figuring out some of these things on my own for a while but your video gave me the final pieces. I'm very excited for the season ahead!

I took the ideas from your video to the range the same afternoon and hit the ball better than I have ever hit it in my life. Straight and strong. Strike in the middle of the face with good compression almost every time. For me the biggest keys were weight on the left side to keep from swaying back, good shoulder and hip turn, then staying behind the ball through impact. Bam! I had always been sliding forward with my hands getting ahead of the ball and the clubhead trailing behind. Result was a weak push fade. Not any more! Thanks for the video!

really been loving your videos Matt. shot my first 9 holes back and i just went out there with some warmup range balls before just to see what would happen. Two big things you've mentioned in the videos that helped me: 1. On my local course, i was playing the wrong tee box so i moved to the front red tees, didn't lose near as many golf balls as normal 2. Don't focus on too many changes. I have been watching a lot of golf videos but the only big things i wanted to implement were a change in my grip, and a bit slower swing speed to work on tempo. Overall, my short game needs work but other than that, the few changes and leaving my ego at home allowed me to hit some really nice shots. I found my favorite fairway finder club that really allows me to chill out on the course and not worry about huge slicing..... Oddly enough, i used to have a big slice, today i had a bit of a hook. Still had a good round though. Can't wait to get back out

I like your channel and it’s very relatable to us golf amateur. As we get older and struggling for distance, our swing mechanics will unconsciously fall into the so called “cancer swing”. I saw your lesson with impact golf and suddenly realised that was the movement that I was taught 26 years ago by a golf pro and totally forgotten about it. Like the option you took for a lesson and go back to basics again. Like the way you have mentioned it that the next morning you feel bad for your body and very much the same thing happening to me as well.

Keep up the good work Matt. I’m on the journey of swing changes as well and it is a process for sure. I’m in the same boat where I have a back injury that flares up because of my bad swing mechanics and swinging too hard. I’ve taken a few lessons this year and in the spring I plan to take some more. My issues are similar to yours where I sway in the backswing and then lunge at the ball leading to a huge slice or pull hook. I’m trying to work on keeping the head still in the backswing and ensuring I accelerate through impact instead of starting the swing too quickly. I really liked the chip, pitch, punch drill from your lesson and it’s really helped. Maybe soon I will no longer be a “la-hoo za-hurr.... loser!”

Refreshing to see you (a good playa) going through changes. This is what I do a lot, but I go all in and try to keep the "new" swing for every swing on the course. This naturally means one or two truly awful round shooting 10-20 above my handicap. I'm used to it. When you're on the range have a swing thought. You're allowed one for backswing and one for downswing. The one that gives a good result, stick at it and take it to the course 👍 Trust the process and you'll be fine.

All that being said, isn't the point of the EVNROLL putter that it hits evenly from toe/center/heel? Why choose that one for the rubber bands?
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 3 жыл бұрын
Helo playa, I am not a coach I am merely allowing you to explore yourself and find your golfing self. The EVNROLL may be good for that, but I found there is no point to having a nice putter if you are not hitting the sweet spot because then it doesn't matter what line you pick, it will not work because you need a consistent roll. There is no way that putter rolls as well off the center of the face. Since I learned to hit the sweet spot better, it's a total game changer

Amazing bunker shot! I remember in one of your videos to open the club face. I went into three bunkers on Saturday; Ball 1 I forgot to open the face the ball come out but did not go far at all endded up in the frenge. Ball 2 did not open the face again (really forgot) ended up thinning the ball and it flew out like a bebe haha 😂, was able to get up and down for a double funny thing was I needed to open of the face to get over a palm tree and that's when it clicked 🤔 OPEN THE FACE IN THE BUNKER. Ball 3 opened the face splashed the sand and got out and about 7ft from the hole, missed the par put but only by an inch. Thanks PLAYA!!!!

This happened to me on the third hole, opening round of a tournament. (Had just had a pro session) My swing just went flat, I could barely seem to hit the ball. I had forgotten to make up lag (flat)concentrating on mechanics had forgotten natural swing and 'feel'.. Now playing best golf of my life.....a playa!

I went for a lesson recently to improve my shot flight, it was a very high flight with a soft landing but useless in windy conditions and distance control (all or nothing swing). The Pro showed me that I was leaning my weight back onto my rear foot and gave me drills to practice to improved weight distribution. It destroyed my swing for about 2 or 3 weeks. Now, after committing and working at it, I have a much more useable swing, distance control and shot shaping. It is worth getting lessons but you have to be willing to tear down and rebuild.

A lot of people get to the point where it gets hard and they stop working. That is what I want to show. You can't just give up and blame the pro. That's where a lot of this BAD PRO stuff comes from. We take what they say,, add our bias and ego and then destroy the good work. We wait 6 months between lessons and then give up by blaming them for destroying our swing.

Such good advice not telling your friends. Sadly I did and had some of the most stressful rounds with them giving me terrible swing advice as I inevitably crumbled under the pressure I'd put myself under as a result. Lesson learned - best to work in the shadows!

You'll notice on the channel how there may be a few people who may comment about 'the direction of the channel' and me 'losing my audience' and 'what made your channel good...' stuff, but this is exactly why you cannot tell people you're trying to improve. You'll be held hostage by others expectations. That is a sad way to live life. The least self aware people are the ones who will bring you down. And they unfrtunately are the ones closest to you because it's even more painful to see someone you know so well trying to improve and become the playa they were meant to be. It reflects badly on yourself if someone similar to you can take life by the balls whle you idly sit by and watch the world pass. Just like if people think my channel changes (which it won't because the whole point is to SHOW people what happens at every stage), then they should move on, similar to how negative 'friends' or family members become a prior chapter in life. If people want to hold me hostage or anyone else trying to improve and have more fun in their own way, hostage, to their insecurities, then it's time to move along. It's simple. Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better. And you'll probably realize, like me, that the people that are hindering your progress, will be left behind. Work in the shadows playa. It's quiet, cool, tranquil and there are very few amateur pro's there

So many ways to skin a cat. Check Brian Sparks "easiest swing" (for seniors). His head moves about a foot back and through. But, he's 67 years old. At your age, you should be able to maintain a fairly steady head, despite the pressures it may put on your neck and back. As you age, that may change. Your swing looks so much smoother to me now than before your lesson. Good luck with making the change a natural part of your golf swing. Great videos!

Hey Playa, you’re set up & swing mechanics is not the problem with your swing. The problem is that you need to start squaring the club sooner as your arms work down. Need to have the feeling of turning you left hand down then rotate to the ball. This is why you come over it and pull it or cut it. Colin Morikawa is a good example of what I am suggesting. What his wrist start to roll and work down at the top of his swing. This will be a game changer for you! Good luck and thanks for the content!

Golf Sidekick you’re welcome & I understand that it’s hard to grasp in writing. Would be much easier visually. Bottom line, you need to start squaring the face sooner. This will allow you to rotate to & through the ball like you want. You rely on squaring face with your hands too much now, that is why you get the inconsistency. All the best in your swing journey playa!

Number 1. Do not keep score when your implementing new swing changes. Number 2. Focus on only one thing each time your playing. Number 3. Keep short game thoughts separate from the swing when your playing. Number 4. Have fun with small victories.. P.S. it takes pros months to make a grip change!! It will come but don’t focus on instant results but rather the process!! Trust me I know I was in the same position you are and now I’m 60 and a +2 and practice hrs on stance and grip always trying to stay true to the process not the score!

i suffer the same swing compensation- one key "tell" I have found is my relative balance at the finish position. If I'm struggling to maintain balance I have slid during the swing and my center of gravity has changed. If I stand tall and effortlessly I know I have rotated instead. Good luck with it

You have lovely natural rhythm, and a very loose (body not tense at all) swing. Some people just have it to begin with while most don't, lucky you, but most will never break 80. Hope you continue, I reckon you'll get to single figures soon enough. PS: You kept hitting to the left, because that's exactly where the line across your toes was aiming. Watch the video.
