Hey Simon, thanks for sharing these useful tips on your channel:) After years of calisthenics training, I arrive slowly to weight training, as I see the benefit that incorporating both brings. But I also have to be mindful because of some pains. Please keep posting videos on strength training!

Im so happy for this video! I had so many thoughts, questions about this topic in my head, because i was never sure that i do the breathing right. The videos i watched and articles i read gave only simple answer, inhale eccentric, exhale concentric, but i couldnt do that in every situations, so i thought that im doing something wrong or anatomically something is wrong with me :D But Simon, you provided thorough explanation, thank you :) During bent arm plache hold, i still have problem with breathing, because my chest feels so very tight, but maybe it is because i need to get stronger, cus i can barely do it, maybe the form isnt perfect either.

If you want to increase your tendency for deep breathes you can do Pranayam it helped me building stamina and do exercise for longer duration without running.

For some reason, when doing squats and going a bit heavier, or should I say closer to failure, I oftentimes get dizzy at the end of the set and squat is the only exercise that causes this. I breath normally as with any other exercise, but squats are the odd one for me.

the purpose of breathing is to resupply your muscles with energy so i'd argue the point of holding your breath. i couldnt get past a plateau at one point and easily broke through it with he help of shallow diaphragmic breaths as it slowed the rate of exhaustion. if you've already got the strength and endurance sure you dont need to breathe but thats not the point here is it? breating during every rep if you're doing fast reps will lead to hyperventilation so thats something to note.. i'm more interested in hearing your thoughts on breathing techniques for faster recovery during rest periods though, not a lot of quality videos on that

Strength training is not an aerobic activity. Your muscles get all the oxygen they need from your blood whether you hold your breath for a reps at a time or not. This is why you’re not gasping for air with resistance training compared with aerobic activities like running. Aside from bracing, I don’t think any breathing technique is gonna to improve strength performance compared with using what feels comfortable for the individual. Regarding rest periods, just breathe at a comfortable pace. I don’t believe any fancy breathing technique will make a meaningful difference. Once again, strength training tends not to be limited by the cardiovascular system.

I think holding breath in sticking point is natural. I do it even without knowing it🤣
