Hey Team! Proper breathing is essential for exercise because oxygen acts as fuel for our muscles. So, it follows that the more intensely we engage our muscles, the more oxygen we need. Focusing on effective breathing can help ensure oxygen gets to your muscles most efficiently. A focus on breath also helps keep you calm, alert, and in control, so you can channel all your efforts into actively engaging the right muscles. As a result, this increases movement precision, which leads to improved performance. So, here’s a few breathing basics to remember the next time you’re lifting weights:
• Take big, deep inhales through your nose as much as possible, engaging your diaphragm to help ensure you’re getting the most oxygenated air down to your belly.
• When exhaling, breathe out through your mouth. That’s what we mean when we say, “breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth.”
• Another consideration is when to inhale and exhale during each rep of an exercise. The most common guideline is to inhale during the eccentric, or muscle-lengthening, phase of a movement, and exhale during the concentric, or muscle-shortening, phase of a movement. For most exercises, another way to think about this is to inhale when you’re moving the weight with gravity and exhale when you’re moving the weight against gravity.
Keep these breathing basics in mind, team, during your next strength class or weightlifting workout!
