Hi Irene, I’m a big fan of your channel! It’s been super helpful for me on my swimming journey. I have a quick question for you. When you exhale during freestyle swimming, do you recommend exhaling completely or just half of your air before you inhale? I’ve seen some conflicting advice online.

Hi, thank you! That is a great question. You see conflicting advice online because everyone has a different definition of exhaling completely. The best answer I can give you is - breathe the same way as when you're running. When you sit still and breathe out normally, you never completely exhale all your air. You can try this and see if after breathing out the regular amount you still have a little bit more you could breathe out. That's what I like to call "reserves". When swimming, breathe out the regular amount, and never breathe out the reserves. Shallow breaths are more tiring. Hope this helps!

So helpful, tysm! I have trouble breathing on my right side and feel like I wait a second for my body to float back up to the surface to take a breath. Anyone else feel this way?

I was wondering during the breathing cycle, should you look slightly behind you, too take a breathe?.
@RinaAnna_Swimming8 ай бұрын
I would just look straight to the side, but if it's slightly behind you that's okay too

@@RinaAnna_Swimming my problem is when i try to take a breath on my right side my left arm drops or starts to pull while im talking a breath ! It feels like i am off balance or falling in the water 🤔
@qais-dy2fu8 ай бұрын
@@RinaAnna_Swimming so that means i was rotating my head very early to take a breath it should be somewhere after the pull phase .. i guess i rotate my head at the beginning of pull phase
@RinaAnna_Swimming8 ай бұрын
Oh yes that's a common thing :) Think about reaching out forward with your left arm, stretch it out as much as you can. Use a kickboard to get used to keeping your arm out longer and do lots of kicking on the side with and without a kickboard.

Start rotating your head in the second half of the pull phase

While doing backstroke kicking my head goes under water but I can’t breathe out😢
@RinaAnna_Swimming8 ай бұрын
If your head goes underwater unintentionally during backstroke kick, you may have to kick harder, even out your body position, remember to keep looking straight up at the ceiling to maintain correct head position. Good luck, you got this!
