Tshepo (spelled wrong in the video!) joined me at Kyalami Country Club to learn ways to save some strokes and how to break 90 in golf. He is a constant 90's shooter who can't seem to break through into the 80's and become a graduate of the class of 89.
In this round, and with a deep chat after the round (which I should have recorded), we discussed where he needs improvement.
1. Putting inside 4 feet
2. Lag putting in two maximum
3. Setting up the most comfortable and stress free approach distance
4. Generally avoiding big trouble by not playing with the ego
5. Committing to his plan 100%
6. Swinging through the ball and not at it

The focus on this channel will be STRESS-FREE GOLF and choosing the most stress-free shot possible in any given situation. Why get tense and angry playing the game you love? Some days you're going to score well, other days you're going to have to grind, but make the grind tactical and fun.
Now Tshepo did shoot 99, but he also told me he was hating golf just a few weeks before and thought of packing it in. He told me he felt so relaxed on the course because he could see a new way to plan and even though his score wasn't really what he wanted, he felt in control of his emotions and his experience on the course.
This is so important is to always have fun and feel in control. As soon as we lose control of our emotions and reactions

I can't believe golf pros don't teach this way. Especially to people who have struggled forever and just want to get more enjoyment out of the game. I wish I was taught this when I was 30 years old I wouldn't have quit for the better part of 20 years.

Exactly on point, all the slow-mo video, position / plane voodoo and launch monitor numbers are fine for the pros who practice 40+ hours a week but for people with limited time course management is going have far more impact. Then I think you can actually start to enjoy and 'play' golf, get to the point it's stress-free and everything feels easy then start to challenge yourself a little bit, as soon as the stress returns then back off a little bit back to stress-free mode. Improving all the time. This is how you actually learn golf.

When you say quit for 20 years, I take it you're playing again sir? If not, please do! More fun, more of the time, more guys on the course, more often. Good golf pros will show you how to manage a course. The conmen are overhauling swings for repeat business when a simple mental shift would change everything.

@@2k10clarky Love this comment. That whole slow mo breaking down the whole swing into segments and having dudes trying to get into 7 different positions when they stand on a tee box with a 200 yard carry, and looking to the machine for the voodoo readings really hurts me deep inside.

@Keep It In The Fairway I understand that but I took 15-20 lessons in my life and not once did the Pro mention course management or hey maybe try and use an iron off the tee. It was all position up top or pronate your hands, even had one Pro yell at me because I couldn't get it. Just saying I wish I started doing this when I first started playing golf.

Golf Sidekick yeah my best score in my life was some thing like 94. And do you know what? I figured it only when was counting the card of my wife and mine after the course and at the car. I remembered that I play easy this day, I was focus to just put it in the alley and help my girlfriend, because it was her first 18. We had fun and it was a new course that I never played before. I will practice my driver, and play my iron 3 and hybrid 4 more this summer. I will go down as 90 and prolly less. Driver was a struggle for me since I hit so hard that I loose all my balls and I can have about 4-5 penalty shots every game. But I don’t feel comfortable with it so...that bitch will stay in the trunk for the official round!! He will come with me only if I am comfortable to put in the alley 80 % of the time.

I am definitely the best golfer I know that has never broke 90. I'm shocked when I tally the card up after every round. I'm like "no way! I had 5 pars, a birdie, and was hitting 75% of fairways". I have been in Poland for the past ten months on an exchange program. I used to play golf all the time starting in April, but here, golf is almost nonexistent. The last time that I played was in September and that was in the Czech Republic, where I got my butt kicked by that golf course. I have always been so frustrated with my game because I can play decent, just a few bad holes will always screw me up for the rest of the round. My short game is the best part of my game and I can’t drive the ball. My irons are normally decent. My ego was always the problem, wanting to hit the ball a mile and make par every hole like my friends. Looking back I wasn’t understanding the process. I focused way too much on my score. I knew exactly what my score was when I sank that putt on the 18th green. But no more, I can do this I just have to focus and relax. Watching your videos, I am feeling confident that I can get my score down into the 90s within a few rounds. I’ve been itching to play for the past month. I’ll let you know how I play when I get back!!

Just for fun yesterday, I decided to try some stress free golf. On a typical Par 4 I would hit 5-iron off the tee, then lay up to 80-90 yards with a 8-9 iron. A 54 degree wedge into the green often left me 15-25 feet for par, and a 85 percent chance of a two-putt bogey. Make a great approach and some of those bogeys become pars. Add 2 or 3 pars on the Par 3’s and 5s and the scorecard can easily go sub-90. Matt, you’ve got lots of fans here in western Canada. Please keep doing what you’re doing, guru!

Super long winter in Canada and it's tonight it's actually - 25, that's a real thing! Thanks for posting Matt and I'm a Beleiver for sure, love splitting long approaches now, it is SO stress free that you hit that first one to your 'spot' (whatever distance you like to approach from) almost always, and then the next one is on or near the green. T bone could save a lot of strokes simply with some putting practice, and I'm sure after he sees this he'll agree, with his quality chipping he could have a lot of one putt holes (up and downs) but needs that confidence in putter. My target 2024. Breaking 90. Currently i hit my course par of 95 strokes. Love these vids from the Golf Messiah. Would some more of Golf Sidekick helping someone break their par. If every course had a Golf Sidekick caddy for Playa's, pace of play on the course would be pretty fast.

My dad has never shot in the 80s but shot a 78 once. I saw it. Crazy shit. I’m not looking for low round but rather more consistency. I’ve found with course management I can shoot in the low 90s without playing much, and about the same with more practice with little course management. Excited to combine the two. Lowest 18 is 83 and lowest 9 is 37. Looks like this guy just needs more short game. That’s how I went from 100s to low 90s quickly. His long game is better than mine was

I practiced a lot- for several months- and went from not being able to break 95 to shooting an 84 at a full size municipal course. I swung easy and made sure I was on plane, releasing nice, and willing to let the club do its job. Two months later I shot a 71 on a hilly 7,000 yd. par 72 course. Same philosophy. I had a boss I was teaching, but he could not get the idea of a nice release, until one day he swung easier and then released nice and shot a 40 on 9 holes at a full side course.

Im glad I found this video, me and my mate hit the course for the 1st time and made all of these mistakes trying to go for the highlight reel. It only paid off twice in the entire round (though they were 👌🏻) and had us in the rough the majority of the time. The green strategy would have helped our scorecards from being destroyed aha. Its also great to see "normal" people playing golf as the example, its much more relateable! I appreciate the commentary too, SUBBED!

T-bone reminds me of me..😎 one of the best videos I've seen (Kukup still #1) I hv had this thot of breaking the last shot into two strokes before but never did it BUT I am doing it now.. I would normally fail miserably on the 2nd shot, over-stressing the Hybrid/wood. Now I JUST try to get the best distant that I can get from my favourite 6-iron & the next shot would just be a short iron shot.. Thx Matt ..

Hey Matt, after watching your 6+6+6 system for breaking 80, I made a 3+4+5+6 system for breaking 90. It is: up & down par x 3, GIR par x 4, one chip/pitch & two putts bogey x 5, and vacation (double bogeys) x 6. Total: 89. I printed this and clipped it to my scorecard, and checked after every hole. Since I only have to GIR for 4 holes in total, it is also stress-free golf. In a word, you are inspiring, and encouraged people like me to think, to use my brain when I golf. Thank you.

Again, these thoughts are precisely the things most golfers need to focus on. Not collagen injected drivers and $600 putters that look like Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack designed. Tsepho does one thing really well; He rotates through the shot like a champ. His flying right elbow and lack of a consistent turn going back cause his 2 way miss. I'm guessing your tips for him going forward revolve mostly around strategy, which is going to help him significantly. Part of that strategy might need to include hitting 3/4 shots to limit his backswing a touch and get his shot trajectories tighter.BTW, I see your Golfholics stab. Excellent work. Can't get enough buddy.

OurHouse Tshepo here 🙂 Please explain to me what you mean by the flying right elbow. On the downswing?
@OurHouseChannel
@OurHouseChannel 5 жыл бұрын
@@tletsoalo No problem! You have a follow through that I am jealous of. It's awesome. On your backswing, your right elbow comes up high. It gets away from the right side of your body. It doesn't have to stay tucked in or tight, but it "flies" up. It looks like you take the club away first and your shoulders don't turn with the club. Something to try would be to keep the club in front of your chest as much as possible. I think you are getting the club and your hands "stuck" and lagging behind you on your turn through. Just focus on a shorter backswing where your hands stay in front of your chest more. Should result in more consistent and predictable trajectory.
@tletsoalo
@tletsoalo 5 жыл бұрын
OurHouse Thanks man. That makes sense...need to sort this putting out first 🤬
@OurHouseChannel
@OurHouseChannel 5 жыл бұрын
@@tletsoalo I wanted to add; I'm not a pro and I'm not an expert. Matt's strategies and course management are far more important to improve my game as well as others, this was just an observation. I typically don't like to focus on mechanics and getting my swing or anyone else's to look textbook. In this case however I feel it applies directly to course strategy and better play. When your hands get "stuck" lagging behind you, there are 3 things that generally happen. 1 is that the club stays behind and the ball goes right. 2 is you compensate by flipping at it and the ball hooks left. 3 is that you happen to time it right and the ball goes relatively straight. This ties in to game management because a 1 way miss is much easier to play with than a 2 way miss. If the vast majority of your shots go straight or to the right, you know your miss is only 1 direction. If you hit it equally left, straight, and right, you can't play to a safe zone because you have no idea which way youre likely to miss. By going to a 3/4 backswing, you have a better chance of keeping the club in front of you and not getting stuck. It should make you far more predictable and therefore, lead to better course management.
